Toxic farming chemical forces hotel evacuations
april 2011 by dchas
About 40 people were evacuated from hotels near Auckland Airport last night after fumes from a pesticide, which has historically been used in chemical warfare, wafted through their windows from a neighbouring farm.
International guests at Kiwi International Hotel and the Airport Skyway Lodge on Kirkbride Rd, Mangere, started getting itchy eyes due to strong fumes in the air, Fire Service incident controller Grant Thompson said.
One neighbour told NZPA the sensation was similar to when you cut onions.
The Fire Service was called around 10pm and it was established the fumes were caused by a neighbouring strawberry farmer who had poured the soil fumigant chloropicrin on his paddock.
Mr Thompson said the chemical was treated with respect because it has been used in chemical warfare.

Meth lab found in Chesterfield hotel room - News - Progress-Index
february 2011 by dchas
CHESTERFIELD - State Police have arrested a Florida man and charged him with manufacturing drugs after a traffic stop for expired license plates and a search of his Chesterfield hotel room led to the discovery of a methamphetamine lab.
Shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday, Trooper S.D. Holland was flagged down in the 2400 block of West Hundred Road in Chesterfield County. The citizen told the trooper of suspicious activity in the area and provided information on the suspect to the officer.
The trooper then saw the suspect getting into a vehicle and initiated a traffic stop based on expired license plates.
According to State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar, based on information received from the suspect and after an affidavit for a search warrant was obtained, a search of the suspect's room was conducted.
Additionally, six other rooms were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Inside the hotel room, authorities found an active meth lab. Molnar said that the suspect, Joshua A. Rhodes, 31, of Valrico, Fla., had been in the room for several days.
"Chemicals used in making meth are highly poisonous and could pose a hazard to first responders, and law enforcement officers who are investigating the incident as well as to the environment, if exposed to them," Molnar said of the chemicals used in the manufacture of the drug.

Meth lab blamed for Clarksville hotel fire | theleafchronicle.com | The Leaf Chronicle
february 2011 by dchas
A man was injured Tuesday night when he set himself on fire while cooking methamphetamine inside an area hotel room, according to authorities.
Clarksville Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services responded to a fire alarm at the Value Place Inn, at 675 Kennedy Lane, at 8:46 p.m. Tuesday. By the time emergency crews arrived, the sprinkler system had extinguished the fire, Fire Marshall Ray Williams said. Williams said a man who was staying in room 328 was outside trying to use snow to cool himself off when crews arrived.
A search of his room uncovered a burned bathtub, a one-gallon can of camp fuel and the burned remains of a plastic Coke bottle. There was also a strong odor of camp fuel coming from the room, Williams said.
"The temperature in that room had to reach at least 155 degrees for the sprinkler system to come on," Williams said. "We suspected that it was things used to cook meth."
The man had second- and third-degree burns on his face, neck, chest and both arms, Williams said. The man was sedated and transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center's burn unit. He man has not been identified, and his condition is unknown at this time.

Body Found, Evacuations at Denver-area Hotel
november 2010 by dchas
An investigation and evacuation were launched Sunday night at the Marriott Denver West, following the discovery of a body at the hotel and a suspicious odor.
A very active crime scene developed outside the hotel. The call-out involved several fire agencies, the police department, a hazmat mobile unit, the bomb squad and K-9 units.
Thirty-two guests were evacuated from their rooms, left to wonder what had prompted the emergency.
Kristy Kon was just one of the many guests evacuated from the Marriott. According to Kon, “It’s kind of creepy. Who knows what’s going on especially with all these ambulances?”
It all started around 5 p.m., when two maids found a person dead in their room, along with noticing the strong smell of sulfur.
Firefighter Micki Trost with West Metro Fire District said, “The items that they saw and the smell that they encountered, is not going to cause harm to anyone else in the building and identify what is in that room.”
Initial reports were given that the body found was a possible suicide.
Authorities aren’t saying what types of items were found in the room, or in what quantities. They’re also monitoring the air to determine what the odor might be, and when it will be safe for guests to return to their rooms.
During the evacuation, the guests have been allowed to stay in the hotel’s restaurant which was deemed to be safe.

Parma theater locked down after chemical in area sends people to hospital | Idaho News from KTVB.COM | Boise news, Idaho weather, sports, traffic & events | Home
november 2010 by dchas
PARMA, Idaho – A Parma movie theater was put on lockdown Saturday night after several people began complaining of a burning sensation in their eyes.
It happened around 7:45 p.m. at the Motor Vu drive-in theater. The theater offered a Trunk-or-Treat event and then played a monster movie.
An EMS crew was on scene as part of the festivities and some people walked over to the ambulance, saying they felt a burning sensation in their eyes.
Many more people followed with a similar complaint and even the EMS crew was affected.
According to Parma Fire District Fire Chief James Cook, several fire and EMS crews were called onto the scene and the theater was locked down.
"Our idea was to keep control of the situation," Cook said.
Cook said it became apparent once they were on scene what the irritant was and called the lockdown so as not to create a panic.
That irritant was chloropicrin fumigant, which was used Friday in a field south of the drive-in. The fumigant is designed to kill bugs in the soil and is trenched into the soil about 6 to 10 inches. Occasionally, pockets of the fumigant get released into the air, which is what caused the reaction in the people at the theater.

may 2010 by dchas
DALLAS, TEXAS - Earlier today, Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) responded to a call at the Dallas Hometown Suites from a man who was feeling dizzy and faint. Paramedics treated the man and transported him to a local hospital.
However, a DFR worker soon began to exhibit the same symptoms, so firefighters immediately suspected that a carbon monoxide leak had taken place in the building. The firefighters notified DFR's Hazardous Materials Team (Hazmat).
The residents that were home at the time quickly evacuated to the Radisson Hotel across the street while Hazmat shut the gas off to the building and located the leak.
It's still unknown what started the leak. However, there were no life threatening injuries during the events, according to DFR.
