How Valve “devalued” video games, and why that’s great news for developers and players
"If you launch a game at $20, and the price goes down to $5, you need to sell four times as many games to make the same money, right? Surprisingly... they don’t just sell four times as many games, they may sell 20 times as many, or more."

An x86 PlayStation 4 could signal a sea-change in the console industry
Ars nerds out on next-gen gaming hardware rumours. "The game consoles can be subsidized and sold at a loss because each game also includes a cut for Sony or Microsoft. As long as gamers buy a handful of games, the money can be recouped. Boxes used predominantly for streaming media don’t provide access to that same revenue stream."

Why Mass Effect is the Most Important Science Fiction Universe of Our Generation
well done, but I find this sort of argument unwinnable; I'd rather try to argue projected historical influence. If a sci-fi universe is important in the woods and no one hears it, is it still important? (<a href="http://penny-arcade.com/report/the-cut">via</a>)

Tom Bissell on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
"A massive interactive system, thoughtfully designed, that allowed for player experiences of nearly infinite variety: Here, finally, was a clear argument for what video games might actually be for." I felt the same way about oblivion. I see the point about Skyrim's dialogue, but I don't see as that big a deal (it's really not a huge amount of play time). We won't get compelling video game conversations until we're actually talking to the game. (<a href="http://funkaoshi.com">via</a>)

"An iPad-only steampunk adventure game published by Bungie and developed by Harebrained Schemes, a games company founded by Jordan Weisman, whose past work game players might be familiar with—BattleTech, Shadowrun, and Crimson Skies." Mario Shunning IPhones Leads to Growing Discontent by Nintendo’s Investors

Chain World Videogame Was Supposed to be a Religion—Not a Holy War
"In Rohrer’s mind, his game would share many qualities with religion—a holy ark, a set of commandments, a sense of secrecy and mortality and mystical anticipation. This was the idea, anyway, before things started to get weird. Before Chain World, like religion itself, mutated out of control."

Exploitationware vs gamification
in which the author rails against the rhetorical dishonesty of the term 'gamification'. That's because points, badges, etc. are external rewards systems (or as Bogost puts it, gestures that provide structure and measure progress), whereas the addictiveness of games comes largely from intrinsic rewards, i.e. enjoyable game mechanics.

Interview With Mike Rosenthal, creator of the "Waiting for Godot" video game
'To quote one of the several cease and desist letters I received from the French lawyers representing the Beckett estate, “Unfortunately we do not share your sense of humor.”  They asked me to change the name “Waiting for Godot,” because they held the rights to it.  Under American law, my game is considered parody and is protected under fair use, but I complied since I’m just a college kid who can’t really afford a lawyer.  So I changed the name to “Samuel Becketttt’s Lawyers Present: Waiting for Grodoudou.”'

Sony Gets Desperate: Releases Second App Store Smear Ad
There's a germ of truth in these ads: a lot of iPhone games are so casual as to be fluff, and I personally find the virtual joysticks found in a lot of the more advanced games to be borderline unusable. That said, the PSP's sales are clearly being decimated by the iPhone and iPod Touch - as if they weren't having enough trouble competing with the DS.

Video games can never be art
Ebert trolls the video game crowd again, responding to a TED talk from a designer. She cites Waco Resurrection, Braid and Fl0wer as examples of games as art, which Ebert dismisses as "pathetic" - without playing them, of course. Which is like being a film critic who doesn't actually watch films.

A Glimpse at BioWare's Philosophy on RPGs
"the average 300 page novel clocks in at approximately 75,000 words. By comparison, the original Mass Effect contains approximately 300,000 words, Mass Effect 2 adds to that total with 450,000 words, and Dragon Age dwarfs them both with some 1,000,000 words."
