Cynicism - Charlie's Diary
"I just want a party to vote for whose three guiding principles are (a) maximize individual liberty, (b) minimize the Gini coefficient, and (c) protect the commons. Yes, I am aware that these three goals are orthogonal and often conflict with one another: that's why it requires an ongoing process of negotiation" I can get behind that.

"At Stanford, where I work, most web developers on campus know that if you use a CAPTCHA on your site I will personally walk over to your office and smack you – quite literally (OK, maybe not, but I’m on record for saying that). Sadly, on the web this doesn’t scale."

Steve Jobs’s Real Genius : The New Yorker
“Well, Steve,” Gates responded. “I think there’s more than one way of looking at it. I think it’s more like we both had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it.” I find this genuinely hilarious...and find that I like Gates a little better for it.

CNN.com - Transcripts
per a phone conversation with my sis: "Well, in our last hour, we spoke live with three people who were against the ban on same-sex marriage -- Frances Nicholson and Cynthia Aler (ph), who were married last year in California, and their 18- year-old daughter, Mary-Kate Nicholson (ph)." Mrs. N was my very favorite teacher in HS, and I babysat Mary-Kate when she was a baby, along with her older brother. I had no idea then that she was gay, although I find myself unsurprised.

indeed. it's actually sort of annoying that the GReader Android apps are still pretty nice, because that's where I do about 75% of my reading, and it's hard to decide to switch from that.

Approximately the same recipe I've made a few times. Made with 4 cups of water, not 6, and added a splash of half & half at the end. (And the recipe says to cook the kale for 30 minutes...that should be the POTATOES.)

Rands In Repose: The Rands Test
"A growing groups needs to continually invest in new ways to figure out what it is collectively thinking so anyone anywhere can answer the question: “What the hell is going on?” This is the first question The Rands Test answers.
