Flaherty Should Cool Toronto’s Condo Market (Not Just Warn Us About It)
Realosophy argues for taxes that reduce speculation in the condo market. I agree - the measures that Flaherty has taken to reign in the housing market all make it harder for actual people to buy the land they want to live in.

Where Should We Put the “Downtown Relief” Line?
Steve Munro on the possible DRL routes. He doesn't spend a lot of time discussing where it would connect with the Yonge-University line, which I'm curious about, as Metrolinx doesn't seem to want it to go to Union for capacity reasons

"The Rise of the Creative Class" by Richard Florida
the essay version, that preceded the book. I was happy to find this because I have been meaning to read the book, but feared I would hate it. This seems pretty harmless, a distillation and refocusing of earlier concepts (information work, new middle class) into an argument that perhaps needed to be made.

TTC slashes service on 62 routes
apparently the TTC counts as "gravy". Just so stupid - it's obvious to anyone who uses it that we need more service, not less. This will only lead to more cars on the road.

Winnipeg rethinks suburban sprawl with downtown reinvention
"Around the world there is a growing understanding that suburban sprawl is unsustainable, and that, for cities to survive, they must shrink back in on themselves, tightening up, promoting density and pushing their growing population into space already served by existing infrastructure and social services."

How to Make an American Job Before It's Too Late
looks at the decline of US manufacturing from the point of view of Silicon Valley. Obviously related to the shrinking cities kick I've been on lately: the cities shrinking are the industrial centers, and the jobs have moved to Asia. There is something cruel about the idea of a North American economy with no manufacturing ("we used to make shit in this town" - The Wire). via <a href="http://funkaoshi.com>Funkaoshi</a>
