Facebook Social Readers Are All Collapsing
18 days ago by DirkSonguer
The Washington Post was the first publication to experiment with a "frictionless" social reader app, which launched last year. If you use Facebook you've probably come across it: it manifests as a clustered list of stories that are almost completely unrelated except for the fact that they all come from the same publication.
If you decide to click on a link it doesn't take you to the story. Instead, it shunts you over to a signup screen for Social Reader, which you have to accept if you want to make it through to the site. This forceful behavior is how the Post's reader app gained tens of millions of users in a few short months; it's also how, as Jeff Bercovici at Forbes pointed out this morning, the Washington Post seems to have worn its readers — or Facebook — out. They're annoyed, and they're quitting in droves

The Toll of Hardware and Software Fragmentation on Android Devs
8 weeks ago by DirkSonguer
Android fragmentation is a huge problem. The fact that there are hundreds of different hardware devices running over half a dozen different versions of Google’s OS makes it annoying for users, but makes it an especially devastating issue for developers trying to make a business out of the Android ecosystem.

Welcome | N9 Apps
october 2011 by DirkSonguer
Let's talk about what we have here. Firstly, we let developers to submit new apps, which the community can then promote, favorite and review. The apps are listed on three views: hot, top and fresh.
Recently most promoted apps will rise on top of the hot list, where other people will discover them easily. When promotions start to decline, the app will sink from the hot list and another app will take the highest place. The top list will maintain the all-time most promoted apps, which is great for users new to the device, or if you have missed something. The fresh view will show all brand new and recently updated apps. Each app can be promoted again after an update, which allows the apps to rise again on the hot and top lists.

Measuring Measures - Measuring Measures - Why the iPad is Destroying the Future of Journalism
january 2011 by DirkSonguer
I read a great article in the Economist the other day on my iPad. I tried to share it with my social network on Facebook and Twitter, but I can't do that with old media.
When the iPad came out, I was ready to give big media another chance. I thought they might wake up and start exploring new products and business models. I thought they might explore how to integrate with the modern Internet, the distributed and syndicated content model, and the social ecosystem. Then the apps came out. It was all the same - a proliferation of branded channels.

Developer sales data reveals logarithmic Marketplace, 70,000 downloads
december 2010 by DirkSonguer
Sigurd has 4 applications in Marketplace, with various levels of success, and it is his most recent app which has seen the most attention, garnering more than 50,000 downloads in 23 days, and reaching a Marketplace rank of 8, with an average of 2274 downloads per day.
The other apps have not fared as well, but what is interesting is the rapid drop-off when going from position 8 with 2300 downloads per day, to position 49 with only 330 downloads per day.
