Twilio Conference 2011: Steve Klabnik, Everything You Know About REST Is Wrong on Vimeo
november 2011 by earth2marsh
"Pretty much every web service that uses HTTP verbs is calling itself RESTful these days, but what does that even mean? What makes a service RESTful? Why would you write a service using the REST style? Why are most services that call themselves RESTful actually just RPC in REST clothing? Steve will answer all these questions and more, as well as discussing where following strict REST does not make sense."

Sugata Mitra: The child-driven education | Video on TED.com
september 2010 by earth2marsh
"Education scientist Sugata Mitra tackles one of the greatest problems of education -- the best teachers and schools don't exist where they're needed most. In a series of real-life experiments from New Delhi to South Africa to Italy, he gave kids self-supervised access to the web and saw results that could revolutionize how we think about teaching."

september 2010 by earth2marsh
"Last year this short documentary came out on hardware hacking called Repurpose. It’s based on the projects of a Montreal hackerspace called Foulab. It does a good job at describing and explaining circuit bending and general hardware hacking, and why people do it. It also gives a nice look into what many hackerspaces are like — a worldwide phenomenon of grassroots labs like Foulab that provide a means for hobbyists and amateurs (in the best sense of the word) to explore their passions. DMCA Fail: The 5 Dumbest Takedown Notices | PlagiarismToday
july 2010 by earth2marsh
"No one has ever said that the DMCA notice and takedown system is a perfect one, but the majority of takedown notices are valid and are executed correctly. In my experience, careful filers will see about a 95%-98% resolution rate when using the DMCA properly. However, since pretty much everyone is a copyright holder, anyone can use the DMCA and anyone can file a notice under the law. Unfortunately though, that doesn’t mean that everyone uses the law properly or intelligently."

Hayaku: A Time Lapse Journey Through Japan on Vimeo
june 2010 by earth2marsh
"Hayaku: A time lapse journey through Japan. Japan is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. This is my Japan. This is one of the many reasons why I love Japan. I shot this in many locations around Japan in the summer of 2009. Some of the location include Tokyo, Matsuyama, Imabari, Nagano, Gifu, and Ishizushisan. I started this as a personal project to try and capture the beauty that I see in Japan. It started as just that... But now that I have finished, I see it only as a beginning. This video, along with SAIJO MATSURI (www.vimeo.com/7458088) is just the start of a much larger project that I have now decided to do. "

The Collapse of Complex Business Models « Clay Shirky
april 2010 by earth2marsh
One of the best posts of 2010: "The answer he arrived at was that they hadn’t collapsed despite their cultural sophistication, they’d collapsed because of it. Subject to violent compression, Tainter’s story goes like this: a group of people, though a combination of social organization and environmental luck, finds itself with a surplus of resources. Managing this surplus makes society more complex—agriculture rewards mathematical skill, granaries require new forms of construction, and so on. Early on, the marginal value of this complexity is positive—each additional bit of complexity more than pays for itself in improved output—but over time, the law of diminishing returns reduces the marginal value, until it disappears completely. At this point, any additional complexity is pure cost."

Using Photographs to Enhance Videos of a Static Scene
october 2009 by earth2marsh
"a framework for automatically enhancing videos of a static scene using a few photographs of the same scene. For example, our system can transfer photographic qualities such as high resolution, high dynamic range and better lighting from the photographs to the video. Additionally, the user can quickly modify the video by editing only a few still images of the scene. Finally, our system allows a user to remove unwanted objects and camera shake from the video. These capabilities are enabled by two technical contributions presented in this paper. First, we make several improvements to a state-of-the-art multiview stereo algorithm in order to compute view-dependent depths using video, photographs, and structure-from-motion data. Second, we present a novel image-based rendering algorithm that can re-render the input video using the appearance of the photographs while preserving certain temporal dynamics such as specularities and dynamic scene lighting." via @azaaza

Official Google Blog: New AdWords bidding tutorial
september 2009 by earth2marsh
With helpful video, supposedly. "Last month we launched a new feature of AdWords called Bid Simulator. Bid Simulator takes some of the guess work out of cost per click (CPC) bidding by estimating the number of clicks or impressions you could have received if you had used a different maximum CPC bid. Today, I thought I would take the opportunity to help you make the most of this new feature by explaining how to use the data from Bid Simulator to maximize the profit from your marketing investment. In general, when you increase your maximum CPC bid for keywords on search you are able to generate more clicks to your site. This may be because your new bid qualifies you to appear higher up in the Sponsored Links on the search results page, or because your higher bid qualifies your ad to appear in new, more expensive auctions. The goal for you as an advertiser is to decide whether or not these additional clicks come at a cost that is still profitable for you."

Moray McLaren - We Got Time - Chunnel
september 2009 by earth2marsh
"Unbelievable use of optical trickery in this new clip for Moray McLaren's track "We Got Time". Every last bit of animation in this piece was done in-camera, and since that claim is slightly hard to believe, director David Wilson has included a nice making of that spells it all out. "Using both praxinoscopes and the technique of matching up the frame rate of the spinning record to that of the camera, no computer super-imposing was used; what you see is what rolled off the camera. The transitions between each section of animation was created by simply cutting or wiping between the bits of footage." All the animations were created, drawn and coloured by the director David Wilson."

How to Fix Annoying YouTube Jumpiness in Firefox - Firefox - Lifehacker

"increase the time between each of the saves performed by session restore. By opening about:config in your Firefox address bar, then typing browser.sessionstore.interval in the filter box, you'll see a value of 10000, which is in milliseconds. (Meaning your session is saved every 10 seconds.) I changed this to 300000, or every 5 minutes, as I don't have the urgent need for tab restoration. If you feel like being more on the safe side, try increasing it to something a bit lower, say 120000, or every 2 minutes."

Seed: The Evolution of Life in 60 Seconds
march 2009 by earth2marsh
"The Evolution of Life in 60 Seconds is an experiment in scale: By condensing 4.6 billion years of history into a minute, the video is a self-contained timepiece. Like a specialized clock, it gives one a sense of perspective. Everything — from the formation of the Earth, to the Cambrian Explosion, to the evolution of mice and squirrels — is proportionate to everything else, displaying humankind as a blip, almost indiscernible in the layered course of history. Each event in the Evolution of Life fades gradually over the course of the minute, leaving typographic traces that echo all the way to the present day. Just as our blood still bears the salt water of our most ancient evolutionary ancestors."
