Myself, quantified | Extenuating Circumstances
26 days ago by DirkSonguer
Challenge accepted.
So a few things happened.
On 6 December 2011, I got a Lifescan OneTouch Ultramini blood glucose meter and I started taking my blood sugar first thing in the morning and before and after every meal.
On 8 December, having seen that there was no Mac software provided by Lifescan for the glucose meter and registered to read their hardware documentation and given up, I found Glooko, downloaded their app and ordered a meter sync cable from Amazon.
On 11 January 2012 I got back from my Christmas holiday and set up the Withings scale I got for Christmas, measuring my weight each day.
On 22 February, I got my Nike+ Fuelband and started tracking my daily activity level.
And on 24 February, I started a couch to 5k running program, tracking everything with Nike+ Running GPS.
And every so often, I log what I’m eating in The Eatery, from Massive Health.
I have a quantifiable shit-tonne of data right now.

Tobold's MMORPG Blog: Incomplete information as a game mechanic
november 2011 by DirkSonguer
At the Games Developer's Conference GDC 2011, Raph gave a very good (if long) talk. And I especially liked the part where he talked about incomplete information as a game mechanic (the "Strategy guides" bookmark at the link above). He makes fun about the people who say that reading a strategy guide, for example for a World of Warcraft raid, "isn't really cheating. Because it doesn't really tell me how to play the game. I still have to tap the button in my synchronized swimming exercise at the right time." He then points out that incomplete information is an important game mechanic of many games, like Poker or Stratego. Or even Scrabble, where he cites the LA Times about an online Scrabble Cheat-o-Matic site which gets 120,000 page views a day since you can play Scrabble on Facebook.

Anecdote: An approach to mentoring
october 2010 by DirkSonguer
Sometimes you just need a few things to get started. I think this is the case for mentoring. We have been helping a company develop a mentoring culture and in typical Anecdote style we collected 50 stories of good and bad mentoring in the organisation and then help potential mentors draw lessons from these stories themselves. They learn that listening is more important that giving advice, that questions are more important than answers and the ability to tell a story is important to share experiences.

Wattenberg and Viégas: Visualizing Social Conversations | Brain Pickings
june 2010 by DirkSonguer
Data visualization is an obsession around here and viz-wiz duo Wattenberg and Viégas are among our absolute favorites. At the recent Personal Democracy Forum, they gave an excellent talk about some of their recent projects and how data visualization can be used to better comprehend behavioral patterns acorss the social web.
Among the highlights: Web Seer visualizes how different groups — men vs. women, Democrats vs. Republicans — complete the same Google Suggest search queries. (Remember Question Suggestions?)

iA » WIRED on iPad: Just like a Paper Tiger…
june 2010 by DirkSonguer
First, the paper magazine was crammed into the little iPad frame. In form of a PNG slide show. To compensate for the lack of interactive logic, this pretty package was provided with a fruity navigation. In the end it was spiced with in-app links, plucked with a couple of movies and salted with audio files (”interactive”). Then it was off to marketing. And it sold 24,000 copies. Dammit. It’s the Nineties all over again.
