The Challenge of Achieving a Liberal Order — The American Magazine
Arnold Kling reviews Violence and Social Orders, by Douglass North, Barry Weingast, and John Wallis; and The Origins of Political Power, by Francis Fukuyama. To me it sounds as though the authors are elaborating on Franz Oppenheimer.

Bruce Schneier's Latest Book
Arnold Kling reviews Liars and Outliers, by Bruce Schneier. I'm not sure how literally I'm supposed to take Arnold's comments about the "utopian visions" of the left and of libertarians. A few Marxists may believe in their own ability to change human nature, but I can't think of any libertarians who believe that reputations obviate the need for police and courts.

Some Questions About Government, Arnold Kling
Arnold Kling meditates on the flaws of large organizations, and wonders why government-enthusiasts believe their favorite institution is immune to them. At least large corporations are vulnerable to competition from new firms (unless a government prevents that).

Joseph Stiglitz Crosses Nick Rowe
Joseph Stiglitz tries to explain the Great Depression using aggregate demand and a gain in farm productivity. He fails because he doesn't take account, as Bastiat would say, of that which is not seen. Arnold Kling thinks farm productivity is an important part of the explanation, but he jettisons aggregate demand in favor of PSST.

Notes for a Debate
I think Arnold's good and bad spirits are just metaphors for most people's tendency to overrate motives (greed vs. "concern for the public interest"), and underrate constraints and incentives.

The Truth about Entitlements

I agree with most of this, with the notable exception of breaking up the banks.
