Code: Flickr Developer Blog » Building an HTML5 Photo Editor
Widget Encapsulation
During our initial foray into the online editor space, we took a straightforward approach by having API users launch our editor in a new page or window. This simplified integrations and allowed us to own the editing experience.

When we rebuilt our editor in JavaScript, we took the opportunity to re-architect our API as well. Our first big change was making the editor embeddable. This meant that third party developers could load the editor on their own sites, maintaining user engagement while controlling their experience. We built out customization options that allowed the site owner to decide which tools appeared in the editor. A real estate site, for example, might not want its users adding mustache stickers to appliances in photos.

Sometimes We Suck « Flickr Blog
"We’d like to apologize. The last few weeks have been pretty brutal for the Flickr team. Switching hardware platforms on a live site with hundreds of moving parts that’s serving thousands of requests each second (literally) is hard. Unpleasantly hard.<br />
<br />
Thankfully, only a very small percentage of you will have noticed any problems. Unfortunately, "a very small percentage of you" is now a pretty large number in absolute terms. That means that there were lots of people reporting problems – some small annoyances and some larger ones. And we were, at more than one point, really bad at keeping up with your reports, responding to them, and staying in communication about stuff that wasn’t working, stuff that was being worked on, and all of that.<br />
<br />
And the breakdown wasn’t just in communicating with you. Our internal communication was overwhelmed by the volume and immediacy of work coming in. And that meant that we didn’t always catch things very quickly…"

Minimal Competence: Data Access, Data Ownership, and Sharecropping. - Laughing Meme
"A friend (from Google) recently trolled me, asking, “What’s up with the data lock-in at Flickr?”. Got me thinking about standards. I wrote back a rant to a mailing list of fellow senior hacker, and coders types. Below I’ve included that rant, largely verbatim. I’d been meaning to turn it into a more reasoned blog post, maybe something suitable for posting on a more official outlet, but life is short, and Rod’s post about Quora reminded me to get on it. As software engineers, as social software engineers, it’s important to have standards. You can debate the how much of what we do can be called engineering, even charitably, but the code we write determines the rules that govern the spaces more and more people spend time in, and while “First, do no harm” might be reaching, a few standards that you should be embarrassed to not meet seem appropriate. One of those is around data access, data ownership, and sharecropping. This is something Flickr takes very seriously."

Locals and Tourists - a set on Flickr
"Some people interpreted the Geotaggers' World Atlas maps to be maps of tourism. This set is an attempt to figure out if that is really true. Some cities (for example Las Vegas and Venice) do seem to be photographed almost entirely by tourists. Others seem to have many pictures taken in piaces that tourists don't visit. Blue points on the map are pictures taken by locals (people who have taken pictures in this city dated over a range of a month or more). Red points are pictures taken by tourists (people who seem to be a local of a different city and who took pictures in this city for less than a month). Yellow points are pictures where it can't be determined whether or not the photographer was a tourist (because they haven't taken pictures anywhere for over a month). They are probably tourists but might just not post many pictures at all. The maps are ordered by the number of pictures taken by locals."

noticings : the game of noticing things around you
"What are noticings? Noticings are interesting things that you stumble across when out and about. For example: perplexing pavement markings, a discarded photo, and a ceramic space invader are all noticings. Players are awarded points for things like spotting the first thing in a neighbourhood, or noticing something every day for a week. How to play You play Noticings by uploading your photos to Flickr, tagged with 'noticings' and geotagged with where they were taken. We've got some instructions to help you out. Each turn is a day, and at 3pm GMT every day photos from the previous day are imported from Flickr and the scores calculated."

Adactio: Journal—Shepherding Passionate Users
"Heather Champ speaking about community management at An Event Apart San Francisco." It’s really important to be open and transparent. When things to go wrong, own it. Admit it. Don’t try to whitewash it. Also, if you need to make a change to how people experience your community, don’t wait. Flickr waited eighteen months to finally do the Flickr/Yahoo merge and they really regret it." "When the universe gives you lemons, make lemonade. When there was unannounced downtime on Flickr, they turned it into a colouring contest: print out these circles, colour them in and the winner will get a prize. Over 2000 submissions were uploaded. The level of creativity was startling. Every one participated ended up getting an extra three months on their account."
