MSDN Guidelines for Names
Naming guidelines provide guidance on selecting appropriate identifiers for the elements that make up class libraries including assemblies, namespaces, types, members, and parameters. Choosing identifiers that conform to these guidelines improves the usability of your library and encourages users to trust that your library will not require learning a new set of conventions.

Painless Functional Specifications - Part 2: What's a Spec? - Joel on Software
This series of articles is about functional specifications, not technical specifications. People get these mixed up. I don't know if there's any standard terminology, but here's what I mean when I use these terms.

A functional specification describes how a product will work entirely from the user's perspective. It doesn't care how the thing is implemented. It talks about features. It specifies screens, menus, dialogs, and so on.
A technical specification describes the internal implementation of the program. It talks about data structures, relational database models, choice of programming languages and tools, algorithms, etc.

Stop Trying to Measure IT Value
The problem with trying to answer the IT value question is that it is essentially an unanswerable question. As the CIO turned business writer, Bob Lewis, says in his practical and very readable book, A Manifesto for 21st Century Information Technology, “There are no IT projects and there never were. IT doesn’t deliver value, it enables it.”

According to Lewis, all IT projects – yes, even IT infrastructure projects – are really business projects, in that they are about delivering business value. Specifically, three types of business value: increased revenue, decreased cost, or better-managed risk. That’s it!

Lewis goes on to say, “In the same way that a hardware store provides you with tools to remodel your house but doesn’t do the remodeling, all IT can do is provide the tools business managers and end-users need to deliver value.”

Because there are no IT projects, only business projects, the role of the CIO is focused solely on providing the business with reliable estimates of the IT costs required to get the project done. Although the CIO must collaborate with business partners in establishing a project’s value, it is the business’ responsibility to estimate, and then commit to, the business value of any IT-enabled project.

The Mooney Project » The Framework Myth
I'm beginning to wonder.
...The thing is this: you and your internal development team of architects are not going to build the next great framework. You’re not going to build a good one. You’re not even going to build an acceptable one.

And the other thing is this: If a framework is not great, it is awful, counterproductive, and destructive.

Mongoose is easy to use web server. It can be embedded into existing application to provide a web interface to it.

Mongoose executable does not depend on any external library or configuration. If it is copied to any directory and executed, it starts to serve that directory on port 8080 (so to access files, go to http://localhost:8080). If some additional config is required - for example, different listening port or IP-based access control, then a mongoose.conf file with respective options (see example) can be created in the same directory where executable lives. This makes Mongoose perfect for all sorts of demos, quick tests, file sharing, and Web programming.

CyberLink PowerDirector 8 Ultra Review & Rating | PCMag.com
Few video editors are as capable as PowerDirector. Adobe Premiere Elements 8 offers an easy-to-use interface, and is probably a better buy if you're also doing a lot of photo editing, due to its bundle pricing with the excellent Adobe Photoshop Elements 8. Pinnacle Studio 14 is easier to use than PowerDirector, offering a dead-simple interface that gets you started assembling clips and previewing your movie in seconds. But it's also not nearly as capable, and it doesn't include any of PowerDirector's high-end hardware optimizations. Novice users and those who value ease over power would be better off with either Premiere Elements 8 or Pinnacle Studio 14. But for power users looking for a comprehensive video editor that can meet their need for speed, CyberLink PowerDirector 8 Ultra is the clear winner.

Digital History Hacks (2005-08): History Appliances: Laser Spirograph
A sure sign of a 1970s childhood is a fond memory of doodling with the Kenner Spirograph toy. In the back of my mind I've been thinking it would be fun to build something like it into a history appliance. You can already find software versions online, but I wanted something that could be used at the periphery, rather than the focus, of attention. On a recent trip to Active Surplus in Toronto I realized I could build a version quite cheaply. So here it is: a little too thrown together even to call a hack, this is really a kludge.

Collaborative Analysis of Competing Hypotheses, available soon under GPL
In the 1970s, a CIA veteran named Richards Heuer came to realize that the agency's analysts—the people who try to decode global security puzzles—suffered from a cognitive bias: when their desks overflowed with evidence pointing in many directions, their brains could no longer assess each new piece of information objectively. To compensate, analysts would simply choose a preferred hypothesis, and then assess each new piece of evidence only in the context of that single hypothesis. This created two glaring problems:

Semantic Versioning
As a solution to this problem, I propose a simple set of rules and requirements that dictate how version numbers are assigned and incremented. For this system to work, you first need to declare a public API. This may consist of documentation or be enforced by the code itself. Regardless, it is important that this API be clear and precise. Once you identify your public API, you communicate changes to it with specific increments to your version number. Consider a version format of X.Y.Z (Major.Minor.Patch). Bug fixes not affecting the API increment the patch version, backwards compatible API additions/changes increment the minor version, and backwards incompatible API changes increment the major version.
