Chemical Spill Closes Highway Near Newell, IA
11 weeks ago by dchas
NEWELL – The rollover of a tractor-trailer owned by Packers Logistics out of Kieler, Wis., closed part of Highway 7 just east of Newell in Buena Vista County Wednesday.
The Newell Fire Department, Buena Vista County Emergency Management, Buena Vista County Environmental Health and Zoning, and the DNR have been on site since early this morning.
The accident threw at least three chemical products into the ditch causing the containers to leak or rupture. They include three 55-gallon drums of phosphoric acid, three to five 275-gallon plastic containers of sodium and potassium hydroxide mix, and one 55-gallon drum of chlorine bleach.
"Fortunately, there have been no injuries and the chemicals do not appear to have impacted state waters," said Ken Hessenius, supervisor of the Spencer DNR field office.

Tenn. professor injured shielding students from blast
november 2011 by dchas
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A chemistry lab explosion at Southwest Tennessee Community College's Union Avenue campus Wednesday injured a professor and three students, authorities said.
The male professor, whose name was not immediately released, apparently shielded students from much of the blast, rushing to aid a group experimenting with a mixture of phosphoric acid and an alcohol called 2-methylcyclohoexanol that began to smoke, according to students and college officials.
"He became aware of the imminent danger and did take the brunt of the explosion himself," said Karen Nippert, vice president for institutional advancement for Southwest.
"There was just a loud explosion," said Troy Cox, 21, in a physical science class next door when the explosion shook room 232 in Building M, at the corner of Union and Manassas, just after noon.
"I saw the teacher was bleeding," from arm and head injuries, Cox said.

Instructor hurt in explosion in school lab
november 2011 by dchas
(CNN) -- Firefighters are trying to confirm what chemicals were involved in an explosion around noon Wednesday at the campus of Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis.
"Twelve students were in the classroom. The instructor was injured, suffered cuts to the face, upper body and arms. He was transported to the hospital," said Lt. Wayne Cooke of the Memphis Fire Department. "Three students are being evaluated because of respiratory concerns."
The other students were under observation, he added.
Southwest Tennessee Community College spokesman Robert Jackson released a statement describing a fiery mushroom from the explosion, and saying the cause was thought to be a chemical mixture of phosphoric acid and 2-methylcyclohexanol.
Emergency responders were told 18 milliliters "of chemicals or product" were being heated in a container at the time of the explosion, Cooke said, and a hazardous materials team was working to confirm what chemicals were involved.
The building was evacuated when emergency units arrived on the scene, he said.

Clearwater hazmat site in clean up stage
july 2011 by dchas
Traffic is moving, but clean up of a hazardous materials spill on highway 5 north of Clearwater is still underway. Just before noon Sunday a semi flipped after colliding with a minivan. The rig was carrying hydrochloric and phosphoric acid which spilled across the roadway.
Clearwater Mayor John Harwood says provincial emergency program crews have determined all of the hazardous chemicals remain in the ground and none of the acid reached nearby Raft River. But Environment officials say clearing away the contaminated earth will be a painstaking process that will take days. The earth must be scraped away and the ground below tested until there is no more sign of the chemicals.
RCMP say the crash occurred as the semi-trailer was passing a minivan. The driver of the smaller vehicle suffered serious injuries and two passengers in the van were slightly injured. The semi driver was not hurt.

Chemical-laden truck catches fire
may 2011 by dchas
A truck carrying chemicals caught fire at Chandani chowk early on Thursday. Two firemen were injured in the extinguishing operation. Traffic on both the sides of the highway was disrupted for nearly three-and-a-half hours.
Fire brigade officers said the incident took place around 4 am. “
“The truck was carrying metal containers of acrylic polymer, hydrogen peroxide, phosphoric acid, zinc chloride and calcium chloride. There were also some bundles of ropes and utensils in the truck,” said Prabhakar Umratkar, a station officer with the fire brigade.
He added, “The incident came to light after some of the passengers in the vehicle following the truck saw fumes coming out. We reached the spot in 10 minutes after we got the call. It took about two hours for our 20 member of fire brigade team to bring the fire under control. We had to be extra cautious while extinguishing the fire. Two of the firemen suffered minor injuries.” The traffic on both the sides was dirupted, he said.

Hazmat spill closed eastern stretch of Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County | PennLive.com
february 2011 by dchas
Part of Interstate 81 South in Schuylkill County was shut down for three hours Tuesday after a truck carrying phosphoric acid spilled almost all of its load during a slow leak found at a weigh station.
Four troopers inspecting trucks at the station — near mile marker 132.4 — were hospitalized after being exposed to the chemical — a corrosive, but low-hazard chemical that causes eye, skin and respiratory irritation.
Because officials believe the truck had spilled about 2,600 pounds of the acid while driving for several miles, the road was closed while the Department of Environmental Protection, Hazmat, local fire companies, and a helicopter overhead made sure the spill was cleaned up.
