WILDOMAR: One person hurt in chemical fire, authorities say
WILDOMAR ---- One person was hurt Monday while helping to extinguish a fire that started in a swimming pool pump at a home in Wildomar, authorities said.

Firefighters with the Riverside County Fire Department responded at 11:25 a.m. to a report of a blaze at a home on Sellers Road, according to a report by Cheri Patterson, a spokeswoman for the department.

A leaky swimming pool pump caught fire, and pool chemicals that were nearby were partially burned, according to the report.

A neighbor who helped extinguish the blaze before firefighters arrived was having problems breathing, the report said. The person was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries.

Hazardous materials officials with county and state fire departments investigated the incident and determined that a relatively small amount of chemicals had leaked from the pump, and the leak did not endanger the community, according to the report.

Chlorine gas leak burns man in Venice store
A man was burned by chlorine gas Friday morning after the chemical leaked at a pool supply store near the US 41 bypass.

According to Sarasota County Fire Department Capt. Susan Pearson, at around 10 a.m., a tank on a chlorine truck suddenly released more than 30 gallons of the gas.

“They called in the calvary, but it wasn’t really an explosion,” Pearson said.

The worker was burned by the gas, Pearson said. She was not sure if he was the driver or an employee of the store, but was taken to Venice Memorial Hospital for treatment. No one else was injured, she said.

Chlorine spill at Newburgh Free Academy
NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- Hazmat crews cleaned up a large chlorine spill at a school in Newburgh at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Fire officials said workers were changing a pump for the swimming pool at Newburgh Free Academy when a valve broke. About 150 gallons of chlorine spilled into the building.

Hazmat crews from Orange County and West Point were called in to help remove the liquid. Normally, the school would have been filled with kids, but the schedule prevented that.

"Fortunately no kids in the school, this week was spring break, so it really reduced the size of the problem here today," said Newburgh Fire Chief Michael Vatter.

Three of the maintenance workers were taken to the hospital for evaluation for chlorine inhalation.

Man taken to hospital after chlorine exposure in Westminster
A Hazmat unit was called out and one man taken to a hospital this morning after two workers at a Hampton Inn in Westminster were exposed to chlorine.

At 8:25 a.m. a caller reported a man at the hotel in the 5000 block of 88th Place was having difficulty breathing, said Westminster Fire Department spokeswoman Diana Allen.

"When they arrived they saw he had been exposed to chlorine in a pool chemical room," Allen said.

A second man who was also exposed, was treated at the scene.

The chlorine powder wasn't mixed with other chemicals and there was no need to evacuate the hotel.

"It isn't clear how they were exposed," Allen said. "It just looks like chlorine power, we're not sure if they spilled it."

Chlorine causes evacuation of Seymour High School (video)- The New Haven Register
SEYMOUR — A bulging bottle of chlorine used to clean Seymour High School’s swimming pool forced the evacuation of students and staff Friday, and ultimately an early dismissal.

School had opened two hours late Friday because of the morning snow, and then closed after a custodian noticed one of the chlorine bottles delivered Friday morning was defective.

There were no injuries during the incident.

According to Director of Security Richard Kearns, the school went into lockdown at around 10:45 a.m. Students and staff then were sent into the steel track and field shed near DeBarber Field for shelter and warmth. Eventually, they went into the school gym, where they waited for the buses to take them home.

An employee raised the alarm when after smelling a strong chlorine smell. Dozens of employees and members were immediately evacuated. Fire officials said the cause of the potentially lethal leak was escaping chlorine vapors caused by an incorrect mixture of pool chemicals.

"When we got in to the building it was above ten to the point where in the room where it was spilled which is the IDLH of dangerous to life and health level, it was above that level. Pretty quickly it started to diminish," said fire chief Richard Doyle.

Chemical spill in Jackson senior community is cleaned up; no injuries reported
JACKSON — A chemical spill in a senior community sent a scare through the quiet neighborhood, as a “plethora” of first responders — some in teal, full-body suits — investigated Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The call came in about 1:30 p.m. simply as a report of a “chemical odor” at Four Seasons. Initial responders traced the source of the odor to a utility-type building near Huntington Drive used to store supplies and chemicals for the community pool, police Sgt. Wayne Olejarz said.

Authorities notified the pool company. Later, as employees of the company carried 50-pound bags of a common pool treatment chemical, sodium thiosulphate, out of the building. Oe of the bags — believed to be the source of the initial call — spilled most of its contents, and “an orange-type, gassy” vapor was released.

Fire crews tackle leaking swimming pool disinfectant
IRE crews were called to a chemical spill at The Herons leisure centre in Haslemere on Monday morning (January 30).

Reports of the incident came in at 8.40am and firefighter Dom Spooner said: "We were contacted by the Environment Agency after a container of the chemical used for disinfecting the pool leaked overnight."

He said it was a container of sodium hypochlorite, which is used in small concentrations in the swimming pool, adding that some of the liquid had entered the waste drains.

The chemical is used for disinfecting and oxidising water, and is what gives off the smell of chlorine. It is not harmful to people in the low concentrations used in pools. However, in higher doses it can cause red eyes and irritation.

Between 500 and 600 litres of the chemical had spilled out, the fireman added, saying that none had got into rivers or streams through the drains but would have been taken directly to the sewage treatment centre.

Chlorination device explodes at SMSU
MARSHALL - Part of the Southwest Minnesota State University campus was sealed off on Wednesday while the Marshall Fire Department and the Southwest Chemical Assessment Team responded to an explosion in the university's swimming pool area. A plastic container called a chemical erosion feeder, used to keep swimming pools clean, exploded in the lower mechanical room adjacent to the swimming pool shortly after 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

No one was injured, but CAT responders donned protective suits in order to remove hazardous material from the building.

SMSU Associate Director of University Relations Jim Tate told the Independent the container - about 3 feet tall and 8 inches in diameter - had been filled Wednesday with 3-inch chlorine tablets instead of the normal 1-inch tablets because the school apparently had run out of the 1-inch tablets. The container wasn't filled all the way to the top as it normally would've been, Tate said, so the volume in the container was the same.

Tate said he was told by the physical plant employee who was working on the pool at the time that about 15 to 20 minutes after the "chlorinator" went back online, it exploded.

"It was the same chlorine, same volume of tablets in the feeder," Tate said. "Nothing changed except the size of the tablets."

Brighton gym accused of dangerous chemical leak (From The Argus)
A CITY centre gym has been accused of putting their staff, the public and firefighters lives at risk after leaking dangerously high levels of swimming pool chemicals into the air.

LA Fitness, in North Road, Brighton denies two offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

The case follows an incident where chlorine gas and chemical fumes caused the area around the gym to have to be evacuated, in August 2010.

Chlorine gas levels in the air were dangerously high and left emergency workers called to the scene feeling ill.

The incident could have been “potentially fatal” Hove Crown Court was told yesterday.

The chemicals in the air were the result of overloading of chemicals into the spa pool.

The water levels of chlorine could have been “harmful to babies”.

Two Bayonne workers reported fine after being sickened by chlorine fumes in pool garage at 16th Street Park
Two Bayonne city workers were taken to the hospital yesterday morning after being sickened when they inhaled chlorine, officials said.
About 11:30 a.m., the two Department of Public Works maintenance workers at the DiDomenico Municipal Pool at 16th Street Park went into a garage where pool chlorine is kept in containers and got hit by a “strong and quick” smell of the noxious gas, officials said.
The men, who were closing the outdoor pool for winter, walked to the 16th Street Fire Station, complaining of eye and throat irritation, officials said.
The Bayonne Fire Department Hazmat Team went to the garage and tested the air, but did not receive any elevated readings, fire officials said.
An open 5-gallon container of pool chlorine was found, and Hazmat members resealed the container and left the doors open to vent the garage, officials said. Bayonne Public Works Director Gary Chmielewski said moisture in the building had created the fumes.

9-year-old responsible for Palo Alto chemical leak
Kids + Chemicals = Danger.

The Palo Alto Police Department today completed their investigation into a chlorine gas leak that left one family homeless and caused the evacuation of an entire apartment complex.

The cause: a 9-year-old child who had been playing with chemicals in the pool room of the Midtown Court Apartments in the 2700 block of Midtown Court.

The explosion occurred at about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, prompting a three-alarm response by Palo Alto police and fire crews. A resident had reported smelling chemicals and seeing smoke, according to authorities.

Palo Alto police Agent Max Nielepko said investigators interviewed a number of witnesses and learned that children had been playing in the pool supply storage unit. The children were located and explained that the storage unit had been left unlocked while maintenance was being performed on the pool.

Pool chemicals possible cause of Palo Alto explosion
Tuesday, September 13 was literally an explosive day in Santa Clara County.

A Palo Alto family was left homeless Tuesday night when a bucket of chlorine tablets blew up at the Midtown Court Apartments at 2727 Midtown Court at about 7:20 p.m.  According to the Palo Alto Fire Department, the explosion prompted a three-alarm response and resulted in the evacuation of several units.

Palo Alto police Sgt. Sacto 9-1-1: Firefighters suffer minor injuries in Rancho Cordova hazmat fire
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries this morning during a hazardous materials incident involving pool chemicals at a waste facility in Rancho Cordova.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District firefighters responded at 11:15 a.m. to a report of a fire involving hazardous materials in the 11000 block of White Road Road. They arrived to find smoke and fumes coming from a hazardous waste storage area on the site, according to a district news release.

Workers told firefighters that they were repacking dry pool chemicals in a 55-gallon drum and it appeared a chemical reaction occurred, causing a small fire and what they thought was off gassing of the material. Workers said they used a dry chemical fire extinguisher on the fire and thought they had slowed the chemical reaction. They left the area unharmed.

Firefighters were able to separate the material, which helped stop the spread and continued chemical reaction, officials said. The district's hazmat team arrived and entered the facility where they further reduced the remaining hazards.

The two injured firefighters were taken to a hospital for evaluation, and both were released for return to full duty.

Pool chemical explosion
NORTH FORT MYERS, FL -
A toxic explosion inside a North Fort Myers pool supply store put two people in the hospital on Sunday.

Deputies responded to Pinch-A-Penny pool supplies just before 2:00 p.m.

According to the store's owner, Matt Roadcap, one customer's chlorine jug had chemical residue other than chlorine lining the container.

The chlorine mixed with the residue, causing a massive chemical reaction.

"It was probably either residual fumes or some liquid gasoline left in their chlorine jug. Once the chlorine hits, bad things happen," Roadcap said.

Two of his employees were sent to the hospital, but they are expected to be fine.

Roadcap says he believes acetone caused the chemical reaction and that this is not the first time this type of accident has happened.

He says these unfortunate chemical reactions are frequent within the industry, and occur when people bring in containers that aren't clean.

"You don't put things in unapproved containers. Bad things happen," he says.

Pool-chemical spill in Portland met by hazmat teams
Dozens of firefighters, many wearing fully enclosed hazardous materials suits, swarmed the Namco facility on Larrabee Road Sunday after 50 to 60 gallons of toxic pool chemicals spilled.

Workers discovered the spill in a storeroom at about 9:40 a.m. A stack of 5-gallon containers of sodium hypochlorite, a pool treating chemical, had toppled, many of them rupturing and leaking their contents, said Public Safety Director Michael Pardue.

The handful of employees in the business evacuated the building, as did workers in the nearby Sherwin Williams paint store and Advance Auto Parts. Nobody was hurt.

The first entry teams, wearing green, Class B hazmat suits, assessed the spill and made sure the chemicals were not reacting with other substances in the warehouse, said Pardue.

Namco, a pool supply company, had technical information about the chemical. In high concentrations it can release a toxic vapor and the liquid is harmful to touch. The company also had neutralizer on site to clean it up, fire officials said.

Garbage truck catches fire in Delhi
A commercial garbage truck was forced to empty its load in a parking lot off of Delhi Avenue Thursday morning after the garbage in the truck caught on fire.

Delhi police and fire department responded to the scene and had the fire out within minutes. The driver was not injured.

Rumpke officials are reminding residents and businesses of what you should and shouldn't throw away.

As a reminder, Rumpke doesn't accept batteries or combustible materials, as they contain chemicals that may ignite. Also as residents wrap-up their spring cleaning and begin opening their swimming pools, local fire department officials and Rumpke remind residents of the proper way to dispose of items like chlorine and cleaning supplies.

"While these items may seem harmless, they could have dangerous implications for our drivers, landfill employees and the environment," said Randy Ellert, Rumpke safety specialist.

For example, pool chemicals are intended to be mixed with large amounts of water. However, if only a small amount of water is mixed with the chemical, a dangerous reaction may occur, including harmful vapors and fires.

"Residents need to realize that you can't throw everything into your trash can," Ellert said. "Chemicals and cleaning supplies that are labeled ‘Danger' or ‘Poison' typically indicate that they are a household hazardous waste and residents need to dispose of them accordingly."

Classes canceled at Fordson High because of pool chemical incident | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Dearborn - One person was overcome with fumes this morning at Fordson High School after pool chemicals were improperly mixed, officials said. The resulting noxious fumes caused the evacuation of the school and the eventual dismissal of classes for the day.
According to Fire Chief Rich Miller, a preliminary investigation shows that pool chemicals were somehow improperly mixed or applied, which caused noxious fumes to infiltrate the school.
Miller said the school employee who accidentally applied the chemical was overcome by the vapors and was sent to a walk-in facility for treatment.
It is believed the chemicals involved were chlorine and muriatic acid, both of which are used to treat pool water. The city of Dearborn also asked for the Wayne County Hazardous Materials Team to respond to the incident.

Bradford Woods chemical accident sends camper, 3 staffers to hospital
MARTINSVILLE — Hazardous fumes at a Bradford Woods swimming pool in Morgan County hospitalized a child camper and three adults Thursday after a strange reaction in the pool’s chemical room.

Thirty swimmers were evacuated from the pool area late in the afternoon after they smelled the strong fumes, Bradford Woods director Shay Dawson said. In all, nurses evaluated 18 youth campers and the 13 adults who were supervising them at Camp Riley, a summer program for children ages 8 to 18 who have physical disabilities.

Emergency medical responders and fire officials also evaluated the children and adults, most of whom were fine.

Apparently 6 to 8 ounces of muriatic acid mixed with chlorine in a chemical room near the pool, Dawson said. Swimmers who had been closest to the irritating fumes appeared to be most affected.

Dawson couldn’t explain Thursday how the two chemicals became mixed, or why.
