Theft of anhydrous ammonia wanes with meth makers' shift to one-pot method
5 weeks ago by dchas
Northern Vanderburgh County farmer Randy Kron nervously grinned while explaining his plan this year to grow crops on about 2,000 acres across Southwestern Indiana.
Kron said he took a gamble by starting the growing season early. This year's warmer temps and sunnier skies put him roughly a month ahead of schedule to plant corn. By Easter weekend, the majority of his crop was planted and the anhydrous ammonia applied.
Kron said hopefully his luck with temperatures will be the same as keeping the ammonia out of the hands of eager old-fashioned methamphetamine cooks.
Four years ago, the white cylindrical wagons he uses to apply the ammonia were a target for meth cooks. But this year, Kron said ,he's had more time to worry about the weather. Law enforcement and anhydrous co-op managers around the region said the same.
Today, more meth cooks continue to opt for the more portable one-pot method than risk stealing the ammonia from area farms. And with a new additive to help early planting tainting supplies, anhydrous thefts have been nonexistent. But like the weather, members of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Drug Task Force said it may be too early to determine the impact.
Over the past two years, the one-pot meth lab surpassed the larger and more confusing anhydrous version. Meth cooks now use a first-aid cold pack to create the ammonia they once stole. The new method brought the drug manufacture into urban areas such as Evansville, where there are more places to hide and supplies are available at most local drugstores.
"The one-pot method is more user-friendly, so more people tend to use it," said Brock Hensley, an Evansville Police Department detective assigned to the Drug Task Force. "But it may be too early to tell."

Man suffers 'significant' chemical burns in farming accident

McLEAN — A man suffered chemical burns Friday night when he was splashed with anhydrous ammonia near McLean, authorities said.
The man was filling tanks with the fertilizer about 7 p.m. at J & A Farms, 9641 E. 200 North Road, when he was sprayed by a leaky valve, said Mount Hope-Funks Grove Fire Chief Eric Fulk. The man suffered “significant burns” and was taken to Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Normal, Fulk said.
The man’s name was not released, and his medical condition was not available.
The nitrogen-rich fertilizer forms a caustic alkali when it comes in contact with water, so it is especially dangerous to skin, eyes, lungs or other moist tissues.

Railroad car malfunction leads to ammonia leak in North Portland
january 2012 by dchas
An ammonia leak on a railroad car in the St. Johns neighborhood of North Portland prompted a hazmat response Wednesday morning.
Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) crews responded to the anhydrous ammonia leak, near 10627 N. Swift Court, a little after 10 a.m.
A hazmat team initially approached the rail car, but their monitoring equipment detected such high concentrations of ammonia that the levels on their equipment maxed out. They were forced to withdraw and get additional protective clothing and equipment.
Eventually, hazmat technicians were able to re-approach the rail car and stop the leak, which had been caused by a malfunctioning pressure relief valve, PF&R reports.

Anhydrous Ammonia Leak at Grand Chute Business
january 2012 by dchas
The Grand Chute Fire Department says an ammonia leak at a cold storage business Thursday afternoon didn't pose a danger to the public.
The fire department says anhydrous ammonia was leaking from a pipe in the engine room at Americold on West Nordale Drive, creating three feet of ice on the floor.
Officials say about 35 employees had to be evacuated from the building and several nearby streets were shut down.
We're told the Appleton Hazmat team made three separate trips into the building to close all of the valves on the three ammonia pipes.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Emergency crews responded to a North Portland industrial area near Pier Park on Wednesday after a smell of ammonia was reported in the air.
The incident was centered in the 10600 block of North Swift Court.
Portland Fire Bureau crews found the source of the smell - anhydrous ammonia that was leaking from a railroad tanker. A spokesperson said the tank was empty but there was residual amounts of ammonia making its way into the air, possibly through a crack.
"Our standards say that at 300 parts per million ammonia becomes an immediate danger to life and health," said Tommy Schroeder with Portland Fire & Rescue. "Our meters pegged at 200 parts per million."

Hazmat Incident Sends Garbage Collectors to Hospital
january 2012 by dchas
A hazardous materials incident in Redwood City Tuesday morning sent three Recology employees to the hospital and prompted the evacuation of several businesses, a city spokesman said.
Around 10 a.m., the Redwood City Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a hazardous materials spill in the 1500 block of Main Street, Redwood City spokesman Malcolm Smith said.
Firefighters from Redwood City, Belmont and Woodside responded, as did Redwood City police and the county hazardous materials team, Smith said.
Two Recology waste management garbage collectors had emptied a Dumpster into the garbage truck, Smith said. When they attempted to compress the materials with the truck, a white container burst, emitting a white fume, he said.
The two employees began feeling ill and vomiting. The Recology employees notified their supervisor, who called 911, Smith said.
Upon arriving at the scene, supervisor also began feeling ill, and all three were taken to a hospital, he said.
Four businesses on Main Street were evacuated and remained closed this afternoon while the hazardous materials team investigated the incident.
One of the chemicals has been identified as ammonia, and the hazardous materials team is continuing testing on the material in the back of the garbage truck, Smith said. Once the chemicals are determined, they will aim to neutralize them, he said.
A section of Main Street in downtown Redwood City remained closed to traffic between Chestnut Street and Pine Street Tuesday afternoon, and part of Pine Street was also closed.

Two people were severely injured while working at a vegetable packing shed when they were exposed to an anhydrous ammonia explosion at Yuma (AZ) Express Cooling. The explosion sent a shock wave from between two tanks, sending one man running out about ten feet in front of the shock wave and another behind him who was engulfed in the shock wave that, to a witness, picked him up off the ground for about five or six feet, until he finally hit the ground running again.
The plume of ammonia smoke was about 45 feet high. People who were evacuating a nearby building ran right into it when they exited. When the alarms started, people ran out all the exits, but they didn't know what they were getting into. The wind carried the wave toward the southeast where everybody was evacuating so they were actually running into the plume of ammonia. The first YFD units to arrive on scene found multiple victims with varied degrees of ammonia exposure. The most severe exposure victim was transported immediately to Yuma Regional Medical Center by a YFD Rescue truck.

DEEP: Ammonia, bleach likely cause of fumes at Lawrence & Memorial
december 2011 by dchas
New London — The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the chemical reaction reported at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital this afternoon was likely the result of an ammonia and bleach mixture, according to hospital spokesman Michael O’Farrell.
A hazardous materials team and the city fire department responded to the call, but O’Farrell said no one was injured and no evacuation was necessary. Most of the personnel who responded to the scene left by about 2:40 p.m.
O’Farrell said workers were renovating a walk-in cooler and used bleach to try to clean up an odor under a layer of flooring in the work area. Once the bleach was applied, O’Farrell said a “haze” rose from the floor and the work crew alerted hospital staff, who in turn called the New London Fire Department.

Fire crews called to Orica plant after new leak
november 2011 by dchas
Three plumes of ammonia gas have leaked from the Orica chemical plant at Kooragang Island this afternoon - just hours after it was revealed the company would be prosecuted for a toxic leak in August at the same plant.
NSW Fire and Rescue said the gas was released in three blasts at 3.30pm.
Six fire units and Hazmat are on the scene.
No one has been injured or evacuated.
A spokesman for Fire and Rescue NSW said no chemicals had yet been detected by air quality monitors, while an Orica spokeswoman said the company was investigating the incident.
Earlier, the Environment Protection Authority announced that Orica would be prosecuted after hexavalent chromium belched into the air from the company's ammonium nitrate plant at Kooragang Island, near Newcastle, on August 8.

Firefighters warn Beach Street residents of chemical leak
november 2011 by dchas
DAYTONA BEACH -- An ammonia leak had firefighters going door to door in a North Beach Street neighborhood warning residents to stay indoors until officials determined there was no longer a hazard.
Fire Department spokesman, Lt. Larry Stoney said fire crews responded to a chemical hazard call just after 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Tour Ice plant, 645 N. Beach St.
As they arrived firefighters noticed a white vapor coming from the service entrance, Stoney said. Plant employees told emergency crews an 8-foot-high, 600-pound anhydrous ammonia tank used for making ice was leaking.
Fire crews entered the building and closed several tank valves to prevent further leaks. However, they determined the leak was coming from another source and isolated that area before the leak could be stopped.

Nuke Plant Resumes Operations After Ammonia Leak
november 2011 by dchas
IRVINE, Calif. Officials at a Southern California nuclear plant searched for the cause of a non-radioactive ammonia leak that triggered an unusual emergency alert and precautionary evacuation of some workers before it was contained.
Officials stressed there was never any danger to the public.
Workers stopped the leak by 5 p.m. Tuesday, about two hours after it was detected in a storage tank in the water purification system of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station's Unit 3, said Todd Adler, the plant's engineering manager.
The emergency alert was required because fumes could prevent access to certain areas of the plant, Adler told reporters at a media information center in Irvine, Calif.
The alert, the second lowest of four federal classifications for emergencies at commercial nuclear power plants, was canceled at 6:07 p.m. and evacuated workers were allowed to return.
"It's a chemical spill that could happen at any industrial facility," Adler said.
The leak was in the non-nuclear section of the plant, which is operated by Southern California Edison. No radioactive material was released, no injuries were reported and there was no danger to the public, the company said.
Approximately 25 gallons of leaked ammonia were collected in a basin underneath the tank that was designed for that purpose, Edison spokeswoman Lauren Bartlett said.

Massive fire at chemical plant near Dallas
october 2011 by dchas
WAXAHACHIE, Texas - A fire at a chemical plant south of Dallas shot massive plumes of black smoke and bright orange flames into the sky Monday, forcing schoolchildren and residents to evacuate or take cover indoors to avoid possible exposure to dangerous gases.
Flames engulfed what appeared to be several areas of a large complex at a Magnablend, Inc., facility in Waxahachie, about 30 miles south of Dallas. Images from local television stations showed the fast-moving blaze consuming a fire truck at the scene and flames nearing railroad tracks alongside the property.
The fire started just before 11 a.m., reports CBS Station KTVT.
According to the company website, Magnablend houses ammonia and other chemicals for industries ranging from oil fields to industrial cleaning, at the facility located just off of Highway 287 near Interstate-35E.
Magnablend Environmental Health and Safety Manager Donald Golden said the fire spread very rapidly. "Fire departments were on the scene pretty quickly, but it [the blaze] just seemed to take off and accelerate pretty quickly," he told KTVT,
Golden told WFAA-TV that the 25 to 30 employees who were inside a warehouse at the plant evacuated safely when the fire broke out.

Staff flee Peterborough factory chemical spillage
august 2011 by dchas
A POTENTIALLY lethal chemical spill injured two workers at a factory yesterday prompting an evacuation and a massive response from emergency services.
Staff at Omega Foundry Machinery Ltd, in Stapledon Road, Orton Southgate, were forced to flee their building when a chemical, originally thought to be ammonia, oozed out of a broken pipe at about 11.30am yesterday.
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue mobilized its specialist hazardous materials (hazmat) crews from St Neots as well as two other engines and a heavy rescue vehicle, with about 20 firefighters on the scene.
Two workers, who have not been named, were treated at the scene by paramedics for minor inhalation of fumes.
The hazmat team initially believed they were dealing with 50 litres of ammonia, but it was later confirmed to be about 10 litres and thought to be triethylamine.
The chemical is similar to ammonia and has a strong fishy odour which could be smelled on the industrial estate.

Holly Hill Firefighter becomes ill after chemical splashes on him
august 2011 by dchas
ORMOND BEACH -- A Holly Hill firefighter assisting Ormond Beach firefighters at a fire at a self-storage business Sunday got sick after some kind of chemical splashed on him, a fire official said.
The firefighter was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center by EVAC ambulance, said Battalion Chief David King of Ormond Beach.
...
Firefighters were called to Simply Self Storage at 610 S. Yonge St. at 5:42 p.m. Sunday to reports of white smoke coming out of three or four storage units. Holly Hill firefighters also responded to assist, King said.
Firefighters opened the unit and located a 35-gallon drum smoking. When water was put on it, the chemical, which King said was some kind of ammonia product used to bleach hair, splashed on Kimmy's arm. Twenty minutes later, he started having respiratory difficulty and started vomiting, King said.

Ammonia leaks onto roof of North Side Foods in Arnold
july 2011 by dchas
Hazardous materials crews descended on Arnold on Saturday afternoon when ammonia began leaking onto the roof of North Side Foods along Rivers Edge Drive.
John Tedorski, Arnold's director of emergency management, said two cooling towers used to maintain the pressure inside an ammonia storage tank lost power.
The rising temperature caused the pressure to climb from a stable 85 pounds per square inch to nearly 125 ppi.
The excessive pressure caused a valve to blow about 1:30 p.m. and a small amount of ammonia leaked outside onto the sausage packing company's roof, Tedorski said.
The building was evacuated but no one was injured, Tedorski said.

An anhydrous ammonia leak at the J.R. Simplot plant in Grand Forks prompted the evacuation of a compressor room and surrounding businesses shortly before noon today, the fire department said.
About 45 people were working in the compressor room when a valve started leaking, Grand Forks Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Sandry said.
Because of high winds, authorities evacuated nearby businesses Hebron Brick and Strata Corporation in addition to evacuating the compressor room.
“Anytime you’re dealing with anhydrous (ammonia), you certainly have the opportunity it could be serious," Sandry said.
Ammonia exposure can cause burning of the eyes, nose and throat or, at high levels, death, according to the North Dakota Department of Health.

A stretch of Highway 83 was closed down Monday near Stapleton for an ammonia spill south of the small sand hills community. Stapleton was also evacuated because of possible health concerns.
"It was at the Logan County Coop, just north of the Highway 83 and 92 junction," Captain Jeff Hankla said. "They have four large ammonia tanks. There is one main pipe that feeds all four of them and the pop off valve ruptured, for an unknown reason. The personnel that worked there shut off all the valves, but they had one valve fail. So all that ammonia was being released into the air."
Emergency personnel from North Platte were called at approximately 9:30 a.m., to assist with cleaning up the spill and to assist in fixing the valve. Hankla said the convenience store and coop were evacuated, and because of prevailing winds, homes were evacuated to the northeast of the station, including Stapleton. It also shut down portions of Highway 83 and Highway 92 for about four hours.

Fire raged in the small town of Blakesburg Friday Morning.
It all started about 8:30 a.m. after a truck driver was loading or unloading fuel. All of the sudden his vehicle burst into flames.
Fire fighters across four counties responded to the blaze. Smoke could be seen miles down the road as the tanker carrying diesel fuel and gasoline sent fireballs into the sky.
“We started putting water on it and then the fire got pretty good sized and we knew we were probably going to lose the tank itself,” said Ottumwa fire chief Tony Miller.
As if the fire wasn’t bad enough, other tanks just feet away held flammable fuel that could explode.
“We had some gasoline and diesel tanks just to the right of the tanker that had exploded. We had anhydrous ammonia nurse tanks to the left of it and we had the fire right in the middle of it.”

Ammonia Leak Near Dairy Prompts 'Shelter-In-Place' · OPB News

People living near the Alpenrose Dairy in Southwest Portland were asked to stay indoors Wednesday, following the release of ammonia gas.
Reverse 911 calls were sent out to local residents to tell them to shut their windows and doors and turn off air conditioners. The idea was to stop outside air from being drawn in.
Paul Corah of the Portland Fire Bureau, said while there was a smell of ammonia when authorities first arrived, by the time hazardous materials teams sampled the air inside, it was only at 21 parts per million of ammonia.
"Hazmat teams just got inside and did a sample of the air inside the plant. And it's reading about 21 parts per million of Ammonia. You can actually start smelling ammonia at about 17 parts per million. And any type of health risks start up at about 300 parts per million. So it's pretty low right now. It's a good sign," Corah said.

Chatham-Kent police, fire and the Ministry of Environment were called Saturday evening shortly after 8 p.m. after an anhydrous ammonia leak at a farm on Brush Line near Mull Road.
Insp. George Flikweert, of the Chatham-Kent Police Service, said a farmer was applying the chemical to a field on a sloped ridge. He said the uneven ground caused a stabilizer bar securing the pressurized ammonia tank to break, shifting the tank and causing the supply line to rupture.
Approximately one metric tonne of the chemical was spewed into the atmosphere, he said.
"It's a chemical used in the crop fertilization process," Flikweert said.
He said while the ammonia dissipates rapidly, it's extremely dangerous.
