Ron Gilbert's Words of Wisdom to Tim Schafer
35-minute video conversation between adventure game legends Ron Gilbert & Tim Schafer on what makes an adventure game, what makes them good, the (percieved?) "death" of adventure games, and the new one that they're going to make (Double Fine Adventure). Wonderful video, particularly if, like me, you grew up playing their games.

Deep Sea
"A Sensory Deprivation Video Game by Robin Arnott"

"Deep Sea is a game about being vulnerable.

"In this audio-only game, players don a mask that obscures their vision and takes over their hearing, plunging them into a world of blackness occupied only by the sound of their own breathing and the rumbles made by unseen terrors.

"Survival means the careful tracking of a liquid constellation of alien sounds, requiring the player to focus intently to the point of suppressing their own breathing, further reinforcing the sensation of claustrophic isolation. The player aims, fires their weapon and hopes to hear the creature cry out in pain, but more often than not the sound they hear is their shot disappearing uselessly into the void.

"The sense of being surrounded by invisible dangers is reinforced by the reality of playing the game in a public space, with the player knowing that all around are people they can neither hear nor see. At the same time spectators can watch the gyrations of the player’s body and hear their voice but have no access to the world the player is experiencing, and so remain helpless to rescue the player from their watery fate."

Requires a hellish gasmask to play, so unfortunately we have to settle for reaction videos for now.

Super Crate Box
Very fun endless run-and-gun arcade-style indie game from Dutch developers Vlambeer http://www.vlambeer.com/. Tight, fun gameplay, solid pixel art, and sweet tunes.

From the site: "Super Crate Box is coming to bring back the glory of the golden arcade age, when all that really mattered was getting on that high score list. Grab your baseball cap and loosen your pants, it's time to fight endless hordes of enemies and collect every weapon crate you can. Prepare for an arcade delight with interesting, refreshing game mechanics, cracking retro art and a terribly hip chiptune soundtrack."

The 0.99 Problem
A short article by Adam "Atomic" Saltsman on why his company Semi Secret Software put Canabalt on Apple's App Store for $2.99 instead of $0.99.

The takeaway: pricing your game at $0.99 means you're trying to shoot the moon. You have to do it to get your game in the top 10, but if you don't make it to the top 10, your $0.99 game won't make nearly enough money.

The Rise and Fall of Final Fantasy
A series of long, deep-dive articles in which the author, Pitchfork, plays through every Final Fantasy game from I to XIII in chronological order. Pitchfork grew up playing Final Fantasy starting with I, so he's intimately familiar with the series and its development, and does a great job of describing how the series' gameplay, storytelling, and business practices evolved over the years. It starts out celebratory and nostalgic, a mood which holds up through the "old school" FF games (I-V) and carries through to what he sees as the apex of the series, the "transitional" period consisting of VI and VII (and to a lesser extent, VIII). Then it starts going downhill. It's called "The Rise and Fall..." for a reason!

Pitchfork avoids falling into the rabid-fan trap and does a great job of keeping a level head throughout, judging each game's strengths and weaknesses quite fairly. One of the most valuable aspects of the series is how he conveys the impact each game had on the American gamer/market when it came out. As the "new school" articles progress, however, he becomes gradually more and more disillusioned with the games, and by the time he gets to XIII...well, it gets pretty depressing :(

The PBBG Project
"A persistent browser-based game, or PBBG, is a computer game that satisfies the following two criteria: 1. It is browser-based. The game is played over the Internet using only a web browser. 2. It is persistent. Progress in the game is achieved over multiple playing sessions.

PBBGs merge the depth and longevity of an application-based game with the accessibility and portability of a browser-based game. PBBG can be spoken as pee-bee for brevity."

La-Mulana
"La-Mulana is a freeware free-roaming platformer game designed to look, sound, and play like a classic MSX game. It´s heavily influenced by the classic Konami MSX game "The Maze of Galious" and anyone who has played that title will probably recognize the similarities very quickly. You play the whip-wielding Indiana Jones-esque archaeologist Lemeza Kosugi as he investigates the ancient ruins of La-Mulana in an attempt to find its treasure and one-up his father, who is trying to get the same treasure as well."

Fallout 3: Hidden or poorly documented commands/features
"Sadly no one ever tells you that you can open the repair screen in Pip-Boy by highlighting an item and pressing R. This is mentioned in the manual booklet but not in the game itself. This is problematic, since no one ever reads the manuals anymore. I mean, this game has like an hour long, un-skipable tutorial section. You’d think that reading the 15 page manual wouldn’t be necessary after that. Sadly it is.

Same goes for holstering your weapon. No one ever tells you that you accomplish it by pressing and holding the reload button. Manual mentions this off-hand when it talks about yielding but if you gloss over that section, you will never know.

Finally, the flashlight which is activated by holding down the Pip-Boy key. It is never mentioned in the manual, never even alluded to in the game and not listed in the key-binding menu. It is a genuine hidden feature. Go figure."

Spacewar: Fanatic Life and Symbolic Death Among the Computer Bums
An article by Stewart Brand from the 7 December 1972 issue of Rolling Stone about the hacking scene and old-school video games. It reads more like notes for an article than a proper article but it is incredibly prescient in places...notably, he extrapolates from the then-2-year-old ARPA Net the downfall/transformation of the newspaper and music industries. Also, this article is apparently the first known use of the term "on-line" in a publication, according to the OED.
