Digital Literacy: Search Algorithms are Mechanical Turks | DMLcentral

In most cases, algorithms aren't autonomous machines, however. From the perspective of digital literacy, it is better to think about an algorithm like Google's as a kind of Mechanical Turk. The "Turk" was a chess-playing machine that made it seem that it operated autonomously, a robot capable of challenging human players in a game of skill. However, the machine was not autonomous, but was operated by a person concealed in a compartment of the machine. Similarly, even though algorithms give the appearance of autonomous behavior, maintaining that semblance of autonomous action requires frequent tinkering and is dependent on guidance from human controllers. In this sense, algorithms are mechanical, in that they have features that enhance the speed or accuracy of these human decisions, but they are not independent of those decisions.

Deconstructing the Actor Model

The Actor Model of Computation, as defined by Carl Hewitt [1] and elaborated by Gul Agha [2], defines three primitive operations. These operations are “Send”, “Create” and “Become”. The “Send” operation transmits an asynchronous message to a known receiver. The “Create” operation constructs a new actor with a specified initial behavior. The “Become” operation defines the behavior used to process the next message received by the current actor. We will examine each of these primitives, focusing on their relationship with various computational concepts. The actor model provides a compact mode of expression. By unpacking this model, we hope to better understand how to take advantage of its power and elegance.

"One simple but surprisingly interesting experiment was the temperature control simulation. Subjects were put in the position of a supermarket manager and told that the thermostat for the freezers has broken down. They had to manually control the refrigeration system to maintain a temperature of 4 degrees C--higher and lower temperatures are both undesirable. They had available to them a regulator and a thermometer; the specific control mechanism was not described to the subjects. The results were often just bizarre. Many participants failed to understand that delays were occurring in the system (a setting does not take effect immediately, just as an air conditioner cannot cool a house immediately) and that these delays needed to be considered when trying to control the system. Instead, they developed beliefs about regulator settings that could best be described as superstitious or magical: "twenty-eight is a good number" or, even more strangely, "odd numbers are good."

This is a monument to violence, and its effect is terrifying. First, the falling water drops 30 feet from the rim to the surface of the pool. What I had assumed would be a decorous burble turned out to be a raging torrent. I had worried that the noises of the city would drown out any peace and quiet the memorial might have generated, but there is no peace and quiet.

Converting images into time series for data mining

The first step in data mining images is to create a distance measure for two images. In the intro to data mining images, we called this distance measure the “black box.” This post will cover how to create distance measures based on time series analysis. This technique is great for comparing objects with a constant, rigid shape. For example, it will work well on classifying images of skulls, but not on images of people. Skulls always have the same shape, whereas a person might be walking, standing, sitting, or curled into a ball. By the end of this post, you should understand how to compare these hominid skulls from UC Riverside1 using radial scanning and dynamic time warping.
