Home damaged in household chemical bomb explosion
13 days ago by dchas
UNION TOWNSHIP | Authorities said a home in the Shorewood Forest subdivision was damaged Saturday after two household chemical bombs exploded on the lawn.
A 56-year-old woman told Porter County Sheriff's Department investigators that she and her husband were awoken by a "thud" outside their home about 12:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Westchester Circle.
About an hour later, they heard another noise they thought was possibly their cat knocking something off a table. The woman said they looked around the house, didn't see anything abnormal and went back to bed.
That morning, though, they discovered a window facing the front yard was shattered and areas of their lawn had burn marks next to two plastic bottles.
Authorities said they believe one of the bottles was thrown at the window and and it appears both bottles were used to create a bomb-like device using household cleaners.
Officers said the family initially wondered if they had been targeted because of their Muslim faith. On Monday, Sgt. Larry LaFlower, public information officer with the sheriff's department, said investigators found nothing leading them to believe the vandalism was a possible hate crime.

Police say two students have been taken into custody after two chemical-filled bottles exploded at a Memphis high school.
Memphis police said in a news release Thursday night that two 18-year-old students of Craigmont High School were charged with aggravated assault, felony reckless endangerment and possession of a prohibited weapon.
The high school was evacuated just before noon in what school authorities called a prank explosion. Officials say an assistant principal with asthma went to the hospital after inhaling smoke produced by the mixture. Police said a bomb threat had been called in to the school beforehand.
Shortly after, another bottle exploded about 15 miles away outside a Kroger grocery store. Kroger spokesman Joe Bell says a customer accidentally left behind a bottle with dry ice. No one was injured.

C&EN report on Esconido Explosives House seminar
4 weeks ago by dchas
On Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, a gardener was seriously injured when he stepped on some gravel in the yard of a San Diego-area home and the ground exploded beneath his feet. Subsequent investigation of the house and its grounds revealed what authorities called the largest cache of homemade explosives ever found in the U.S. They deemed the house too dangerous to clean out and burned it down instead.
At the American Chemical Society national meeting in San Diego last month, in a symposium organized by the Division of Chemical Health & Safety, officials described how the incident unfolded.
Fire and ambulance crews initially responded to the scene; then they called the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department when they realized that the gardener’s injuries were from an explosion, said Nick Vent, an environmental health specialist in the Hazardous Materials Division of the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health.
Sheriff’s officers subsequently took the house resident, George Djura Jakubec, then 54, into custody for questioning; brought in bomb squad and hazmat crews; and evacuated the neighbors. The property is in a residential area, on unincorporated land but surrounded by the city of Escondido in northern San Diego County. It is also a few hundred feet from Interstate 15.

Two Bountiful High students arrested after homemade bombs explode
6 weeks ago by dchas
Two students were arrested Wednesday after Bountiful police said they detonated four small homemade bombs around the city, including one inside their high school.
Bountiful police Sgt. Gary Koehn said the detonation of the small chemical bomb at Bountiful High School was one of four that occurred about 8:20 a.m. No one was injured and no property damage was reported.
Koehn said the other three bombs, one of which went off in a church parking lot about a block away, exploded in the neighborhoods surrounding the high school.
Koehn said the students — a 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man — said they tossed the bombs at random because they wanted to "hear the loud boom." He said the two didn’t intend to hurt anyone.
The bombs were constructed from several household items combined in a plastic water bottle, Koehn said. He said the homemade devices spewed hydrochloric acid and created loud bangs.

REGION: Escondido "bomb house" controlled burn a model for nation, expert says
8 weeks ago by dchas
SAN DIEGO ---- It sounded like the craziest idea. But the plan to burn down an Escondido house full of explosives and hazardous materials went off so well it has become a model studied by safety professionals nationwide.
That was the judgment of industrial safety expert Neal Langerman, who spoke about the daring plan's long-term impact Monday. The house at 1954 Via Scott in northwestern Escondido, known as the "Escondido bomb house," no longer exists. Its destruction on Dec. 9, 2010, was carried out with no loss of life or injury, and without contaminating the neighborhood.
Public safety agencies worked together superbly, even though there was no precedent for dealing with such a powder keg in a residential neighborhood, Langerman said at the American Chemical Society convention.
Held at the San Diego Convention Center, it continues through Thursday.

Handmade bombs found in Lemon Twp.

LEMON TWP. – The Butler County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Unit responds time-to-time to small, hand-made bombs, but never have they found as many as nine, like the batch found on a residential street Tuesday morning, Butler County sheriff’s officials said.
“They think it’s a joke and they think it’s kind of funny,” said Sheriff Rick Jones. “They blow mailboxes up in the process. They blow your fingers off. They spew acid out. It’s very dangerous.”
Eight of the plastic pop bottle devices – sometimes called “MacGyver,” “Drain-O” or “over-pressurized” bombs – blew up in five yards on Hickory Street, said Spc. Mike Grimes, the unit’s commander.
Several neighbors reported hearing gunshots around 6:15 a.m. and at least one woman called 911. The street was evacuated for a short time.
“One (explosion) measured over a 15-foot diameter,” Grimes said.
At least one partially made bomb was left behind in a driveway, Grimes said. He believes the culprits – thought to be juveniles – were probably in the midst of filling it with chemicals and were scared off by a neighbor or police, Grimes said.

Four teens charged in explosions, fires in Livermore Falls, Rumford
10 weeks ago by dchas
Four teenage boys — two from Livermore Falls and two from Rumford — are charged with setting off six soda bottle bombs and igniting two fires in their respective towns over the weekend, officials said Monday.
The State Fire Marshal's Office charged the Livermore Falls boys, ages 14 and 15, with criminal use of explosives. They are accused of making six devices that blew up in the Baldwin, Church, Pleasant, Knapp and Green streets area, Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a statement.
During the investigation, the boys were identified and came to the Livermore Falls Police Station with their parents Sunday for questioning, state investigator Ken MacMaster of the Office of the State Fire Marshall said Monday.
The pair admitted to making the bombs, he said. The contents in the bottles created a chemical reaction that caused them to explode, MacMaster said. No one was hurt and no property was damaged but the potential was there, because they added BB's, he said.

Acid bombs explode in Longmont, police hunt makers
11 weeks ago by dchas
The explosion of two acid bombs Saturday night in Longmont — with no injuries — have police on a hunt to catch the bomb makers before someone gets hurt.
Acid bombs generally consist of a plastic bottle filled with an acid and a reacting base. They don't rely on a timer or fuse to explode, but usually the bomber has time to run before the chemical reaction results in explosion.
"It is a felony crime to us," said Longmont Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur. "But more important this is extremely dangerous because they are so unpredictable you can't predict when they will go off. It could be while you're holding it or placing or someone could see it and pick it up."
"I'm guessing it is a couple of school age kids who read about it or heard about it and decided to make it," Satur said.
The first bomb exploded on the porch of a home in the 1600 block of Green Place at about 10:15 p.m. Another, placed under a vehicle parked in the 700 block of Elliot Street blew up about one-half hour later.

Police said Monday they believe the man contacted a hardened substance with a chisel, causing it to explode. The exact chemical makeup of that substance remains under investigation.

Experts: Lafayette bomb "easy to make," links to suspect likely
january 2012 by dchas
LAFAYETTE, Colo. -- A Lafayette woman is still in the hospital recovering from severe injuries after an explosive device detonated in her car on Saturday.
...
While police are not releasing much information about the investigation, explosive experts are weighing in on the danger of homemade explosives.
"Unfortunately, there are countless ways to make a bomb like this using any household chemical," said Dr. April Hill, with Metropolitan State College of Denver. Dr. Hill specializes in chemical improvised explosive devices, and believes whatever injured Allyson Stone and her husband Chris was a chemical explosion.
According to Dr. Hill, whoever placed the explosive device inside a paper bag that exploded the Stone's car could have made it from any number of instructions available online.
"If you mix the right chemicals in, say, a pop bottle, then the pressure builds," Dr. Hill says. "You're building up heat and gases, so then when the bottle explodes you have hot gases and hot liquids being spewed throughout. That's probably what caused the burns."
ATF Agent Brad Beyersdorf says the device is fairly rare.
"It is something that AFT does investigate on occasion," Beyersdorf says, "but just there's not been a time in the recent past that I could say that has occurred in the Denver area."

The San Luis Obispo County Hazmat team was sent to investigate and clean up after someone detonated a device commonly called a chemical bomb shortly before 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Atascadero High School.
Atascadero police said the explosion of the small chemical bomb did not cause any permanent damage and no one was hurt. However, it is a felony to make and detonate one of these devices.
The bomb maker apparently combined household cleaning supplies in a plastic bottle and sealed it causing a chemical reaction that made the plastic bottle expand and eventually explode, a process frequently taught in high school science classes.

The teens were charged with reckless endangerment and unlawfully possessing noxious material. They were released on appearance tickets.
Authorities say the bottle contained ingredients which when mixed can cause a chemical reaction resulting in an explosion.

Friend sheds light on St. Joseph County man's pyrotechnic background
october 2011 by dchas
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY – Loud explosions echoed through the northern part of St. Joseph County Thursday afternoon as bomb squad and hazardous materials technicians worked to burn off materials found in a Currant Road home.
Experts felt it was safer to dig trenches and do so on the 5-acre property owned by 65-year-old Stan Warren, rather than remove the chemicals and risk an explosion while transporting them somewhere else, said St. Joseph County police Sgt. Matt Blank.
They also brought in a chemist to help identify some of the products that weren’t marked. Blank said that took less time and allowed technicians to get rid of the materials more quickly than if they were taken off site.
Police found Warren dead behind his home Wednesday morning. He built an explosive device to take his own life, Blank said.
Authorities closed a portion of the 55,000 block of Currant Road more than 24 hours after finding about 3,000 pounds of explosive materials from Warren’s basement and a storage shed behind the home.

Device exploded at Landmark college
october 2011 by dchas
PUTNEY -- Police are investigating the detonation of an explosive device at the Landmark College campus.
On Friday, at about 7:40 p.m., members of the Vermont State Police and the Putney Fire Department responded to the college after the school’s security heard the blast across the campus. The explosion was described as "loud as a 12-gauge shotgun blast," according to campus security.
The device used was described as an "over-pressure device" which in this case was a plastic container that contained at least two substances that when mixed caused a chemical reaction producing a gas inside the closed container, Sgt. Mike Sorensen said.
"When the pressure became too great the container ruptured and the explosion resulted," he said.
No one was injured as a result of the incident, Sorensen said.

Explosive PETN used in Delhi high court blast
september 2011 by dchas
reliminary investigations into the Delhi high court bomb blast have indicated that a nitrate-based explosive was used.
"A small crater has been created where the explosive was placed. Examination of the blast site indicates that a nitrate based explosive with traces of PETN or Pentaerythritol Trinitrate was used," said U K Bansal, special secretary home department. Bansal also added that PETN is an "explosive of choice".
Apparently, PETN is used for heart ailments to smoothen the blood flow. The chemical which was discovered by German forces in World War-I has become a favourite terror toy in the hands of organisations like Lashker-e-Tayiba, Hizbul Mujahideen [ Images ] and Al-Qaeda [ Images ] which have used it globally to cause mayhem.
However, traces of PETN in the explosive used has come as a huge surprise to forensic experts. "There are very few cases in the country where the use of PETN has been detected. This explosive is not very easily available," said a former director of forensic laboratory in Maharashtra [ Images ].

Booby trap disrupts classes in Stella Maris Academy of Davao
september 2011 by dchas
DAVAO CITY -- Classes for both secondary and high school levels at a public school here were temporarily suspended after smoke came out of a boys' toilet inside the campus Thursday afternoon.
Farther north, a real bomb exploded inside a public school campus, although no one was hurt since it was too early for classes when the explosion happened.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
Inspector Jay Francia, of the special tactical platoon of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) special anti-terrorist unit (Satu), told reporters at the City Council on Thursday that they were called in on suspicion that an improvised explosive device (IED) was found at the ground floor of the Stella Maris Academy of Davao high school department around 1 p.m. Thursday.
Classes were suspended while the bomb squad scoured the school's vicinity.
The smoke was traced to a toilet bowl where a half-burned six-inch high mug was found.
Initial investigation indicated that the mug contained chemicals that could cause a burning of sorts when mixed with water. A meter-long yarn was also found in the toilet.
Francia said that apparently, the mug was set up to fall into the bowl when the door is opened.

Chemical bomb burns postal worker from Saylorsburg
august 2011 by dchas
Eleven-year postal veteran Patricia Matolyak of Saylorsburg suffered burns last week after an exploded chemical bomb splashed her as she opened a mailbox.
Matolyak, a carrier out of the Wind Gap office, was driving her regular route at about 10 a.m. when she arrived at a residence in the 300 block of Sexton Road in Bushkill Township, Northampton County, on Thursday. The home had a medium-sized post-mounted black mailbox. She had a bundled stack of mail in her hand. The lid stuck when she tried opening the box.
"That happens sometimes because mailboxes get sticky," she said. "I pulled on it pretty hard. When I did, the liquid splashed out on my hands, arms, face, chest and head."
At first Matolyak thought the liquid was water.
"My gut reaction was to close the mailbox, but when I did, it came back open and all the liquid came into the lid of the mailbox and started bubbling."
Inside the mailbox was a 16.9-ounce water bottle, foil and the liquid, which was suspected to be drain cleaner. The bomb had exploded earlier, and the liquid was pooled in the box and came out when the door was opened.

GIRARD - A 16-year-old Girard boy was taken by helicopter to the Burn Center at Akron Children's Hospital Wednesday following what officials said was an attempt to create a low-yield bomb in his backyard.
Dylan Herrick of 119 Crumlin Ave. suffered burns to his face and eyes when a homemade chemical bomb he was constructing exploded in his hands at around 2:15 p.m., according to a police report. When officers arrived, he was sitting on a neighbor's porch holding a towel over his face and complaining he could not see. An ambulance took Herrick to St. Elizabeth Health Center and he was later flown to Akron.
Police said the boy likely will face a felony charge alleging illegal manufacture of explosives.
The boy's brother, Dan, told police that Dylan had said he was going outside to make a ''works'' bomb, created by mixing chemicals with aluminum in a plastic bottle. When combined with certain chemicals, aluminum will create a chemical reaction that results in an explosion.

Police: Bottle bombs found in unfilled city pool
june 2011 by dchas
MANCHESTER — Police Tuesday night used a BB gun to “neutralize” three of four bottle bombs found on the floor of the unfilled Hunt Pool, 285 Maple St.
Officers responded to the pool at about 8 p.m. to meet with Manchester Fire Hazmat, which had discovered the four bombs.
One of the two-liter plastic bottles had already exploded, but three were still intact. Firefighters said the bottles contained battery acid and a piece of tinfoil, a combination that results in a chemical reaction that causes pressure to build and the capped bottles to explode, spewing acid.
After the bottle bombs were neutralized, the fire department hazmat unit retrieved the bottles and cleaned up the spill and debris.

'Suspicious materials' found in MIT dorm in Cambridge deemed harmless
june 2011 by dchas
Cambridge —
Two MIT dormitories were evacuated at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, after private contractors working on the third floor on the New House dorm on Memorial Drive found two pipes, both filled with ball bearings and a granular material, laid out next to a tub of chemicals.
The surrounding area was cordoned off, but a six-and-a-half hour investigation that involved the MIT Police Department, Cambridge Fire Department, Boston State Police, the Cambridge Bomb Squad, FBI and ATF agents, a HAZMAT unit, high-powered water cannons and sniffer dogs, ended when officials declared that the potential bomb was a “collection of harmless materials.”
Police department spokesman Dan Riviello said that an abundance of “suspicious material” warranted a full response.
Nine students were evacuated from New House, and the adjacent Next House facility was cleared after 11 a.m. Police blocked off a small surrounding area, which incorporated Amherst Alley and a neighboring car park.
Around 12 p.m. the Boston Police Department’s Twitter page had referred to the package as a “possible pipe bomb.”

Livingston teacher re-arrested after police find nitroglycerin in class
may 2011 by dchas
LIVINGSTON -- Police arrested high school teacher Japhia Smith Huhndorf on Wednesday afternoon after officials say they found a vial of nitroglycerin in her chemistry lab at Livingston High School — her second arrest this week.
Police said they found about 4 milliliters of the explosive compound during an investigation, which sparked a schoolwide evacuation Wednesday. The 34-year-old chemistry teacher was arrested at her Atwater home the same day.
"We brought her here to the high school, and with her cooperation we were able to locate a small amount of nitroglycerin explosives," said Livingston police Sgt. Ray Fong.
Nitroglycerin can be used to make explosives and isn't normally found in a chemistry lab, according to Fong.
"That's an explosive substance, very volatile. Not really something you want to leave around," he explained. "It can go off with very little provocation."
The Merced Police Department Bomb Squad destroyed the nitroglycerin Wednesday afternoon, according to Fong. He said detectives are questioning Huhndorf about why she had the substance in her classroom.

Homemade device explodes in Napa mailbox
may 2011 by dchas
A homemade device exploded early Saturday morning inside a residential mailbox in northwest Napa, Napa Fire officials said.
A resident called at 1:21 a.m. from the 3900 block of Stover Street to report a loud explosion, Napa Fire Capt. Mike Dombrowski said. The resident saw smoke coming from the mailbox, which was moderately damaged, he said.
There were no injuries, he said. Fire crews cleared the scene at 2 a.m., he said.
A Napa Fire hazardous material technician was called out to investigate the chemical used in the incident, he said. It appears the explosive device in the mailbox was a large water bottle filled with pieces of aluminum foil and a Drano-type liquid, Dombrowski said.
Teenagers in other communities have been known to build them, he said, referring to the homemade device. “We are aware that this is becoming a problem,” he said.

WHDH-TV - Mendon police investigate exploding bottles
may 2011 by dchas
MENDON, Mass. -- Police in Mendon are investigating after two buildings were targeted by someone throwing bottles full of an explosive liquid.
One of the bottle bombs was thrown out in front of a home on Park Street Friday evening. The family heard a loud explosion and then found remains of the bottle and chemicals on their driveway.
“They heard a large explosion outside in the front yard,” Detective David Kurzcy said. “They didn’t really think much of it for some reason -- ended up going to bed, didn’t call us. The next morning they were out washing their car, went to the end of the driveway, noticed the device.”
Around the same time, another bottle filled with chemicals was thrown in front of Alicante Mediterranean Grille where employees were wrapping things up for the night. One of their servers had a very close call.
“It was real warm chemical, little pellets inside of it, so I...curiosity trying to figure out what it was, until Joe said you probably should get rid of that,” Darren Johnson said. “We threw it into the trash receptacle over here, I took probably two steps away from there, and it blew up, so it was pretty close to being in my hand at the time that it had blown up.”

Palm Beach County teens used household cleaner to make bombs
april 2011 by dchas
Three weeks ago, Tequesta Police Lt. Jason Turner heard in a class taught by a New York state fire marshal that young people are now far more likely to commit suicide by inhaling a mix of common household chemicals.
On April 9, three teenagers used those same chemicals to create bombs that exploded in local neighborhoods, police say.
After learning that the teens discovered how to create the bombs on YouTube, and knowing how easy it is to buy household chemicals, Turner is concerned that bomb-making could morph into an even more serious problem in Palm Beach County.
“I looked at the chemical compound they’re using,” Turner said. “And it just so happened these acid bombs they were making were the same type of chemical that’s being used in a lot of these chemical suicides around the nation and internationally.”
The United States ranks second in the world in the number of chemical suicides, trailing only Japan.

Third mailbox bomb found in Shreveport - KSLA News 12 Shreveport, Louisiana |
april 2011 by dchas
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Shreveport Fire investigators want to warn people to be careful when checking your mail. They have found 3 bombs in mailboxes since Saturday. The Fire Department says this type of explosive is usually in a bottle, possibly a soft drink bottle, with a chemical odor.
They've arrested 2 teenaged boys for allegedly making the devices. They think the boys found how to make them online. If convicted, the boys could face up to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
So far, only one man suffered minor injuries, but they say it could have been a lot worse.
"Very dangerous. Very volatile. These are basically household chemicals that are being mixed together, but they can have a very volatile reaction," said Chief Scott Wolverton with the Shreveport Fire Department.

Hazmat scene near ODU | WAVY.com | Norfolk
november 2010 by dchas
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Four people were arrested in connection with the discovery of suspected bottle bombs in the backyard of an apartment complex in the 1500 block of 42nd Street near Old Dominion University in Norfolk.
Leah Holloway, an ODU student living next door to the apartment complex where the four suspects live said she was the one who called 911.
"They were mixing bleach, Drano, and gasoline and trying to light it on fire. They were mixing chemicals for two hours. They actually left and came back to get more chemicals because the first set of chemicals did not work," Holloway said.
Fire officials arrived on scene just after 4 p.m. to find what they said appeared to be bottle bombs in the back of the apartment complex.
The apartment building and a house next door were evacuated and part of Powhatan Avenue was blocked.
The bomb squad brought in a robot which fired shots at the bottles to render them safe and then investigators began examining the evidence to determine exactly what types of chemicals were used.
