SEO for Non-dicks - Matt Legend Gemmell
september 2011 by danesparza
The key thing to understand is that the rules of SEO aren’t magic or arbitrary. They’re based on the goals of a search engine, which is to find relevant results. Relevance implies genuineness, and genuineness implies trust. So, shockingly, you should try to make your site’s content trustworthy, genuine and relevant.

A List Apart: Articles: Banishing Your Inner Critic
september 2011 by danesparza
Why be concerned with your inner critic? In essence, an overactive inner critic acts as a deterrent between the seedlings of great ideas and the fruits of accomplishment. Don’t think you have an inner critic? Think again. The question is not if the troll is there, but rather how big, loud, and disarmingly influential and persuasive it is.

Same origin policy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
august 2011 by danesparza
In computing, the same origin policy is an important security concept for a number of browser-side programming languages, such as JavaScript. The policy permits scripts running on pages originating from the same site to access each other's methods and properties with no specific restrictions, but prevents access to most methods and properties across pages on different sites.[1]

Five Minutes a Day for Fresh-Baked Bread
august 2010 by danesparza
The Secret: Keep Dough Refrigerated. It is easy to have fresh bread whenever you want it with only five minutes a day of active effort. Just mix the dough and let it sit for two hours. No kneading needed! Then shape and bake a loaf, and refrigerate the rest to use over the next couple weeks. Yes, weeks! The Master Recipe (below) makes enough dough for many loaves. When you want fresh-baked crusty bread, take some dough, shape it into a loaf, let it rise for about 20 minutes, then bake. Your house will smell like a bakery, and your family and friends will love you for it.

Sending JSON to an ASP.NET MVC Action Method Argument
june 2010 by danesparza
Javier “G Money” Lozano, one of the good folks involved with C4MVC, recently wrote a blog post on posting JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) encoded data to an MVC controller action. In his post, he describes an interesting approach of using a custom model binder to bind sent JSON data to an argument of an action method. Unfortunately, his sample left out the custom model binder and only demonstrates how to retrieve JSON data sent from a controller action, not how to send the JSON to the action method. Honest mistake. :)

SEOmoz | Overcome the Google Analytics Learning Curve in 20 Minutes

As recently as a month ago I was a victim of a state of mind I call Analytics Dismissal Disorder. This mindset is common after hearing about the importance of analytics, installing the tracking code and then getting overwhelmed by all of the graphs and scary numbers. When I suffered from analytics dismissal disorder (which my doctors called A.D.D. for short), I knew Google Analytics was important but avoided the extra effort necessary to learn how to get the most out of the software. This post explains what I needed to learn to get over this.

A List Apart: Articles: Printing a Book with CSS: Boom!
may 2010 by danesparza
HTML and CSS, two of our favorite acronyms, are normally associated with web pages. And deservedly so: HTML is the dominant document format on the web and CSS is used to style most HTML pages. But, are they suitable for off-screen use? Can CSS be used for serious print jobs? To find out, we decided to take the ultimate challenge: to produce the next edition of our book directly from HTML and CSS files. In this article we sketch our solution and quote from the style sheet used. Towards the end we describe the book microformat (boom!) we developed in the process.

12 Indirect Job Interview Questions & What They Really Reveal
march 2010 by danesparza
The interview is a classic point of stress for most job seekers, and with good cause. Many firms like asking indirect questions that make it hard to judge what information they're really fishing looking for. Of course, interviewers don't want anyone to know the motivation behind their method of questioning, or else potential job candidates could easily game the system. For this reason, most firms ask slightly different questions and have their own method of interviewing. Today, we explore twelve common indirect questions that employers often ask and the motivation behind them.

InfoQ: Kanban Applied to Software Development: from Agile to Lean
march 2010 by danesparza
A Kanban1 is a physical card used in Toyota Production System (TPS) to support non-centralized "pull" production control. It has spread to the manufacturing industry all over the world as a tool of Lean Manufacturing. Now in Agile software development the visualization of projects, such as posting task cards on a wall, is a commonly seen practice, which is sometimes called "Software Kanban", or "Task Kanban". Now we even see some product maintenance teams utilizing Kanban systems in a waterfall-like process model. So what is Kanban? Why is it used in the context of software development?

Using HTTP Compression for Faster Downloads (IIS 6.0)
august 2009 by danesparza
If your Web sites use large amounts of bandwidth or if you want to use bandwidth more effectively, consider enabling HTTP compression, which provides faster transmission times between IIS and compression-enabled browsers regardless of whether your content is served from local storage or a UNC resource. There are a few services out there that serve up screenshots of any webpage for you to display on your website. One popular one is Kwiboo; this is the one that DotNetKicks uses. For some time now I've wondered what the easiest way to do this in .NET was, and today I stumbled upon the undocumented WebBrowser.DrawToBitmap method that makes this extremely easy to do.

Getting Things Done When You're Only a Grunt - Joel on Software
may 2009 by danesparza
It can be frustrating when you're working in an organization that scores low on The Joel Test. No matter how good your code is, your coworkers write such bad code that you're embarassed to be associated with the project. Or management is making bad decisions about what code to write, so you're forced to waste your talent debugging the AS/400 version of a retirement-planning game for kids.

Better Living Through Homemade Yogurt | GOOD
may 2009 by danesparza
Here are the basics of rolling your own yogurt the lazy Xeni way. First, choose your starter culture. You can order this online, get it from a fellow slow foodie obsessive, or just do it slacker-style, like me: Buy a small single-serving container of plain yogurt at the corner bodega. Any brand with live Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus cultures will work ($.99 worth of the ubiquitous Dannon does just fine). The instructions that follow are for homemade yogurt with other yogurt as a starter.

Using P4Merge with Team Foundation Server // zobie's blog
may 2009 by danesparza
I’ve found that the best way to deal with merging is to avoid it completely! Unfortunately that is rarely realistic. So, assuming you don’t want to take any radical measures to completely avoid merging in TFS, you should at least use the best tools available. My favorite merge tool is the freely available (and cross-platform) P4Merge.

A List Apart: Articles: In Defense of Eye Candy
april 2009 by danesparza
We’ve all seen arguments in the design community that dismiss the role of beauty in visual interfaces, insisting that good designers base their choices strictly on matters of branding or basic design principles. Lost in these discussions is an understanding of the powerful role aesthetics play in shaping how we come to know, feel, and respond.

The painful truth about trainers: Are expensive running shoes a waste of money? | Mail Online
april 2009 by danesparza
Thrust enhancers, roll bars, microchips...the $20 billion running - shoe industry wants us to believe that the latest technologies will cushion every stride. Yet in this extract from his controversial new book, Christopher McDougall claims that injury rates for runners are actually on the rise, that everything we've been told about running shoes is wrong - and that it might even be better to go barefoot...

Yes, Virginia, there is a magenta - Ars Technica
february 2009 by danesparza
There is a nasty rumor making its way around the interconnected series of tubes we call the Internet. The rumor was sparked by an article on The Neurostimulation Technology Portal by Liz Elliott entitled "Magenta Ain't A Colour," which has since had people exclaiming, "Fact: Magenta isn't a color," or, "Magenta is a lie." The truth is a little more complicated than that, but I assure you that magenta is not a lie—or at least not any more a lie than any other color.
