Kyle Schlesinger on Walter Benjamin's archive
"it is easy to see his loving gathering of Russian peasant figurines as a countermeasure to the Nazis ruthless roundup of human beings. One collection preserves and keeps alive and one exterminates. The collecting impulse is both merciful and murderous…"

Baby Books Collection (UCLA)
"UCLA’s Biomedical Library… recently started building a collection of 19th to 21st century baby record books. These are memory books in which parents record a child’s activities and developmental milestones, and which provide a place to gather photographs, locks of hair, first teeth, and other mementos. Many books track individualized medical information—from height and weight to various childhood diseases; some also provide infant health care advice. The collection of nearly 500 titles and editions, with more than 900 different copies, now spans 125 years." (from an announcement of upcoming talk on the collection by Special Collections Cataloger Russell Johnson, at UW-Madison).
