Police: Barrels of chemicals dumped on road
6 days ago by dchas
ATLANTA — Barrels of chemicals dumped on the side of a road caused a northwest Atlanta intersection to be shut down early Monday morning.
Hazmat crews spent hours cleaning up the mess after several gallons of chemicals spilled onto the road.
Atlanta firefighters were called to the area near Johnson Road and Rockdale Street due to a suspicious odor.
“They were able to determine some barrels of unknown chemical,” Atlanta Fire Department Capt. Matt Lingquist said.
One barrel was leaking chemicals near an abandoned property.
“We believe it was possibly disposed of illegally,” Lingquist said.
Hazmat crews in protective gear quickly identified the chemical as hydrogen peroxide. The chemical is often used as a bleach or cleaning agent and is considered highly reactive

Hazmat team responds to hydrogen peroxide leak outside cocoa factory
august 2011 by dchas
GLASSBORO — A tanker was apparently leaking hydrogen peroxide outside a cocoa factory here Monday night, prompting a response from the county’s hazmat team.
The tanker was leaking at ADM Cocoa on Ellis Street, reports indicated.
Hydrogen peroxide, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency, is corrosive in a concentrated form and can be explosive in not stored under proper conditions.
The clear, colorless liquid is infinitely soluble in water. Agricultural pesticide products usually contain no more than 35 percent hydrogen peroxide, which is usually diluted to 1 percent or less when applied, according to the EPA.

Fire crews attend waste plant chemical leak in Hinckley
august 2011 by dchas
FIRE crews from both Leicestershire and Warwickshire were called to a chemical leak at a waste plant in Hinckley.
Six fire engines had to be called to Augean’s waste transfer station on the A5 after they received reports of a leak of 1,000 litres of hydrogen peroxide at the plant at 11.20pm last Wednesday.
The alarm was triggered when the lid of a 1,000 litre Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) of hydrogen peroxide solution popped off, causing some of the solution to leak from the container onto the floor of the bay where it was contained.
Despite the leak setting off the fire alarm, firefighters were able to discover that a blaze had not been the cause of the leak which was contained within a wall surrounding the hydrogen peroxide tank.

35% H2O2 starts home fire
march 2011 by dchas
Concentrated hydrogen peroxide that leaked from its container caused a fire in a home in Indiana Borough, according to a state police fire marshal.
Indiana fire Chief Paul Koons said firefighters went to a Washington Street home at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. The fire spread from a hallway closet to the basement and took about 10 minutes to extinguish, Koons said.
Four of the firefighters, including Koons, had chemical burns that had eaten holes through their gloves and uniform pants, he said. In all, 13 firefighters were exposed to the chemical.
"It basically turned white where it contacted me, like really, really dry skin. It burned like you were putting needles in your hands," he said.
One firefighter used his cell phone to find the treatment for the burns, a thorough washing with water, which firefighters did at the scene and later at the fire station, Koons said.
Hydrogen peroxide, concentrated at 35 percent, typically is added to water and used as a disinfectant on produce and metal food containers.
Koons said diluted peroxide is used around the house, but in this case a crack developed in the plastic storage jug.

Forklife mishap causes chemical spill - National - NZ Herald News
october 2010 by dchas
Firefighters spent most of the day cleaning up over 600 litres of hydrogen peroxide spilled in Hamilton this morning after workers at a chemicals factory pierced a 1000-litre drum with a forklift.
About 40 firefighters were called to the spill at the Ecolab plant in Te Rapa, in northern Hamilton, just before 10am.
Workers spilled some of the chemical inside the factory, and while trying to clean up took the rest of it outside which also had to be dealt with, Fire Service Waikato assistant area manager Darryl Papesch told NZPA.
Ecolab workers put absorbent material on the chemical, which started reacting with the hydrogen peroxide. They then called the Fire Service, which evacuated the area and neutralised the spill with caustic soda. There were about 20 workers at the site.

Train carrying chemical derails near Tronox plant - The Dispatch
october 2010 by dchas
A train carrying hydrogen peroxide derailed in Hamilton at about 9 a.m. Monday morning.
Monroe County Sheriff Andy Hood said his department had a report of the train derailment, off of Stovall Bottom Road, in a rural area.
Columbus Air Force Base's hazmat teams and the Columbus Fire Department responded to the scene and secured it for several hours before a contractor for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway took over.
"We had a trained get derailed and several cars come off the track. In those cars, we had three cars that were overturned and had hydrogen peroxide," said Martin Andrews, CFD battalion chief.
"Out of those three cars that were turned over, two were letting some of their contents out," Andrews said, noting this is a built-in mechanism, "so it wouldn't build up pressure and explode."
While household hydrogen peroxide is 2 to 3 percent, the chemical being transported was 50 and 70 percent, Andrews said.

Police: HazMat at Darien Rest Area Was Hydrogen Peroxide - Darien, CT Patch
september 2010 by dchas
A hazardous material emergency that forced the shutdown of the northbound I-95 Darien rest area Sunday was prompted by hydrogen peroxide seeping from a tractor trailer, police announced Monday.
Patrols from Troop G were dispatched to the service plaza around 1:30 p.m., according Lt. J. Paul Vance, after a report of an unknown liquid escaping from a parked truck.
When troopers arrived, driver Jouharian V. Khatchik of Pasadena, Calif. told them that he had been hauling eighty 55-gallon drums of hydrogen peroxide (placard #2014). Khatchik said he had stopped at the rest area and noticed the chemical leaking from the truck as he prepared to leave, at which point he called 911.
Darien firefighters, already on the scene when troopers arrived, closed and evacuated the service plaza. Responders from the Department of Environmental Protection and Connecticut Tank Removal, a company that specializes in spill response, also came to the site of the incident.
After containing the liquid, officials determined that the load of barrels had shifted inside of the trailer, forcing one of them against a protruding nail and causing the leak.

Times Square Hazmat Response After Viacom Chemical Spill - Gothamist
august 2010 by dchas
Last night, Seventh Avenue between 42nd and 48th Streets was closed so the Fire Department could attend to a hazmat situation at 1515 Broadway, better known as the Viacom building where MTV, VH1 and other subsidiaries are housed. Why? Because building workers spilled 10 gallons of hydrogen peroxide on the top floor.
The spill was accidental—it seems that a machine the workers were using malfunctioned. The workers refused medical attention after being decontaminated. WCBS 2 reports that dozens of emergency vehicles were at the scene, but just as a precaution. Which brought up the typical mixed reactions from tourists: "I figured if there was something really wrong, obviously they would make sure we weren’t around. [We’re] just watching them do their job and do it well," said one woman from Idaho, while a Connecticut resident said, “Of course I’m concerned. What’s going on here? Because we know something happened here a few months back."
