Cast Project : Cast - The Open Deployment Platform
june 2011 by davewongillies
Cast is a platform for deploying and managing applications. Think of Cast as your very own Platform as a Service that you can use in the cloud or even in your datacenter. Cast is flexible enough to integrate with existing deployment workflows, but powerful enough to be used as a standalone deployment platform.

Every work day Facebook is safely updated with hundreds of changes including bug fixes, new features, and product improvements. Given hundreds of engineers, thousands of changes every week and hundreds of millions of users we have worldwide, this task seems like it should be impossible. In this tech talk, Chuck Rossi will dig into the tools and processes built by our Release Engineering team that make it possible to push daily updates to the site.

lg/murder - GitHub
december 2010 by davewongillies
Murder is a method of using Bittorrent to distribute files to a large amount of servers within a production environment. This allows for scaleable and fast deploys in environments of hundreds to tens of thousands of servers where centralized distribution systems wouldn't otherwise function. A "Murder" is normally used to refer to a flock of crows, which in this case applies to a bunch of servers doing something.

10+ Deploys Per Day: Dev and Ops Cooperation at Flickr
september 2009 by davewongillies
Communications and cooperation between development and operations isn't optional, it's mandatory. Flickr takes the idea of "release early, release often" to an extreme - on a normal day there are 10 full deployments of the site to our servers. This session discusses why this rate of change works so well, and the culture and technology needed to make it possible.

Scripted (Kickstart) Vs Image Based Deployment for Linux Systems « michaeldehaan.net
august 2009 by davewongillies
This question comes up a lot when I’m talking about Linux Provisioning with people, and came up during a recent online conference event, so I decided to feed the commentary to Google and Fedora Planet. This is just my opinion, not my employer’s or anything like that, and there are always exceptions to the rule.

The Madstop » Golden Image or Foil Ball?
july 2009 by davewongillies
If someone tries to sell you a golden image, don’t buy it - instead choose a tool you can use for every machine in your organization, and push every configuration operation possible into that tool, rather than spreading tasks around to your provisioning, image management, and configuration management tools.

Clonezilla
june 2009 by davewongillies
Clonezilla, based on DRBL, Partition Image, ntfsclone, partclone, and udpcast, allows you to do bare metal backup and recovery. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (server edition). Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla SE is for massive deployment, it can clone many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously.
