Five-alarm fire at Doyle Manufacturing complex in Quincy
QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - Fire investigators return to the scene Wednesday of a five-alarm fire at the Doyle Manufacturing complex at 40th and Broadway in Quincy.
...
A Doyle spokesman says the fire was in a building where they paint fertilizer equipment.

Tipton says that building contained flammable materials like aerosol cans, which led to several explosions inside.

"It's always a dangerous situation when you come on a manufacturing facility because you don't know what's inside at first and the first moments are a little bit anxious when you first start," said Tipton.

Tipton says the metal roof on that building collapsed on top of the fire, making it difficult to fight the flames.

Arizona Chemical Fire Extinguished Quickly
A fire at the Arizona Chemical plant in Springfield Tuesday was quickly put out.

But there are still questions over how the fire started.

Around one o’clock, emergency workers responded to a fire originally reported at Rock-Tenn paper mill. The location was quickly changed to Arizona Chemical.

Firefighters from Springfield and Panama City quickly jumped into action to put out to blaze.

Both units, along with Arizona Chemical’s in-house fire and rescue team, had the fire under control within twenty minutes.

While the location and source of the fire are known, the cause is not.

"We're going to do a root cause find out what the problem is and make sure that this doesn't happen again to the best of our ability. But the good thing is no injuries, no incidences, no destruction, and everyone is safe." said DeVaughn Stephens of Arizona Chemical.

At the time of the fire, there was supposedly a lot of tall-oil in the pond, which is quite flammable.

Big rig carrying highly flammable chemicals crashes on Highway...
PLEASANTON, Calif. — A big rig carrying flammable chemicals slammed into the center divider of Highway 680 near Pleasanton late Sunday, jackknifing and triggering a traffic slowdown that lasted for nearly seven hours, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Battalion Chief Jack Neiman-Kimel said the accident required the deployment of a hazmat team because included among the truck’s load was “a couple drums of some hazardous material. He has a drum of lithium and a drum of Trimethylgallium.”
Both chemicals are used in the production process of semiconductors and electric batteries and can catch fire when exposed to air.
Neiman-Kimel said about 100 gallons of diesel fuel did leak out of the truck and also had to be cleaned up.

Canada News: Dust, ‘poor housekeeping’ possible culprits in sawmill blast
Workplace safety experts are highlighting the dangers of poor housekeeping in sawmills in the wake of a deadly explosion at a Prince George sawmill on Monday.

The cause of the blast has not been determined but high accumulations of dust, which can be extremely combustible when a spark is present, were found inside the Lakeland Mill sawmill — something University of Toronto workplace safety expert Graeme Norval says shouldn’t occur.

“It’s poor housekeeping — you get piles of dust on the floor, or on the pipes, it’s dirty, the dust gets into the air,” said Norval, a chemical engineer who teaches courses in factory safety. “Once you get the dust in the air it’s like having a flammable gas mixture, and it just finds a source of ignition and up it goes.”

He said it’s just “common sense” that management should be inspecting vigilantly — “this is not new or novel.”

Two workers were killed and nine remain seriously injured from the blast that tore through the sawmill Monday. Two dozen workers had been in the factory’s lunchroom in a training session at the time.

CSB Report on 2010 explosion
Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW) - It was an explosion that could be heard for miles. An empty tank was being repaired at the DuPont facility in November of 2010 when it blew up, killing Rich Folaron, 57, of South Whales.
Now, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board has answers as to why this tragedy happened.
"The accident occurred while a contract worker was welding a tank that unknown to him contained flammable gas," Chemical Safety Board Chairman Rafael Moure-Eraso said.
The explosion occurred because there was a hole in the pipes leading from one tank to another. CSB explained how this happened in a computerized video they prepared. WKBW did not use some of the video because of its graphic nature.
"A whole around the agitators shaft was a path for ignition. Sparks could have fallen into the tank even as flammable gas drifted toward the sparks," explains the CSB video.

Arlington Heights blaze injures firefighter, resident
An Arlington Heights man was burned and a firefighter was injured in a Wednesday night house fire that exploded in the man’s basement, but officials said their injuries could have been much worse.

The man was able to escape the smoky basement after chemical fumes exploded in his face, and firefighters pulled out of the building just before the first floor collapsed.

“We got out just in time,” said Arlington Heights fire Lt. Ray Loch.

Firefighters evacuated the house after a firefighter in a stairwell was thrown back during a flashover, injuring him.

The first floor collapsed shortly after firefighters went into a defensive position, Loch said.

The homeowner was working to plug a hole with a flammable material when, fire officials believe, the water heater kicked on and ignited fumes from the patching material about 5 p.m.

Improperly stored cleaning rags blamed in Switchgear fire
MIDDLETOWN — The spontaneous combustion of cleaning rags stored improperly caused a fire that left an estimated $2.5 million in damages to Midwest Switchgear Services late last month.
Middletown Fire Marshal Bob Hess has ruled the fire accidental due to the combustion of the “poorly discarded cleaning rags stored in an improper container close to a table storing ignitable liquids” at the facility at 4014 Tytus Ave., according to a release.
Fire crews had a crane late last week remove the roof to sift through the debris left by the fire.

EAST HEMET: Pot lab blamed for house explosion
Authorities are searching for two men who fled a suburban East Hemet home Wednesday afternoon during an inferno caused by a marijuana lab explosion.
Riverside County sheriff’s investigators determined burning marijuana chemicals set the blaze that destroyed a home at the corner of Acacia Avenue and Lake Street, in the unincorporated neighborhood of Little Lake.
The Sheriff’s Department Special Investigations Bureau issued a statement Thursday that said two men were seen fleeing after several explosions were heard just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Detectives believe the men were using a flammable substance to extract concentrated cannabis from marijuana plants in the garage. Evidence suggests a spark ignited the fumes, which caused an explosion and flames that consumed most of the home, according to the statement.
The fire also caused ammunition in the home to discharge and fire at the same time firefighters arrived.

Fire Prompts Evacuation of Bend Research
BEND, Ore. -- Bend Research employees were evacuated and fire crews were called in when a chemical drum with a carbon filter ignited Tuesday afternoon, but workers used a fire extinguisher to contain the blaze, fire officials said.
Firefighters responded to an alarm around 1:40 p.m. at the medical research firm at 63045 Corporate Place (off Empire Avenue), said Deputy Fire Marshal T.J. Johannsen.
Arriving crews found the building had been evacuated and workers were gathered away from the building on an adjoining parking lot, she said.
The fire began in a drum, about 55 gallons in size, located in a small room off the northwest corner of the building, easy to reach from an outside door, Johannsen said.
The filtering system of the drum uses activated carbon to filter various solutions, the fire official said. A highly flammable chemical was being processed by the system when the fire broke out, Johannsen explained.
Because the container malfunctioned, a pocket of concentrated air in the drum was able to reach an ignition source, she said.
The resulting fire was able to heat the drum, causing it to break down, but the blaze was contained in the area of origin, Johannsen said.
Workers used a fire extinguisher to slow the fire’s progress, keeping it contained before firefighters arrived, wearing breathing apparatus as a precaution.
Johannsen said the quick actions of workers who activated emergency plans had the building evacuated in minutes.
“This is a good reminder for everyone to never ignore an alarm,” Johannsen said in a news release. “Always take smoke and the alarms seriously. They may one day save your life.”PrintEmail

AMC waste dumping site catches fire
AHMEDABAD: City reported three major fire incidents on Sunday afternoon. In the first incident, an AMC waste disposal site in Gyaspur village in the outskirts of the city caught fire on Sunday evening after a dumper rammed into a stationary electric pole. Three fire fighters and two tankers of Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AEFS) doused flames. AFES officials also attended fire calls from Odhav and Sarkhej-Bavla highway.

The officials said fire at Gyaspur was a major operation as they had to ensure that the fire does not spread in the highly inflammable heaps of waste. Another major operation was carried out in Odhav near Takshshila Society where nearby chemical units had disposed of their chemical waste near residential area and set it on fire.

"Nearby residents called us up after the burning chemical spread a stench in the area along with lot of smoke and fumes that caused eye and nose irritation. We sent six vehicles including fire fighters and tankers to control fire," said AFES officials.

Magnablend Chemical Co. Cited By OSHA Over Explosion, Fire « CBS Dallas / Fort Worth
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited the Magnablend Chemical company for seven serious violations and and levied a $45,000 fine for last year’s explosion and fire at the company’s Waxahachie factory.

The report concludes a six month investigation, in which OSHA says workers at the plant were exposed to fire hazards by a ventilation system that was far inadequate for what the company was doing.

“Magnablend exposed its workers to fire hazards by failing to provide adequate ventilation that would have removed flammable hydrogen and other vapors,” said Jack Rector, OSHA’s area director in Fort Worth. “OSHA’s standards must be followed to prevent injuries and illnesses. It is fortunate that no one was injured.”

Orem fuel company engulfed in chemical fire
OREM -- A comb of black smoke arched above Utah County early Thursday afternoon after a chemical fire burst out at an Orem fuel company.

The fire started around 12:36 p.m. at the cinder block warehouse occupied by 801 Racing. Orem fire inspector Casy Vorwaller said the company makes Ferox fuel additives designed to increase a vehicle’s mileage. Workers were pumping fuel Thursday, Vorwaller said, when malfunctioning equipment sprayed flammable liquid on a hot pump. The liquid then ignited.

“Once a flammable liquid goes, it goes fast,” Vorwaller added.

Crews from Orem and Provo responded to the blaze and had it under control quickly. Vorwaller said firefighters fought offensively, meaning they were able to get inside the building to extinguish the flames. Damage to the building was limited due to its cinder block construction, Vorwaller said, though the fire did spread to the wooden roof and rafters.

Man killed in freak accident in factory
A 30-year-old man was killed in a freak accident on Wednesday morning while he was working in a plastic recycle factory — Surya Traders in Kaikondanahalli on Sarjapur Main road in R.R. Layout. The deceased identified as Niranjan Ramdev Prasad was a native of Bihar. According to preliminary investigation, the incident took place around 12:30 pm when Niranjan was trying to cut open a 20 litre plastic drum, filled with industrial waste with an electrical cutter.

Accidentally, the chemical drum exploded and he fell on the electrical cutter which cut into his chest and he died on the spot. The blast led to a fire in the factory. The factory workers who were in the premises tried to douse the fire with water. Three fire tenders finally extinguished the fire. Property worth `2 lakh has been destroyed in the fire.

U.S. Chemical Safety Board report on Gallatin fire
January 5, 2011, Nashville, TN – The U.S. Chemical Safety Board today released its final report on three accidents that occurred in 2011 at the Hoeganaes powdered metals plant in Gallatin, Tennessee. Flash fires and an explosion killed a total of five workers and injured three others.

The CSB investigation found that significant amounts of fine iron powder had accumulated over time at the Hoeganaes facility, and that while the company knew from its own testing and experience with flash fires in the plant that the dust was combustible, it did not take the necessary action to reduce the hazards through engineering controls and basic housekeeping. The investigation also found that Hoeganaes did not institute procedures such as combustible gas monitoring or provide training for employees on avoiding flammable gas fires and explosions.

Minn. School Safety Procedures
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It's been nearly two weeks after a high school science experiment ended in a tragic accident.

In Maple Grove, four students were injured after their teacher mixed flammable liquids which then exploded.

Since then, schools across the state are reviewing their safety procedures.

Inside your everyday middle school science lab, you've got the basics, your fire extinguisher, your safety goggles. However, inside science teacher Corey Doranck's lab, a brand new safety feature is a little harder to see, they're tables.

"It'll be safe now to have the cords plugged in here," Corey Doranck said.

Before these tables, cords were plugged in at wall outlets clogging walkways for students.

Not only do these tables alleviate that problem, but since they're smaller, they create more space.

Experts say not having enough space to safely conduct experiments is the leading cause of science lab accidents.

Possible biological agent prompts evacuation of Kingsport Justice Center- Kingsport Times-News
Federal authorities are on their way to Kingsport after preliminary tests on a suspicious package — confiscated during the Nov. 20 KPD arrest of a Liberian man wanted by the Department of Homeland Security — have identified it as a possible biological agent.

The Kingsport Police Department, courts and support facilities were evacuated Tuesday as authorities tested air qualities within the Justice Center. Kingsport police and fire officials have described the suspicious materials as a clay-type ball wrapped in plant matter, comparable to a corn husk. It has allegedly tested positive for proteins and as a flammable solid — a combination HAZMAT units report as present in biological weaponry.

"That gives us a red flag," said KPD Chief Gale Osborne, adding the FBI will conduct further testing on the object's components.

"It could be nothing, or it could be. If it's biological, that's the concern."

Chemical reaction in Northwich threatens lives of workers
The Health and Safety Executive has prosecuted Thor Specialities Ltd as a result of a potentially fatal chemical reaction at its plant in Wincham, Northwich on 23 August 2007.

An employee at the plant had been mixing solid and liquid chemicals which eventually caused the release of both toxic and flammable substances into the workplace laboratory.

The employee had continued to mix the chemicals together after mistakenly presuming that as there was no initial reaction to the mixing process that it was safe to continue doing so.

However the chemical reaction suddenly got out of control and generated the hazardous substances into the working environment. The chemicals had reacted so rapidly that it became impossible for the employee to bring the situation safely under control and he had to flee the building.

Peru School evacuated due to chemicals
PERU — A chemical spill at Peru Middle High School prompted an evacuation of the building Tuesday morning.

Interim School Superintendent A. Paul Scott said that during early morning classes on Tuesday, a teacher and some students noticed a smell emanating from an OSHA-approved flammable cabinet located in a High School science lab.

The smell was apparently the result of a chemical spill in the cabinet, which was directly vented into a chemical vapor hood, immediately removing vapors from the building.

Scott said Tuesday afternoon that he believed the incident had caused no harm to students, faculty or staff.

...
The school promptly notified Clinton County Emergency Services, the Peru Fire Department, the Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Conservation, and Scott said the agencies responded quickly.

“It’s best to have all agencies involved,” he said. “I appreciate very much their assistance throughout the morning and day.”

In consultation with these agencies, it was decided that the school should be evacuated as a precautionary measure, so about 1,000 students in grades 6 through 12 were brought to the primary and intermediate school campus, where they were picked up by school buses and released just before noon.

4 killed, 12 injured in fire at MIDC dyeing units
A massive fire broke out in two dyeing units in Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) phase II here on Wednesday killing four people and injuring 12. The fire was sparked due to some mechanical fault in Pooja Dyeing, and spread to SV Fabrics, which is adjacent to it.
Four industrial workers, Kuldeep Mohilee, 35, Nandkumar Jha, 40, Mohiddin Garib Miya ,52, and Ramprakash Tiwari, 40, were killed in the fire.  Dilip Gund, the deputy chief fire officer of MIDC, Dombivli said: “We got a phone call at 3.40am, informing us of the fire. When we reached the spot, the fire had begun to spread, so we had to control it and not let it spread to other units.”

When the fire broke out, around 100 employees were in the factory. While some managed to rush out, a few were trapped in the building. “It took four hours and 12 fire tenders to extinguish it. We rescued 18 employees from the first and second floors.”

Prima facie, it was found that a pipeline carrying some inflammable chemical burst and the chemical caught fire. “It then assumed gigantic proportions as the store room contained clothes, paper and other material that fed the fire,” said Gund.

Hazmat Crews Contain Train Car Leak in Arabi
ARABI, ST. BERNARD PARISH—

State Police Hazmat crews worked to contain formic acid that was leaking from a rail car early Wednesday morning.  The east and westbound lanes of St. Claude Avenue near Center Street in Arabi were shut down for a few hours.

An observant railroad worker spotted the leak and called authorities around 7 a.m.  Fire Chief Thomas Stone says the situation could have been a lot worse.

“It could have been a danger to people’s heath. It’s flammable and is also a health hazard. It’s 95% formic acid in that rail car but would have had to have had a larger leak and a vapor cloud to cause harm. And none of that occurred, thank goodness,” said St. Bernard Fire Chief, Thomas Stone.

McMinn Co. firefighters battle large cabinet store blaze
Firefighters from all across McMinn County were called to a large furniture fire in Riceville early Wednesday morning.

In all, ten different stations helped battle a blaze at McDonalds Custom Cabinets and Furniture on Highway 11.  Owner Bryan McDonald said the fire started around 9:15 a.m.

He said one of the store's employees were working with a flammable chemical in the spray room.  The material, which the store often uses, somehow caught flame and burnt down the rest of the building, according to McDonald.

"It was like a matchstick," he said. "When it [the fire] went, there was nothing to stop it."

Garage used to store ammunition, harzadous materials catches fire, forcing evacuations
Two Glendale firefighters sustained minor injuries Thursday morning while responding to a fire in a residential garage that was used to store ammunition and hazardous materials, officials said.

The unknown nature of the chemicals, the explosions of fuel containers, and the fire setting off ammunition rounds at 6:21 a.m. in the 1100 block of North Isabel Street prompted authorities to evacuate six adjacent homes and six others on Jackson Street, Battalion Chief Vincent Rifino said.

Hazmat crews were called in along with Los Angeles County public health officials to clean up the controlled chemicals, for which the homeowner, a retired chemist, had a license to own, officials said.

The homeowner, Bob DeVoe, told fire crews he didn’t know what types of chemicals were inside his home or backyard because he had been collecting the substances for many years, Rifino said.

DeVoe was also a firearms enthusiast, Rifino added.

“We were dealing with an emergency of electrical with ammunitions, hazardous materials and flammable liquids,” he said.

Multiple departments respond to fire at Wickliffe industrial site
Blvd., Wickliffe.

Initial indications are the fire may have been related to a highly flammable gas that is a byproduct of the chemical process used at the plant, according to a Wickliffe Division of Fire media release.

According to Wickliffe fire officials, multiple employees of the manufacturing plant called 911 at 5:41 p.m. Sunday to report a fire inside the plant.

Mutual aid at the scene was provided by Willowick, Willoughby, Euclid, Highland Heights, Willoughby Hills and Mentor fire departments, while Eastlake fire personnel manned Wickliffe’s fire station during the incident. Lake County Fire Investigation Unit is looking into the cause of the fire.

The fire was reported to be under control by 6:07 p.m., according to Wickliffe fire officials. The fire was contained to one reactor in the plant and does not pose a hazard to the community, according to the statement.

UPDATE: Girl Scouts Gauze Scare Diffused
Several fire trucks, ambulances, police cruisers, a hazmat team and a bomb squad were on the scene at the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts building on Turnpike Street Wednesday afternoon.

Children and staff were quickly evacuated from the building, and emergency crews stood ready for action. Traffic backed up as concerned commuters gazed at the scene. A couple hours later, the danger was removed and the building was fine.

What terrifying items were found that caused this panic? Gauze pads.

"A member of the North Andover Fire Department was called by the staff," Girl Scouts spokesperson Allison Rubin said. "They were concerned that first aid kits had become a fire hazard."

In the 1930s and 1940s, gauze contained acid, used in treating burns.

"It was very common back then," Rubin said.

But over time, when the material breaks down, it has the potential to become flammable. The chemicals that the Girl Scouts' gauze were saturated with had crystalized and had become a fire hazard and potentially explosive. So the staff at the Girl Scouts called the Fire Department.

When the first aid kits were taken apart, aking the chemicals more vulnerable to explosion, the Fire Department then brought in a hazmat team -- made up of firefighters from several area communities -- and the state bomb squad, Fire Lt. Robert Bonenfant said.

"Especially when dealing with chemicals and volatile substances, we always go on the side of caution," Bonenfant said.

There were no fires or injuries, and Bonenfant added that the building is fine now. All of the potentially harmful materials were removed and brought to the local recycling center, where they were destroyed.

Chemical spill disrupts Gypsum businesses
YPSUM, Colorado — Emergency cleanup crews responded to the Highway 6 Store in Gypsum around 11 a.m. Thursday after a semi-truck driver noticed some of his hazardous cargo was leaking.

The Highway 6 Store is a Shell gas station located near the Interstate 70 interchange.

A drum of acentonitrile — which is sometimes used as a paint-thinner or cleaning product and can be highly flammable — spilled in the back of a FedEx truck.

“I saw a leak and did what I was supposed to do,” the driver said before declining further comment.

The gas station, the Gypsum Grill and a liquor store were evacuated while crews handled the mess.

“Acentonitrile tends to collect, so the wind (was) a good thing,” said Gypsum Fire Protection District Chief Dave Vroman.

05/25/2011: EPA Removes Chemicals from Former Wabbaseka School
(DALLAS – May 25, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in cooperation with the City of Wabbaseka, Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM), Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently removed about 300 abandoned chemical containers from a demolished school in Wabbaseka, Arkansas. The chemicals removed included flammables, oxidizers, corrosive acids, corrosive bases, toxics and non-regulated materials.

“People living around the demolished school can rest assured that their health and safety will not be compromised from potentially dangerous materials,” said Al Armendariz EPA Regional Administrator. “Thanks to the collaborative effort of the EPA, ADEQ, FDA, ADEM and the City of Wabbaseka, a potentially dangerous situation has been defused.”

The site is the former Wabbaseka High School Science Laboratory chemical storage room. The school was abandoned in 1996 and demolished in January 2011. During the demolition, authorities discovered the chemical storage room contained various laboratory chemicals. However, demolition contractors completed demolition of the school building with the exception of the chemical storage room.

Tank accident releases hazardous waste water
Solvent Resource Management Ltd has been fined £150,000 after a spill released waste solvents and water at its chemical plant in Rye, East Sussex.

A steel tank holding solvent and contaminated water collapsed onto a retaining wall, releasing the fluids into the surrounding land.

The 340 tonnes of solvent and water was potentially hazardous and highly flammable, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The tank was found to have been damaged by internal corrosion.

A second tank was damaged during the accident, knocking off a valve which also released contaminated waste water on to the site and neighbouring property.

The area was cordoned off by East Sussex Fire for two days due to the potentially hazardous nature of the incident.

BREVARD - Emergency crews were at the scene of a possible methamphetamine lab fire in Transylvania County on Saturday.

The blaze occurred on Mountain Glen Road in Brevard at about 5 p.m., FOX Carolina News reported.

When police, who were there on a disturbance call, confronted the three people inside the home, someone sprayed the officers in the face with an unknown substance, deputies said.

The residents then set the apartment on fire, police said.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly, but one firefighter and three officers were injured.

The three people in the home were taken into custody with charges pending, police said.

Brevard City Manager Joseph Moore told FOX Carolina News that a hazmat team did not find any substances at the scene, so they assume that the chemical was some sort of flammable liquid.

According to Moore, three of the four first responders taken to an area hospital were released.

Investigators have reopened all the apartment units at the scene except the apartment where the fire occurred.

Chemical Spill Closes Doddridge County Road - State Journal - STATEJOURNAL.com
The driver of a tanker truck carrying a chemical wrecked in a Doddridge County creek Wednesday, emergency officials said.
It happened on state Route 23 about a mile south of Center Point.

The driver hit a turn too fast, lost control, went through a guardrail, over an embankment and landed in a creek, spilling its chemical into the water, authorities said.

There is an ignition and respiratory concern, so crews are keeping residents out of the area, but they're not evacuating.

Route 23 will be closed for several hours while crews clean up the area.

They have to extract the chemical from one of the tanks to the other before removing the truck from the creek.

us_nc: 8,000-gallon chemical spill contained
WELCOME - Hazardous-materials crews averted a potential disaster yesterday morning when they quickly contained a chemical spill from a tanker that overturned on N.C. 150, authorities said.
The wreck occurred near the banks of Reedy Creek. The ground near the creek soaked up some of the 8,000 gallons of hazardous chemicals that spilled from the tanker, which was making a delivery to a business along the highway, said Doug Lowe, Davidson County's emergency-services director.
The Arcadia Fire Department quickly used a long pipe with a fiber net that absorbed much of the remaining chemicals, Lowe said. That device also acted like a dam to prevent the chemicals from reaching the creek.

us_nc: Homes, businesses evacuated after chemical spill
A tanker carrying hazardous chemicals jack-knifed on N.C. 150 just before 8 this morning, forcing the evacuation of homes and businesses near Reedy Creek.
N.C. 150 is closed between Friendship Church Road and Hampton Road. The accident happened near Kurz Transfer Products, a company that makes metallic foils.
Drivers are urged to avoid this area if possible. A detour has been set-up from Byerly Road to Old Mill Farm Road to Hampton Road back to Highway 150. The road will likely be closed for 8 to 12 hours, said Doug Lowe, the emergency-services director for Davidson County.
Lowe said that the truck was hauling ethanol ethylacetate, toluene and methyl ethyl ketone -- all flammable solvents. Toluene is the most worrisome, Lowe said, because it is so highly flammable.
Hazardous-materials crews from as far away as Greensboro are trying to contain the spill, and they are putting foam on it to neutralize the chemicals and prevent a fire.
