Fire guts warehouse in central Pa., no injuries
CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) — A ferocious fire has gutted an industrial building and damaged several others in central Pennsylvania.

The three-alarm blaze started about 10 p.m. Wednesday at the former Lear Corp. building in Carlisle, Cumberland County.

More than 100 firefighters from several counties were called in to help. A series of booms were heard throughout the night. It's believed propane tanks stored inside the buildings exploded.

Some residents in the area were evacuated. Several homes sustained minor damage.

The complex has had a variety of owners in recent years. Carlisle Events, owners of the local fairgrounds, bought the property in 2010 and planned to redevelop it.

No one was hurt. Investigators are trying to determine a cause but the fire was so severe they may never be able to determine what sparked it.

One hurt in East Valley propane tank explosion
EAST VALLEY, Wash. -- A quick response limited damage from a propane tank fire at All American Propane on South Keys Road on Monday morning, firefighters say.

Chief George Spencer of the East Valley Fire Department said firefighters arrived within just a few minutes of the 8:49 a.m. alarm and were able to stop the fire from spreading from a shop where it was concentrated. Firefighters protected an adjacent storage building as well as large, nearby propane tanks.

Spencer said one worker was taken to a city hospital by private vehicle after suffering cold thermal burns from coming in contact with the propane, which converts to a liquid when frozen. More information was not available about his condition but the injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Spencer said the 500-gallon tank that started the fire was being moved on a forklift at the time of the incident, which caused black smoke to billow from the area.

Three injured in South Jordan gas explosion
SOUTH JORDAN — Three people were hospitalized Friday after a propane gas leak sparked an explosion on Old Bingham Highway.

The incident took place around 10 a.m. near 6000 West and Old Bingham Highway, according to South Jordan Fire Capt. Nathan Morreale. A group of men who had been privately contracted by the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District were inside a vault painting the pipeline.

Morreale said the men were using a heater that was attached to a propane tank in the vault. It was unclear whether the heater was meant to dry the paint or keep the area warm.

"There was a propane tank with a hose on it and the hose leaked," South Jordan city spokeswoman Kelly Pfost said. "We're not sure what sparked the explosion, but we do know it was related to the propane leak."

Morreale said one man suffered burns to his hands and face and was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in a medical helicopter. He was classified in critical condition.

Worker injured as propane leak forces evacuations at Port of Brownsville
A gas leak at a Port of Brownsville business Monday injured one worker, caused the evacuation of seven companies in the area and released about 57,000 gallons of propane gas into the air, officials said.

Emergency personnel — including Cameron County Emergency Management, a HazMat team and Brownsville firefighters and police — responded about 9 a.m. and worked to fix a valve leak in a propane storage tank at TransMontaigne, a company that transports and stores petroleum and chemical products.

...
The leak started in one propane tank, filled with 57,000 gallons, that connected with three others. The tanks hold about 90,000 gallons of gas each when full, he said.

Workers eventually were able to shut off the valve that connected the four tanks, so that only the one tank leaked its contents.

The injured worker was transported to the hospital after part of the valve struck him when it ruptured, Perez said. He said he did not have details on the man’s condition, but he was coherent after the incident.

Propane tanker catches fire, prompts evacuations
LINCOLN, Calif.—Authorities on Tuesday ordered residents of a Sacramento suburb to leave an area within one mile of a burning rail car loaded with a potentially explosive chemical.
The 29,000-gallon tanker holding liquid propane caught fire in Lincoln, injuring one worker, said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Daniel Berlant. No details on the worker's injuries were available.
Flames shot into the air from a vent as fire crews soaked the tanker to keep down its temperature. Firefighters were allowing the propane to burn off because extinguishing the flames could allow a propane gas cloud to escape and ignite in a fireball, Berlant said.
The tanker located in an industrial area off the tracks could burn into Wednesday, he said. No other structures or train cars were reported on fire.

Minor propane leak closes Amesbury road » Local News » NewburyportNews.com, Newburyport, MA
AMESBURY - Rescue officials closed down South Martin Road Friday night for more than an hour as they cleaned up a small propane leak at the Eastern Propane distribution facility off South Hunt Road.

Fire Chief Jonathan Brickett said only a small amount of the highly flammable liquid escaped from the end of a distribution pipe but it was enough to attract the attention of neighbors, one of whom called authorities.

Propane, like natural gas, is odorless. As a safety measure, an additive is introduced to give it the familiar smell of rotten eggs so it can be detected if spilled or leaking.

The distribution facility, located hundreds of feet away from South Hunt Road, is where Eastern Propane truck drivers come to fill their tanks before delivering propane to customers.

Gas leak related to storm? - Lebanon Daily News
The summer storm that struck northern Lebanon County late Monday afternoon may have contributed to a propane gas leak at a Swatara Township business, the Lebanon County HazMat unit chief said Tuesday.
Emergency crews were sent to Camp Central at 47 Mountain Drive shortly after 6 p.m. after receiving a report of a leaking propane tank.

The 1,000-pound tank rolled over after the ground underneath it became soft, said county HazMat director Ben Herskowitz. The valve became dislodged when it rolled over, causing the leak.

The storm might have been a factor in the tank's rollover, he added.

Air monitoring around the tank showed explosive conditions, Herskowitz said. The tank was about 20 feet from the Camp Central building.

"We could actually see a cloud of propane," he said.

Propane leak closes Route 104A - WCAX.COM Local Vermont News, Weather and Sports-
A propane leak in Georgia closed Route 104A Tuesday afternoon.

The road was shut down after the leak was discovered in a tank at a private home. Fire officials say the leak has been contained, but nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution.

Officials said it could be some time before the road reopened.

"We're cooling the tank and the Vermont hazmat team is here and we're going to actually get closer to the tank and see if we can move it or mediate the leak in whatever way needed," Georgia Fire Chief Chris Gonyeau said.

Fire crews asked people to use Route 104 or Route 7 instead Tuesday, because they said Route 104A could be shut down for several hours.

us_ny: Propane Explosion Kills Maintenance Worker - Gothamist
A Bronx senior center worker was killed yesterday after a barbecue grill he was cleaning exploded with a blast powerful enough to shatter nearby windows. Joseph McLendon, an employee of the Comprehensive Care Management Center in Bronxdale, reportedly set off a chemical explosion after using the wrong kind of cleaning agents on the propane grill. Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Scanlon told the Daily News, "It was a huge, huge blast...It's a miracle more people were not hurt."
McLendon, a father of five, was pronounced dead after being rushed to Jacobi Medical Center. His mother said, "It's the most terrible thing to have to bury your child. I'm devastated. I'm just devastated." But locals wanted to know why such a seemingly dangerous task was being conducted so close to residential buildings. Neighbor Denise Rodriguez said, "Why would anyone leave a propane tank next to a senior center? Why would they do that? It puts people in danger."

The FDNY recommends that propane grills be cleaned at least once a year with soapy water, after making sure the gas tank is turned off. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says 20 injuries occur every year from gas grill fires and explosions.

us_oh: Hazmat team removes leaking propane tank in Canton
CANTON —
The Stark County Hazardous Materials Team removed a leaking 300-pound, commercial-grade propane tank from a northeast Canton neighborhood Monday afternoon.

HazMat Team Manager and Canton Fire Department Battalion Chief Thomas Garra said the tank, which was taken to a remote location, was expected to be removed from the area Tuesday morning by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

Team members were called at 3:28 p.m. to Gage Place and 23rd Street NE where the tank was found. It was emitting gas and lying in the grass beside the road, he said.

“It contained a residual amount so we really didn’t get a major leak,” Garra said. “The leak was plugged and the tank was removed.”

The hazardous materials team cordoned off about 300 feet in each direction. Two hose teams with fog nozzles and another HazMat team member between them determined the source of the leak, he said.

“A fog pattern suppresses the fumes,” Garra said.

The team prevented any danger of explosion. Garra said that without an ignition source, there was no danger of explosion.

us_oh: Leaking Propane Tank Found During Hazmat Training Session
Officials are releasing details of a hazardous material leak, which happened during a hazmat training session at West Harrison weight station on Thursday.
The Indiana State Police say yesterday around 2:45 p.m., troopers and motor carrier inspectors were conducting training on hazardous materials inspections when a truck was pulled off the scales for a routine inspection. During the "walk around" , a trooper noticed a very strong smell coming from within the trailer.
State police notified the Harrison Fire Department and other hazardous materials response units. The investigation revealed the shipper, Clean Harbor Environmental Services out of Cincinnati, was hauling several tanks of various gases including acetylene, propane, Freon, mercury, and other poisonous gases to Chicago when sometime after being loaded or during shipment a 20 pound propane gas tank had an open valve, causing propane to leak.
