Jumpcut: Minimalist Clipboard Buffering for OS X
january 2012 by earth2marsh
Jumpcut is an application that provides "clipboard buffering" — that is, access to text that you've cut or copied, even if you've subsequently cut or copied something else. The goal of Jumpcut's interface is to provide quick, natural, intuitive access to your clipboard's history.

Mac OS X Lion terminal color (remote access) problem fix « Rico's Tech Memo
september 2011 by earth2marsh
"After upgrading to Lion I noticed that the Homebrew theme that I’ve been using since Snow Leopard doesn’t display colors correctly(using different colors for directories, different types of files etc.) any more when working on remote hosts via ssh (local dir colors still work though) and switching to other themes doesn’t help. After messing around with the Terminal settings I finally found the cause and a solution. It seems Lion changed the terminal type to xterm-color256 during the upgrade (don’t remember what the setting was in SL though). The solution is simple enough, just change the emulation type for terminal from xterm-color256 to xterm-color (see screenshot below)."

AudioSlicer - Chop up your MP3 files the easy way
june 2011 by earth2marsh
"AudioSlicer is a Cocoa GUI application for Mac OS X that finds all silences in an audio file and allows you to split it into several smaller audio files and to name/tag them properly. <br />
For now only MP3 is supported but other audio formats may be added in the future. <br />
While most other tools doing this split automatically according to certain criteria, AudioSlicer shows you all silences within a certain range of duration. You can then listen to the silence - well, to the audio before and after the silence really - and then you decide if you want to split there. <br />
The splitting is done without loss, there is no decoding and re-encoding of audio data taking place."

How To Convert Your Putty .ppk Private Key To A Normal SSH Key You Can Use On An Apple Mac
october 2010 by earth2marsh
"Now if you already have a .ppk file from your PC that you want to convert to use on your Mac you need to visit the Putty Website www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html and download puttygen.exe (on your PC) now open it, and using the File menu, load your .ppk that you already use, and type in your pass phrase. Now go to the Conversions menu and export the key as an OpenSSH key – hey presto – you now have a key file that will work on your Mac! Such a simple solution, yet that took me so long to figure out … Anyway, now you just need to copy your new .ssh keyfile over to your home (~) directory on your Mac and set the permissions to 700 (chmod 700 yourkey.ssh)."

Irradiated Software - Cinch
october 2010 by earth2marsh
"Cinch gives you simple, mouse-driven window management by defining the left, right, and top edges of your screen as 'hot zones'. Drag a window until the mouse cursor enters one of these zones then drop the window to have it cinch into place. Cinching to the left or right edges of the screen will resize the window to fill exactly half the screen, allowing you to easily compare two windows side-by-side (splitscreen). Cinching to the top edge of the screen will resize the window to fill the entire screen (fullscreen). Dragging a window away from its cinched position will restore the window to its original size."

CleanHaven Declutters, Formats, and Fixes Any Text You Paste In
september 2010 by earth2marsh
"Windows/Mac/Linux: The email arrived with tab breaks everywhere, excess spacing, strange Word-conversion characters, and you just don't have time for this. CleanHaven is there, on any system, to fix the text any way you need it, whether it's human or computer error. Paste in whatever text you've got, then pick from the drop-down menus and sections up top what you need fixed. CleanHaven knows how to patch up capitalization and spelling errors, sure, but can also sort items in alphabetical or numerical order, strip out excess spaces or tabs, quickly repair broken email or HTML copies, and otherwise do the things you'd grumble about while doing manually. There's also a find-and-replace function that's pretty powerful, and analysis options for seeing the frequency of words and phrases."

The SSD Diaries: Crucial's RealSSD C300 - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News
september 2010 by earth2marsh
"The C300 is clearly a drive made for Windows 7. With no TRIM utility, poor 512-byte aligned performance and clear degradation over time with heavy random writes, the C300 is best used with Windows 7 and its native TRIM support. Luckily for Crucial, there are a lot of Windows 7 users out there. Update: Version 2.6.33 of the Linux kernel supports TRIM as well. Presumably the C300 would do just as well under Linux so long as there's TRIM support. I often get questions from Mac users asking what the best SSD is for OS X. Since Apple still won’t support TRIM you need a very resilient drive under OS X. That path leads you to SandForce. Pick up a Corsair Force, OCZ Vertex 2, G.Skill Phoenix or whatever SF drive tickles your fancy if you want the best of the best in your Mac."

DirSync Pro (Directory Synchronize Pro)
may 2009 by earth2marsh
" small, but powerful utility for file and folder synchronization. DirSync Pro can be used to synchronize the content of one or many folders recursively. Using DirSync Pro you can make incremental backups. In this way you'll spare lots of time because you don't have to copy all the files each time you want to update your backup; only new/modified/larger files would be copied. Use DirSync Pro to easily synchronize files from your desktop PC to your USB-stick (PDA, Notebook, ...). Use this USB-stick (PDA, Notebook, ...) to synchronize files to another desktop PC. Unlike many other synchronization software, DirSync Pro is Open Source; it is 100% free of charge, 100% free of commercial text, 100% free of advertisements and 100% free of spyware. Programmed completely in platform independent Java so it can be run under nearly every modern operating system including Windows, Linux and Macintosh."

Windows 7, Mac OS X and Ubuntu: A Tale of Three Operating Systems | Technovia
april 2009 by earth2marsh
"Anyone who tells you with absolute certainty which operating system is “the best” without knowing your individual needs is probably going to be wrong – and I include myself in this. The right choice for you may be Linux, or it may be Mac, or it may be Windows. Choosing is a complex dance between hardware needs, price, aesthetic preferences, application requirements, technical competence, and even “what my friends use”. I think the best piece of advice that I can give, though, is this: if you are considering switching platform, don’t expect “the other side” to be the land of milk and honey forever. Every computing platform has its pros and cons, and once the honeymoon period is over, you’ll run into them."
