Mobile Sites vs. Apps: The Coming Strategy Shift (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)
from Delicious/network/earth2marsh http://www.delicious.com/network/earth2marsh 1. Current Mobile Strategy: Apps Best 2. Future Mobile Strategy: Sites Best 3. When Will the Strategy Shift Happen? To conclude: I do believe mobile sites will win over mobile apps in the long term. But when that will happen is less certain. Today, if you are serious about creating the best possible mobile user experience, my advice is to develop apps.

How Lanyrd Uses HTML5 for a Great Mobile Web App
""We used HTML5's Application Cache to make the site available offline. Users can look up full information about conferences they're attending even if they have no data connection. As a conference goer, offline access is very important, I can almost hear champagne corks popping in mobile network offices whenever I'm forced to use data abroad.
The offline specification wasn't really designed with data-driven sites in mind, which is why we're one of the first to launch with offline support. We're looking forward to talking about the crazy hacks we had to throw at the specification to make it behave.

All our imagery is double-resolution, so everything looks sharp on high-density devices, the lack of which gives mobile web apps that 'inferior' look. We also share mustache templates between the server & device, and use XHR + the HTML5 history API to update pages. This keeps the user experience snappy as the browser doesn't have to re-parse the JavaScript per page."

Creating mobile Web applications with HTML 5, Part 3: Make mobile Web applications work offline with HTML 5
"Part of the appeal of mobile applications is that you can take your application and its data with you wherever you go. One reality of mobile is, at times, a mobile device does not have a working connection to the Internet. This might seem to be an insurmountable problem for mobile Web applications. However, Web applications have evolved and become capable of working offline. In this article, you will learn how to offline-enable your mobile Web application and learn to detect when your application goes from offline to online and vice versa."

Apps is the new Web: sowing the seeds for Web 3.0 | VisionMobile :: blog
"But what is an app really? It’s not just a bunch of code and a fancy UI. Apps are the new channel for delivering services and experiences in mobile devices, taking over from the old world of web pages, texting, ringtones, wallpapers, MMS, Mobile TV – and some would argue voice, too. What’s interesting all these technologies were agreed over 1,000s of meetings and years of standardisation work taking place across (mostly) network operators in the 80s and 90s. In the case of apps, none of this had to be ‘standardised’, just adopted by a critical mass of software developers and in turn a critical mass of users. Today the billions of downloads are indeed that success metric of de-facto standards like iOS, Android, Blackberry, Symbian and Java – even if the vast majority of downloads take place on a small fraction (5%) of the devices sold."

Grocery iQ: Grocery Shopping Made Simple | GroceryiQ.com
"Of all the features, the barcode scanner and list sharing are probably the most time-saving. The scanner is pretty self explanatory. If you run out of something and want to add it to your shopping list, just fire up the app and scan it (worked like a charm in my tests). If you want to sync shared lists between family members or roommates, you both have to sign up for the service and you both need a device you can run the app on. Meaning if you've got more than one Android or iOS device in your household, you're good to go." via lifehacker

You’re Leaving a Digital Trail. What About Privacy? - NYTimes.com
"Mr. Brown and about 100 other students living in Random Hall at M.I.T. have agreed to swap their privacy for smartphones that generate digital trails to be beamed to a central computer. Beyond individual actions, the devices capture a moving picture of the dorm’s social network. The students’ data is but a bubble in a vast sea of digital information being recorded by an ever thicker web of sensors, from phones to GPS units to the tags in office ID badges, that capture our movements and interactions. Coupled with information already gathered from sources like Web surfing and credit cards, the data is the basis for an emerging field called collective intelligence."

DropDOTio Location Enables Virtual Geocaching - Webmonkey
"File-sharing service Drop.io now allows you to geocode your collection of content (files, notes, links, etc.) which it calls a “drop.” In addition to accessing the content via a shortened URL, users can now use a GPS-enabled phone (Blackberry available, iPhone in private beta) or query by location in a browser. All the privacy settings of a standard drop remain in effect, including an optional guest password. The new feature opens up many possibilities, such as with geocaching, where participants use a GPS to go to coordinates and find a cache, usually a note or small trinket. Now, instead of a happy meal toy, the cache could be virtual–files, notes, or anything normally kept in a drop. Drop.io has a few more ideas for how the service could be used."

Phone chargers - the truth
"My measurements indicate that my phone chargers consume less than 0.5W when left plugged in. The total power consumption of the average Brit is 5000W. (Including car driving, home heating, and so forth, not just electricity.) So obeying the BBC's advice, always unplug the phone charger, could potentially reduce British energy consumption by one hundredth of one percent (if only people would do it). "

Daddy, Where's Your Phone? - O'Reilly Radar
"I plead guilty to Kamla's charge: I think about the web as experienced on a PC, and then about mobile as an add on. The tipping point has come; that notion has to flip: if we're trying to get ahead of the curve, we need to think first about the phone, and then think about the PC browser experience as the add-on. "

How mobile is changing our society
As ordinary physical items enter the same network, it’s not going to be about virtual or physical activities anymore. Both will be different faces of the same coin. It’s not going to be about context or not. Context will be the primary component of everything. The primary device will no longer be a “mobile”, but more like something that interacts with the network in a highly contextual way. Ideas, people and physical objects will be part of the same network in a very literal sense

Worth a thousand words, etc. « Adam Greenfield’s Speedbird
"the essential distinction between context-aware applications and location-based services (LBS): Everyone gets LBS, more or less: it’s the ground on which Interaction Design Cliché No. 2 is built. You’re in a particular place, and there are things your device can do in this place that it’s not capable of elsewhere." "what I, at least, mean when I use the words “context aware”: but for some residual core of basic functionality, the device’s capabilities and available interface modalities at any given moment are largely if not entirely determined by the other networked objects around it. If you pair the device with a text, it’s a reader; at the checkstand, it provides a friendly POS interface; aimed at the skyline, it augments reality. "
