BUSINESSES on Winwick Quay industrial estate were evacuated after a chemical spill at Cameron Court on Tuesday at 1.55pm.

Twenty litres of nitric acid spilled into a contained drainage system and reacted with steel.

All fluid was contained on site and there were no casualties or injuries reported.

A Cheshire Fire spokesman said: “The premises were ventilated and the quality of air was sampled by an on-site chemist.

“Adjoining properties were evacuated as a precaution.

“The buildings were declared clear and staff were allowed to re-enter the buildings.”

LYNDHURST -- The Valero gas station on Mayfield Road has reopened Sunday afternoon, after a gas spill closed the station Sunday morning.

The fire department and Hazmat responded to the scene where the gas tank came of a truck, spilling nearly 30 gallons of gas from the tank.

The gas has been cleaned up and the area has been deemed safe.

A tanker accident and resulting leak in The Bronx has clean-up crews busy this morning and leaves one Eastchester neighborhood roped off to traffic.
The accident happened just before 3 a.m. on the off ramp of exit 14 southbound on the New England Thruway. That's the exit that takes drivers to the Hutchinson River Parkway.
Fire department officials say the tanker was carrying carbon dioxide which escaped and created a cloud of gas in the immediate area. The exit ramp is closed at this hour. No injuries have been reported.

SAN DIEGO -- A janitor suffered a minor chemical burn Thursday when contents of a can of pepper spray he fished out of a trash can at a Hillcrest mall spewed onto him.
The 45-year-old maintenance man reported being doused on the hand by the caustic liquid at the Hillcrest Cinemas complex in the 3900 block of Fifth Avenue just before noon, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Medics washed the patch of the man's skin contacted by the chemical, then took him to a hospital for a precautionary evaluation, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

Hundreds of people were affected by the incident at the 3M factory, on Standard Way Industrial Estate, in Northallerton, North Yorkshire.

It is understood the leak involved 600 litres of waterbased resin, which triggered an automatic fire alarm, resulting in a 400m exclusion zone being put in place.

A security guard was the only person inside the factory at the time. No one was injured.

...Emergency services said there was no danger to the public, although nearby residents were advised to stay indoors and keep windows closed.

Neighbouring businesses were also affected, with staff unable to get into their premises.

Inspector John Wilkinson, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “The chemical released was a mild irritant and there was no risk of harm.

“Thanks to the co-operation, understanding and patience of local people and businesses, we were able to bring the incident to a safe and swift conclusion.”

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and is expected to investigate, while 3M will carry out its own investigation.

ONE person was taken to hospital after a chemical spillage at a Bewdley company.

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (H&WFRS) was called at about 12.30pm this afternoon to reports of a chemical spill at a company in Long Bank.

Fire engines from Kidderminster and Tenbury Wells attended, along with the Environmental Protection Unit from Stourport and the Incident Support Unit from Droitwich.

They found that two small five litre containers of the chemical methylene chloride had been spilled at the premises and that the company had safely dealt with the incident themselves.

Station Commander Dave Williams, from H&WFRS, said: “The company had excellent procedures in place to deal with a chemical spill of this nature, and they managed to contain the spillage and ventilate the factory effectively.”

CHARLESTON, S. C. (WCIV) -- The Hollings Science Center on the campus of the College of Charleston has been re-opened after being evacuated due to a reported chemical leak.

According to Mike Robertson, College of Charleston spokesman, a chemistry class was working on an experiment, mixing chemicals and heat when a toxic cloud formed.

Hazmat crews were called to the scene on Coming Street.  According to Robertson, once the chemicals used in the experiment cooled, they were to be removed from the building. 

Robertson says today's incident is something the staff is trained and prepared for.

"It's something we expect."

Additionally, he says, the staff members took the proper precaution to ensure everyone's safety.

"They contacted the officials like they're supposed to and we closed down the area and evacuated everyone in a pretty quick period of time."

No injuries were reported.

Friday's evacuation marks the second time the building has been evacuated due to a chemical or gas leak in less than a month.

On January 11, gas lines in the area of The Hollings Science Center were damaged and the building was evacuated.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - HAZMAT teams were called in early Thursday morning after a falling piece of ice cut the fuel line in a FedEx truck.

Indiana State Police report the driver was going under a bridge at entrance ramp to Interstate 74 from Interstate 465 Northbound when the ice fell and struck the fuel line.

The HAZMAT crews arrived and blocked two lanes while they mopped up the leaking fuel. In all, 125 gallons of fuel spilled, but no one was injured.

 Traffic at Highway 86 and Austin Road was tied up until almost 6:00 am. There were no injuries reported, but the CHP says the semi spilled its fuel when it rolled. The Hazmat team was called to clean up the diesel fuel spill. Brawley fire was called to monitor the situation. The Highway Patrol says it took almost two hours to get a tow truck to the scene big enough to handle a semi and it’s trailers. Traffic was reduced to one lane at the Twin Bridges until 5:55 Thursday morning.

SAN DIEGO — A maintenance worker in a Hillcrest movie theater complex suffered a minor chemical burn and two people were nearly overcome by fumes from a can rigged to spew pepper spray Thursday, fire officials said.

The 8-ounce can’s trigger was “deliberately configured” to keep spraying the irritating chemical, said Maurice Luque, San Diego Fire Rescue Department spokesman.

“It’s basically an assault situation,” Luque said. “Potentially, it could be a felony. Pepper spray can cause burns and respiratory problems.”

Firefighters tackling a chemical leak at an industrial estate in Northallerton have warned residents to stay indoors.

Fumes containing a mild irritant leaked from the premises on the Standard Way Industrial Estate following a chemical reaction at 0615 GMT, police said.

A 400m cordon is in place and the nearby A167 has been closed.

Fire officers said there was no risk of harm to the public but nearby residents should take precautions.

They are being told to remain indoors with closed windows.

Police said they were patrolling the area to ensure no motorists or pedestrians stopped there.

A Ligonier man has been charged after attempting suicide in a public place using hydrogen sulfide.

Somerset Borough police said Glen A. Gill, 41, Gravel Hill Road, parked his truck in the Somerset County Assistance Office parking lot along Stayrook Street Jan. 15.

Police were sent to that location for a suicide attempt at 8:24 a.m. When police arrived, they were advised that Gill had hung a hand-written note on his truck stating “Do Not Enter — Call Hazmat — Hydrogen Sulfide Inside.” Known as detergent suicide, hydrogen sulfide is created when certain household cleaners are mixed together.

LAGUNA, N.M. -- The eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 are back open after a dual-vessel gas tanker truck rolled early Wednesday morning.
The truck and its tanks were blocking I-40 lanes and had to be unloaded before being removed.
More than 100 gallons of fuel spilled, so hazmat teams were called to help with the clean up.

NORTH UNION TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A portion of Route 119 in North Union Township was closed Tuesday night while Hazmat and PennDot crews cleaned a feuel leak.
According to state police, a truck lost a portion of its load while traveling northbound on Route 119, shortly before 6:30 p.m.
A tractor trailer struck part of the load which damaged it fuel tank and caused nearly 100 gallons of fuel to leak onto the highway.

A family was overcome by chemical fumes and had to be rescued by firefighters after two cleaning products were mixed together at an Oxfordshire home.

Crews were called to a house in Clare, near Watlington, on Tuesday afternoon.

The house was cordoned off and two adults and a child were taken to hospital.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said two cleaning products, including a drain unblocker, had been mixed together creating chlorine gas.

'Very toxic'
Crews wore specialist equipment and breathing apparatus to clear up the chemicals.

Incident Commander and station manager Gary D'Anger said: "The occupants had been using a chemical drain blocker and mixed this with a cleaning product to cleanse a waste pipe.

"These two chemicals produced a very toxic chlorine gas which caused the occupiers breathing difficulties.

"Very toxic chemicals and gases can be produced by mixing different cleaning products together which can cause very serious and sometime permanent injuries.

"Always follow the instructions on the bottle and never mix cleaning products".

All lanes of Highway 23 are open after cleanup of a chemical spill was completed Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At about 7 a.m., the Moorpark CHP office received a report of a one-gallon container whose contents, which was later identified as hydrochloric acid and silica, had spilled in the southbound traffic lanes, causing a chemical cloud.

In a press release, the CHP said it closed both sides of the highway while the Ventura County Fire Department identified and neutralized the chemicals. Southbound traffic was diverted off at Avenida de Los Arboles and Janss Road. The north and southbound Freeway 101 transitions to Highway 23 were also closed.

SIOUX FALLS, SD - A pickup collided with an 18-wheeler pulling two trailers, sending the the truck out of control and causing a chemical spill. Eight hours later the crash,  between 12th and 26th street, was still being cleaned up.

The semi was hauling two tanks of liquid fertilizer. The second tank was turned on its side and emergency officials say more than a thousand gallons of the fertilizer spilled into the median.

It's all because of a slick spot on roads that seemed clear.

"There was a crash between the two vehicles. The semi-truck and trailers ended up in the median," South Dakota Highway Patrol Captain Kevin Joffer said. 

There were no injuries or damage from a 30-gallon propane tank leak in West York, said Neil Gunnet, the borough's fire department chief.
Firefighters were called shortly after 3:30 p.m. to the 1600 block of King Street, where propane gas was leaking from one of the tanks on a Continental catering truck. The tank's valve was damaged and there was no way to stop the vapor from leaking, Gunnet said.
"It just vented out and we stood by to make sure there was no damage to anything or no sparks," he said. "We blocked off the area. We checked (nearby) homes and buildings to make sure everything was OK. There were no problems."

A report of a hazardous materials leak sent the Kennewick Fire Department to Kennewick’s Oak Street Industrial Park at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The leak of sulfur dioxide, a heavier than air gas used in processing wine corks, happened at CorkTec, 1426 E. 3rd Ave.

“The gas is a bio corrosive meaning it’s hazardous to people,” said Battalion Chief Mike Barnett.

Sulfer dioxide is commonly used to clean equipment used in wine making. CorkTec uses the gas when sealing bags of wine corks.

“The vessel had a loose top which allowed the gas to leak,” Barnett said, adding that “the two workers evacuated the building and called 911.”

PENNSVILLE TWP. — Police and hazardous materials emergency units responded to Siegfried USA on Industrial Park Road here Tuesday after  a vent line containing bleach vapors broke.

The incident took place at 11:55 a.m. during the process of making a drug substance manufactured safely for many years at the site, according to Rita van Eck, director of Human Resources at Siegfried.

The leak was immediately contained and member of Siegfried’s site emergency response team responded to the building where the incident took place, according to van Eck.

All lanes of Highway 23 in Thousand Oaks were reopened by 10:10 a.m. Tuesday after pool-cleaning acid spilled from a truck, creating a chemical cloud that stopped traffic in both directions, authorities said.

A one-gallon container of muriatic acid fell out of a southbound truck just before 7 a.m. on the southbound lanes between Janss Road and Hillcrest Avenue, authorities said.

The northbound lanes were reopened shortly after 8 a.m., said Miguel Duarte, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol in Moorpark.

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- Hazmat crews spent several hours chasing down and cleaning up a hydraulic spill in Longview on Saturday. Fire department officials say a truck was leaking the fluid as it made its way from Loop 281 and Estes Parkway to Lamond Road and Cotton Street. Spills were found at four spots along the way, with two being cleaned up by TXDOT contractors, and the other two cleaned up by hazmat and fire crews. The spill was not a major incident and posed no danger to the public.

AMESBURY - Rescue officials closed down South Martin Road Friday night for more than an hour as they cleaned up a small propane leak at the Eastern Propane distribution facility off South Hunt Road.

Fire Chief Jonathan Brickett said only a small amount of the highly flammable liquid escaped from the end of a distribution pipe but it was enough to attract the attention of neighbors, one of whom called authorities.

Propane, like natural gas, is odorless. As a safety measure, an additive is introduced to give it the familiar smell of rotten eggs so it can be detected if spilled or leaking.

The distribution facility, located hundreds of feet away from South Hunt Road, is where Eastern Propane truck drivers come to fill their tanks before delivering propane to customers.

Hazmat and fire crews were called to Main Steel on Hendricks Road, that's the old Wean United building, on Saturday morning.  Officials say the company was dumping aluminum oxide into a hopper and when it mixed with the fresh snow, it created a cloud of gas. 

Everyone within a two-mile radius of the scene was evacuated for several hours.  However, the area is all industrial, so no homes were affected.

Crews shoveled dirt into the hopper to prevent any further leaks.

PHOENIX - Hazmat crews are called out to a Phoenix business after a leak is detected on Saturday.

Both Phoenix and Tempe firefighters arrived at the building near 54th Street and Washington after an alarm was set off. It detected an ammonia leak at the Crescent Crown Distributing Company.

The company distributes bottled beer, and the ammonia is used as a cooling agent for the large coolers they are stored in.

GALVESTON — Last week, Mary Frank arrived early as she does every Sunday to open the Christian Fellowship Ministry Church in Dickinson. When she got there, she found someone had knocked off the front-door lock.
Frank, 60, the church secretary, stepped inside to find a chemical had been poured on the carpet from the front door to the pulpit, eating all the way through and into the concrete.
The chemical was poured over the 20 pews, cutting through wood and upholstery, and in the kitchen. The church's three guitars, two keyboards and amplifier were gone.
"I can't put it into words how I felt that day; it was so emotional," Frank said.
Dickinson police Detective Frank Price estimated the damage caused last Sunday at about $25,000.
The chemical still covers the church floor, said Assistant Pastor Eddie Glenn, who suspects it is some sort of acid.

Firefighters were investigating a leaking propane tank at a gas supplier in Stoughton tonight, authorities said.

Stoughton Fire Lieutenant Jim Curtin said in a phone interview that a snow plow is believed to have struck the 1,000-gallon tank at the Airgas East facility on Maple Street at some time today. Curtin could not say how serious the leak was. He said no injuries have been reported.

CANON CITY - A driver is dead and a HazMat crew is working to clean up a spill after a semi-truck and tanker rolled and caught fire on Friday.


The Colorado State Patrol says crews were on scene around 11 a.m. after the tanker went off the right side of eastbound Colorado Highway 50, near mile post 228 and rolled.

Troopers say the rig, which was hauling fuel, caught fire, spilling chemicals and fuel.

The fuel spilled away from the nearby river, but Arkansas Head Waters and a Colorado State Patrol HazMat team were on scene.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers say.

WESTWOOD - A hazardous materials team was sent Thursday to UCLA, where a spill of a cleaning agent inside a building left three people feeling ill.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded at 2:31 p.m. to a report of an "unknown chemical spill" in the Biomedical Sciences Research Building, city fire spokesman Devin Gales said.
Three facilities workers who reported feeling nauseous were treated at the scene, according to UCLA officials, and about 200 people were safely evacuated from the building.
South Charles E. Young Drive was closed between Tiverton Drive and Westholme Avenue.
The spilled cleaning agent, identified as chlorine dioxide, was contained by 3:30 p.m., officials said.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A hazmat team is on the scene of a 300 gallon fuel spill at a terminal on Halifax Lane in Chesapeake.

According to Captain Mike Thibeault, a foam team has the spill contained and covered.

Crews are conducting atmospheric monitoring in the area right now, Thibeault said.

No injuries or evacuation have been reported.

A roadside service station has been closed on the M1 near Sheffield following a chemical leak.

The fire service said a parked lorry carrying 4,000 litres of nitric acid had leaked some of its load at Woodall Services.

The car park was evacuated at about 0930 GMT. A 50m (164ft) cordon has been put in place around the lorry.

The police and fire service are involved in the incident. It is not known how much acid has leaked.

Adrian, MI (WTVG) -- A potentially deadly chemical leak caused quite a commotion today in Adrian.

Two people were rushed to the hospital, a neighborhood was ordered to stay inside with the windows closed, and schools were delayed.

It happened at Bio-Lab, a chemical making plant in Adrian, Michigan

Bromine, used to make swimming pool chemicals, polluted the air. Adrian fire chief Paul Trinka said the chemical can be deadly "at a high enough concerntration." Fortunately, levels weren't high enough to cause death.

Bio-Lab manager John Poelstra says the bromine released was "a very small amount, but bromine has very high warning properties. So despite being such a small amount of material, it is detectable."

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- There were some tense moments this morning at an industrial site on the outskirts of Manly, Iowa.

"We had a call, 9-1-1 call earlier today that there was a train car that had sulfuric acid spilling out of it," explained Worth County Sheriff Jay Langenbau as he stook outside his SUV, just down the road from the Manly Terminal.

Sulfuric acid is a colorless, odorless and highly corrosive liquid. About two thirds of all fertilizers available on the market today are created from a combination of sulfuric acid and other chemicals. It's also a key component in batteries and wastewater treatment.

"I don't know how much is spilling," said Sheriff Jay Langenbau. "We do have hazmat that is up there taking a look at it and taking care of the problem up there. So what we're doing is we're blocking the roads here and making a perimeter."

POLICE are warning motorists to avoid the Huntingdon area after a tanker collided with a lorry and spilled its load of hazardous chemicals onto the A14 at the Spittals Interchange.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- What started as a planned day of wahoo fishing became a hazardous materials incident when a boater pumped 71 gallons of gas into the rod holder rather than the gas tank.
St. Johns County Fire and Rescue was called to the RaceTrac gas station on State Road 16 at Interstate 95 before dawn Thursday.
Rather than the gas filling the tank, it filled the hull of the boat. The gas station was closed for more than two hours while the hazmat team disabled all electronics on the boat to minimize the risk of an explosion and drained the gas 5 gallons at a time.
No one was injured, but the boat will require some maintenance before it can be used again.
The boater, a man with 40 years experience, has a new fishing story, just not one he will be proud to tell.

St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A potential Hazmat situation ended Thursday night without any serious risk.

Hazmat and several fire engines were called out to Elantas Pdg Inc., a chemical company located in the 5200 block of North Second Street.

Fire officials tell NewsChannel 5 that some type of chemical process may have caused smoke in the building.

Hazmat crews were able to do a building check. No hazardous chemicals were detected.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Salt Lake City hazmat crews were called to a "sodium hydrosulfide" spill on California Avenue right by I-215 Thursday.

Firefighters say the sutstance was in a container on a truck, and about five gallons leaked out as the driver exited the freeway.

The truck came from Tooele County.  Utah Highway Patrol troopers retraced its path to make sure none of the substance spilled out along the way.

California Avenue and the northbund off-ramp onto California Avenue was shut down during clean-up.  "Sodium hydrosulfide" smells like rotten eggs and it can irritate the eyse and skin if a person comes in contact with it.  In this case, firefighters say no one was ever in danger.

The Nutley HazMat team responded Thursday to a contaminant spill on the Third River, authorities reported.

The unit continued to address the problem at 4 p.m. Thursday in the area of Harrison Street and Ravine Avenue.

"We're currently trying to find the source of the spill," Deputy Fire Chief Paul Cafone said at 5 p.m.

Members of the Solano County Interagency Hazmat Team removed samples from eight barrels discovered in the alley to the rear of 765 Sereno Drive Wednesday afternoon.
The barrels were reported at 1:14 p.m., prompting response by 23 hazmat team members, where they found illegally dumped 55-gallon drums containing hazardous materials, according to Vallejo Fire Department spokesman Bill Tweedy.

The property owner will pay for the drums' removal.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A fire department hazardous materials team has given the all-clear after a pre-dawn acid spill at a Las Vegas casino ice skating rink.

No injuries and no damage were reported, and hotel guests and casino patrons were not affected by the report of a hydrochloric acid leak early Tuesday at the Orleans Arena.

A scheduled Tuesday night Las Vegas Wranglers minor league hockey game won't be affected.

A fire official tells KLAS-TV that arena employees noticed an acid smell when they arrived for work before 5 a.m. and summoned firefighters.

Officials say the corrosive acid is used in the production of ice at the arena.

FREDERICK CO., Md. (WUSA) --A tractor trailer carrying various liquids overturned shortly after 6 a.m. on I-70 near Route 27.

At one time, all lanes of I-70 were closed. Westbound reopened around 7:50 a.m. Eastbound is still closed, and traffic is diverted to Rt. 144.

The truck was carrying wood sealant, embalming fluid, and refrigerant, which spilled on the highway.

The driver was transported to a local hospital. There's no word on his condition.

MILLCREEK, Salt Lake County, Utah — Shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday, Hazmat crews responded to a liquid nitrogen leak at the Tandem Labs building at 1121 East 3900 South in Millcreek.

A 6000-gallon tank of the substance sprung a leak, causing fire authorities to close down parts of 1100 East, although authorities say it isn't a safety issue.

"We're just gonna keep people out of the area until we get this remedied," said Capt. Cliff Burningham with the Unified Fire Authority.

The nitrogen lowers oxygen levels in the laboratory, so crews are taking all necessary precautions.

"You'll notice that the firefighters are in their full turnout gear and also their self contained breathing apparattuses," said Capt. Burningham. "That protects their respiratory drive so they can be in that environment where there's low oxygen concentrations."

The leak was first notified by Unified Fire Authority officers who were out in the area today.

"They arrived, the first arriving unit, and found the steam and vapor coming from the storage doors of a laboratory," said Capt. Burningham.

Officials don't know what caused the leak and plan to let the liquid nitrogen supplier handle the situation, saying they are best-equiped.

EL PASO, Texas -- El Paso Fire Department hazmat crew was on the scene of a chemical spill in far East El Paso Saturday.
According to El Paso County Sheriff's Officials, a corrosive liquid was found leaking from a semi-truck.
Sheriff's deputies closed off the area near 1316 N. Horizon as a precaution.
Deputies say some people came in contact with the substance and had to be decontaminated.
According to sheriff’s spokesman, the chemical is believed to be trimethylolpropane poloxypropylene triamine.

HORIZON - The hazmat team is working to clean up a chemical spill in Horizon city.
El Paso County Sheriff's Deputies say a corrosive liquid leaked out of a tractor trailer. There's no word on serious injuries, but we have learned some people are being decontaminated.

Initial reports suggests this chemical could be toxic. Deputies are asking for people to avoid the area, however they say it is mainly for traffic concerns.

An Amtrak Coast Starlight train was forced to stop at a Camarillo Metrolink station Saturday afternoon and evacuate passengers because of a Freon leak in one of its cars.

The Coast Starlight was en route from Los Angeles to Sacramento with 134 passengers, an Amtrak spokeswoman said.

Everyone evacuated about 2 p.m. was in good condition and safe, the Ventura County Fire Department reported.

A hazardous materials team was sent to the site. The leak originated from a chiller used to keep food, beverages and other things cold, the Amtrak spokeswoman said.

A SCHOOL has been forced to close today after a chemical spill in one of the science rooms.

More than 500 pupils and staff at Uplands Middle School were evacuated this morning just before 9am when staff detected the smell of chemicals in one part of the school.

Suffolk Fire Service sent crews from Sudbury, Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill to the York Road school.

By the time firefighters arrived all pupils had been sent to the Upper School to ensure they were not at any risk.

Pat Dacy, Suffolk Fire’s group manager, said a chemical spill within a school meant they had to take every precaution.

Firefighters using full chemical uniforms located a “small spill” in one of the science labs before removing it from the school.

POLAND — Firefighters responded to a small chemical spill at Poland Seminary High School on Dobbins Road this morning.

Around 8:30 a.m., someone was cleaning and knocked over a bottle of Xylene, a clear, colorless liquid that can be very flammable. Students were asked to leave the classroom where the spill was contained, but the building was not evacuated, said township Police Chief Brian Goodin.

“It had an odor to it, and as a precaution, they called the fire department,” he said. “It was determined that it was nothing of any major issue. They used big fans to blow the area out, and fortunately it was by one of the main doors.”

FLINT, Mich. -- The Genesee County hazmat team responded to an emergency call Thursday morning that ended up involving a dropped thermometer.
Officials said the Flint homeowner dropped the mercury-filled thermometer inside her home in the 2300 block of Ohio Avenue just before 5 a.m.
She called 911, where operators alerted the fire department who then called in the hazmat team in.
Officials said most of the mercury evaporated, but plans are in place to have the health department brought in as a precautionary measure.

A small fluid spill closed a busy Twin Falls intersection for about two hours Thursday.
The Twin Falls Fire Department was one of multiple agencies that responded to the spill at noon Thursday at the intersection ofPole Line Road and Bridgeview Boulevard.
Battalion Chief Brian Cunningham said several motorists reported a container of fluid blocking the eastbound lane of Pole Line. No witnesses reported seeing the vehicle that dropped it. Cunningham said the container was a 2-gallon weed sprayer containing an unknown fluid that had a vapor cloud coming off it, noticeable even in the rain.
All roads leading to the intersection were closed, except the west-most westbound lane of Pole Line. Cunningham called in a hazardous materials response team from Jerome.

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Hazardous materials crews were called to a Washington County gas station on Wednesday after a fuel leak in the parking lot.
Channel 11's Jodine Costanzo reported that a tanker truck had delivered gas to a BP station in South Strabane Township when about 100 gallons of fuel seeped out of an underground holding tank.
Firefighters and Hazmat crews closed off the parking lot and alerted nearby businesses as they cleaned up the mess.

FIREFIGHTERS cleared up a chemical spillage in a Hampshire supermarket car park in the early hours of today.

A crew from Romsey fire station dressed in protective gear spread granules to absorb dangerous industrial fluids after cordoning off the car park area in Waitrose car park in Alma Road, Romsey, just after midnight.

The fluid was leaking from drums in a parked lorry.

A nail had pierced a 200 litre container causing highly flammable and toxic fluid used in the rubber industry to leak out. The driver raised the alarm.

Attempted theft of ammonia gas perhaps by old-school methamphetamine cookers appears to be the cause of a leak in a cold storage plant in downtown Kent this morning.

Investigators found that someone had taken the cap off an outside valve that was no longer used.

Kent Fire Department responded to a 6:45 a.m. report of a strong chemical smell in the 300 block of Railroad Ave. N. at Washington Cold Storage. Ammonia is used in the plant’s refrigeration process and is considered toxic.

Firefighters quickly cordoned off an area surrounding the business and Kent Police closed West James Street in both directions in order to ensure that no one was exposed to the toxic gas. The gas leak also affected the operations of Mill Creek Middle School and the Regional Justice Center.

CORPUS CHRISTI — For dispatchers Monday at the Corpus Christi police station, an emergency occurred in their own office.

Dispatch center staff were evacuated for nearly two hours from the fourth floor of the building in the 300 block of John Sartain Street about 5 p.m. after its fire alarm system was triggered, spraying a chemical dispersant, said police spokesman Tony Acevedo.

“It was some kind of false alarm,” Acevedo said. “The fire department came and checked it out and no injuries were reported.”

Staff were moved to the department’s Emergency Operations Center at the Frost Bank Building, Acevedo said.

The building’s Halon alarm system is designed to extinguish a fire without the use of water and not damage electronics, fire officials said.

Residents were today allowed to return to their homes almost 20 hours after they were evacuated following a chemical spill.

Six houses were evacuated after the spillage on an industrial estate in Ayrshire around midday.

After spending hours in the Compton area Monday, Page County crews have almost finished cleaning up 750 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled after a truck hit a guardrail.

State police say the driver, David Grimsley of Winchester, was heading southbound on Route 340.

They say Grimsley was crossing the bridge over Compton Creek when he lost control as he poured a cup of coffee. He hit the guardrails on both sides of the road.

Joe Taylor, a hazardous materials officer with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, says, anytime a combustible or flammable material gets on the ground, their main concern is the environment.

"Any kind of chemical getting into the environment or waterways that way, potentially harming any fish or wildlife and certainly the potential for harm of getting into the drinking water," says Taylor.

He says this is an unusual situation, since the truck crashed and began leaking on the bridge with a dry Compton Creek below it.

MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (WSVN) -- HazMat crews arrived at a South Florida airport Sunday to contain a hazardous chemical.

The incident occurred Sunday morning in the customs area of Miami International Airport. Police said a passenger had Mercury in their luggage, and it spilled.

Haz-mat crews were called to the scene to contain the chemical.

Officials said operations at customs were not affected.

ARTIMIS reports the accident occurred at 10:10 a.m. More than 2,000 gallons of fuel spilled from the tanker. Dozens of firefighters and hazardous materials units are on the scene.

Traffic is being diverted off at Ohio 129.

The overturned truck is blocking all southbound lanes and about 2,000 gallons of spilled fuel are being flushed by firefighters and two hazmat crews.

NORTH JACKSON, Ohio - Hazmat crews spent the day Friday trying to keep a spill from contaminating the Valley's major supply of drinking water.

A truck overturned on an Ohio Turnpike ramp in North Jackson late in the morning, spilling it's load of buttermilk. Crews were concerned that the liquid would leak into a stream that flows into the Meander Reservoir.

BONVILLE Creek has been declared unsafe for swimming and fishing following a major chemical spill.

Sawtell residents this morning awoke to a nasty chlorine smell after as much as 7500 litres of sodium hypochlorite, otherwise known as liquid chlorine, spewed from the Sawtell sewerage treatment works.

Sawtell Fire Station commander Keith Rhoades said it was not known at this stage how much had spilled into nearby waterways but the situation was being monitored.

Sodium hypochlorite is used to disinfect reclaimed water produced by the plant. A council spokeswoman said the release was believed to be caused by mechanical failures but the incident had not affected the plant’s operation.

Environmental health crews, a hazardous materials team and county firefighters responded to a spill of 50 to 60 gallons of a corrosive chemical in Camarillo that forced area businesses to evacuate several employees Saturday.

The spill of a copper plating solution in the 300 block of South Lewis Road in Camarillo occurred sometime overnight, the Ventura County Fire Department said Saturday afternoon. It identified the business involved as Church Technology.

Four people from nearby businesses were evacuated as a precaution, according to the Fire Department.

About 3,000 gallons of milk spilled into a swampy-area that feeds into the Meander Reservoir Friday afternoon.

It happened around 1 p.m. after a tractor-trailer lost control and tipped over onto the ramp from Interstate 76 to Mahoning Avenue in Austintown. HAZMAT was called to clean up the spill because milk carries bacteria that can be harmful if it gets into a body of water.

A chemical leak sickened 62 people Thursday at a pharmaceutical plant in east China's Anhui Province, the local government said Friday.

The victims, all of whom were workers of the Wanbei Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd in Suzhou City, fell ill after inhaling fumes from the highly toxic solid phosgene, also known as triphosgene or BTC, that leaked from a laboratory at around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, said Zhu Hai, an official in charge of the city government's emergency response office.

Zhu said 37 workers were still being treated in hospital as of Friday afternoon, of whom eight were in critical condition.

A Seattle Fire hazmat team responded to a chemical leak at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Friday night — but by the time they arrived, the leak of a chemical gas had already cleaned itself up.

Seattle Fire spokeswoman Lt. Sue Stangl said part of the hospital was evacuated at about 9 p.m. Friday near a room where ethylene oxide, a chemical used to sterilize medical equipment, is kept. In the event of a leak, a system in the room generally detects the substance and sets off an alarm, starts its ventilation system and automatically cleans everything — which is exactly what happened.

WILLSBORO — Almost 400 people were evacuated in a half-mile radius here Friday morning after explosive gas began escaping from an underground propane tank.

The 1,000 gallon storage tank at Lakewood Senior Apartments was reported leaking at about 8:40 a.m., Essex County Emergency Services Director Donald Jaquish said.

“We’ve evacuated the apartment complex and the school, along with 15 people from nearby homes.”

A major ammonia leak Wednesday forced the evacuation of about 800 residents living near a Hoke County turkey processing plant run by House of Raeford, a company with a history of chemical safety violations.

One unidentified plant worker was briefly hospitalized after a mechanical failure inside the plant sent about 6,000 pounds of the toxic chemical into the air.

It was the third major chemical accident in eight years for the N.C.-based poultry company. In 2003, worker Bruce Glover died following a chlorine leak at the company's Rose Hill plant. The following year, an ammonia leak at the same plant forced an evacuation and sent 17 workers and neighbors to the hospital.

Following each of those incidents, the proposed fines by N.C. OSHA were slashed - from $6,125 to $3,500 in the first case, and from $74,700 to $19,000 in the second.

About 200 gallons of sulfuric acid leaked from a pipe that broke outside the entrance of the Wynn Las Vegas on the Strip. Clark County, Nev. spokeswoman Stacey Welling told the Las Vegas Sun the accidental spill was caused by a contractor filling the pipe with the chemical right outside the resort. The fire department responded at about 8 a.m. PT, and the spill was contained within about an hour.
Movement along the Strip, jammed with traffic on normal days, was gridlocked in the area near the Las Vegas Convention Center and other venues, including the Venetian Hotel, where the Consumer Electronics Show is being held. More than 120,000 are attending the show, and many were trying to make their way via buses, taxis and cars to the convention center.

HOKE COUNTY (WTVD) -- The House of Raeford turkey facility in Hoke County had to be evacuated due to a hazmat situation Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities tell ABC11 Eyewitness News there was an ammonia leak from a refrigeration area within the plant on Central Avenue around 2:30 p.m.

Fire crews say maintenance work was being done on the valve when it failed.

Officials quickly capped the leak, but a second leak developed and ammonia fumes filled the plant. It took crews several hours to cap the second leak.

Employees were evacuated and emergency officials sent out reverse 911 phone calls to about 800 residents alerting them about the situation.

HOUSTON – All northbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway at 610 were reopened Wednesday morning after HazMat crews cleared a fuel spill on the highway.
An 18-wheeler truck, owned by Kroger, was traveling northbound on the Gulf Freeway around 2:45 a.m. when it lost control on the rain- slick roadway and struck a concrete median.
The crash caused the fuel tank to rupture, spilling diesel fuel all over the highway.
The morning rush-hour commute was delayed a few hours, but traffic returned to normal around 8 a.m.

A train carrying hazardous materials derailed in Lowndes County early today, rolling multiple cars east of South Lehmberg Road.

The westbound Alabama Southern Railroad train hit a broken rail at about 7:30 a.m., overturning 12 cars, according to Columbus Fire and Rescue.

The Columbus Hazmat team was called in to assess three cars that were separately carrying nitrous oxide, turpentine and methyl phenol, a chemical used in the treatment of wood products.

TWIN FALLS COUNTY -- Twin Falls County officials are on the scene of an hazmat incident near the intersection of Highway 30 and 2500 East, just east of Filer.
The accident occurred just after 1 p.m. when a semi-truck carrying beets driven by Eric Palmer, 26, of Twin Falls, ran into a semi-truck with two trailers -- carrying unleaded and diesel fuel --  driven by Cory Slippey, 35, of Rupert, while it was stopped at a railroad crossing.
Twin Falls County tells KTVB around 3,500 gallons of fuel -- both diesel and unleaded -- have leaked from the truck. State hazmat crews are responding to the scene to clean up the spill.

Three workers sustained injuries when an open vessel containing a chemical concoction collapsed in Makarpura on Saturday.

The incident occurred when workers of Sujata Chemicals were mixing chemicals in the vessel, the Makarpura police said. Gangaram Vasava and Mangal Macchi received burn injuries from the toxic concoction, while Mangilal Damor sustained injuries as he fell from a height when the vessel collapsed. The three were rushed to the SSG Hospital in Vadodara. The police said a complaint was lodged about the incident, and samples of the chemicals have been sent to the Forensic Science Lab for tests.

A chlorine gas leak caused the evacuation of an Oregon National Primate Center building in Hillsboro Wednesday morning along with a response from firefighters and a Hazardous Materials Team. The incident happened around 9am when Primate Center employees reported a chemical leak. Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue’s (TVF&R) Engine 64 from the nearby Somerset Station, arrived minutes later. They requested additional resources from the Hillsboro Fire Department and also the regional hazardous materials response team.
Firefighters entered the building known as the Animal Services ABSL3 building and found two 4′ tall chlorine cylinders strapped to a cart. They shut off the flow of chlorine and began monitoring the air quality inside the building. The Hazardous Materials Team later removed the two tanks from the building and continued to monitor the air quality inside the building’s hallways.
Primate Center Health and Safety workers say they were preparing to disinfect a laboratory area with chlorine when one worker said she heard an unusual pop from the chlorine tank’s regulator as she opened the tank’s valve and then began smelling chlorine gas. She quickly activated the building’s safety system, evacuated fellow workers and sheltered the primates in place. The safety systems include an air flow ventilation system that prevented the leaked chlorine gas in the hallway from entering any of the rooms occupied by the primates. No one was injured.

Fire crews have contained a chemical spill at a helicopter maintenance company near Auckland.
Two staff at Airwork New Zealand at Ardmore Airport were evacuated and the site was cordoned off on Thursday morning.
About 300 litres of chromic acid was found to have leaked.
The Fire Service says the chemical has now been neutralised and absorbed, and the building has been ventilated.

A downed power line is being blamed for a sequence of fires and chemical release on 54th Avenue SE Wednesday afternoon.  The Calgary Fire Department had to douse one blaze involving a transformer and two in electrical rooms.  Then in a chemical plant, a release of hydrogen sulfide.  The power outage had disrupted a critical stage of "scrubbing".  Initial readings of the sour-smelling gas were at 30-parts per million.  The Fire Department's Brian McAsey says they had to re-route traffic and evacuate a small area just to be on the safe side.  McAsey adds a hydrogen sulfide reading of 200-parts per million is considered dangerous to humans.

EIGHT people were given medical treatment following a chemical leak at Russells Hall Hospital last night.

West Midlands Fire Service was called to the hospital following the chemical incident in the ground floor laundry.

Alongside fire crews, the Service's hazardous specialist also attended to help contain the clear chemical liquid.

Fire fighters and nurses also treated eight people who were suffering from mild eye irritations as a result of the gas being released from the chemical.

A reaction at a Mount Maunganui chemical plant led to a section of Totara St being blocked off by police and the building being evacuated while firefighters diluted the chemicals.

A plume of white steam erupted from the hydrogen peroxide container filling the facility at Orica Chemnet about 3.15pm yesterday, due to a valve accidently being left open on the filling line.

Site manager Paul Hastie said the hydrogen peroxide - used for bleaching and disinfecting in industrial processes - then flowed into the catchment pit, which was designed to contain such leaks.

"The leaked hydrogen peroxide reacted with dust and dirt residing in the catchment pit, which reacted to form oxygen and water," he said.

Three of dozens of Wayne County bridges seeping mercury will get attention right away under an agreement signed between the state, the county and Occidental Chemical Corp., the state announced Friday.

Aside from the bridges, additional parts at the Wayne County Highway Department yard will be dealt with, according to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

The bridges will be removed or the mercury contained.

"We believe these bridges were constructed of former mercury cell parts from a chlor-alkali plant," Environment and Conservation Deputy Commissioner Paul Sloan said in an e-mailed announcement.

Some chlor-alkali plants produce chlorine and caustic soda using a process that employs "mercury cells" and leaves elemental mercury residue.

The scrap metal that ended up as the small Wayne County bridges may have originally been discarded cells from the 1960s used at a plant in Muscle Shoals, Ala., now owned by Occidental, according to the state.

Crews said the move will allow some traffic flow to ease congestion in the busy West Austin area until the scene can be cleared later tonight, a spokesman said.
It will be another two hours until special equipment arrives that will allow crews to safely remove the 18-wheeler’s haul of 3,800 gallons of sodium hexametaphosphate, a non-hazardous product used in the water treatment process, said Austin Water Utility spokesman Jason Hill. The contents must be removed before the 18-wheeler can be turned up from its side, Hill said.

It’s been an unusually cold December thus far, and the frigid conditions have caused problems countywide – including the spillage of up to 400 gallons of a volatile chemical.

Three Nashville-based emergency management agencies were called but no local officials were notified of the spill, which took place at Quad/Graphics in Dickson and involved the same chemical that severely burned and ultimately killed an employee in August.

The spill occurred early Dec. 10 at the Quad/Graphics plant in the county industrial park when an ice chunk fell and struck a handle, opening a valve on the facility’s solvent recovery system and released 300-400 gallons of toluene, a chemical solvent.

Claire Ho, a Quad/Graphics corporate spokesperson, said the chemical drained across a concrete pad and into a grate, which led to a “drainage ditch” where the spill collected.

The ditch and grate are not connected to the public sewer system, Ho said.
