“let’s pretend social interactions happen without social context” « Jadehawk's Blog
And nevermind that this whole scenario ignores the existence of socially inept women, since it puts the burden of clear communication on them (notice how it’s the women who have to say “no” as bluntly as possible, socialization and possible punishment be damned, but the socially awkward dudes are still allowed to operate within the subtleties of basic human interaction).

Lovely rant: "Then they get really serious: as artists of vision and integrity, they cannot but depict women solely as toilet receptacles because 1) that has been the “historical reality” across cultures and eras and 2) men have rape genes and/or rape brain modules that arose from natural selection to ensure that dominant males spread their mighty seed as widely as possible. Are we cognitively impaired functionally illiterate feminazis daring to deny (ominous pause) SCIENCE?!"

Literary Revolution in the Supermarket Aisle: Genre Fiction Is Disruptive Technology | Entertainment | TIME.com
I’m beginning to wonder if something like that is happening in contemporary fiction. We expect literary revolutions to come from above, from the literary end of the spectrum — the difficult, the avant-garde, the high-end, the densely written. But I don’t think that’s what’s going on. Instead we’re getting a revolution from below, coming up from the supermarket aisles. Genre fiction is the technology that will disrupt the literary novel as we know it.

anthropologist: When Same-Sex Marriage Was a Christian Rite
Contrary to myth, Christianity's concept of marriage has not been set in stone since the days of Christ, but has constantly evolved as a concept and ritual. Prof. John Boswell, the late Chairman of Yale University’s history department, discovered that in addition to heterosexual marriage ceremonies in ancient Christian church liturgical documents, there were also ceremonies called the "Office of Same-Sex Union" (10th and 11th century), and the "Order for Uniting Two Men" (11th and 12th century).

Skin is wearing thin on HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ - The Washington Post
I can often tell by the sort of dress a female character is wearing whether she is likely to disrobe. (If it has buttons, they will come undone.) I marvel at the semi-medieval society’s standards for personal grooming, which seem to anticipate the Brazilian waxes of the late 20th and early 21st centuries: I call the pubic hair pattern so often seen on Westerosi women “the King’s Landing Strip.”

Jim C. Hines - Posing Like a Man
Earlier this year, I did what turned out to be my most popular blog post ever, in which I posed like women in various urban fantasy covers to try to point out some of the problematic aspects of said covers.

I’m certainly not the only one to talk about these issues. Tor.com did a post just last week: Hey Everyone - Stop Taking This Picture. As usually happens in these discussions, some people responded with, “What about romance covers?” and “Men are objectified too, you know!”

Well, sure. Men can absolutely be objectified too. But is it the same kind of objectification? Are we contorted into similarly painful, impractical, and improbable positions? Is the posing of men in book covers really equivalent to the posing of women?

There was, of course, only one way to find out…

The 'Girls Around Me' Problem Isn't Just About Data, but Sexism - Nathan Jurgenson - Technology - The Atlantic
Kashmir Hill makes this point when stating, " 'You're too public with your digital data, ladies,' may be the new 'your skirt was too short and you had it coming.' " By looking at information-flows as well as sexual politics, Hill paints a better picture of why the Girls Around Me app is "creepy"; and it is all a lot more complicated than "obvious."

Other people had different experiences, sometimes hugely different, depending on when they came into fandom, what fandom was their gateway, whether they were monofannish or not, whether they were into slash or not, whether they lurked or were active, etc. The only thing that would be mostly the same for everyone is that posts were made, distributed, and read via email."

The Feminist Agenda: Blast from the Past: Own your Space
We found that if you don’t alter your path when walking toward a man, a lot of men will almost run right into you, or bump their shoulder against yours, and then turn and give you this weird look. The weird looks you get are increased if you stand up straight with squared shoulders and take longer strides. I habitually walk this way now, and I continue to get puzzled looks by men who turn around after I pass them and watch me with an uncertain look.

bonspiel | On fandom, contingent narratives and reinterpretation
I agree with Lim and Butler that part of the thing that makes genre fiction and fanfic work is that readers ‘look through’ the piece to see the larger idea or emotional arc that was intended. Is there any difference between this and a transmedia project, or is it just a matter of degree and of framing?

Why I left Google - JW on Tech - Site Home - MSDN Blogs
Perhaps Google is right. Perhaps the future lies in learning as much about people’s personal lives as possible. Perhaps Google is a better judge of when I should call my mom and that my life would be better if I shopped that Nordstrom sale. Perhaps if they nag me enough about all that open time on my calendar I’ll work out more often. Perhaps if they offer an ad for a divorce lawyer because I am writing an email about my 14 year old son breaking up with his girlfriend I’ll appreciate that ad enough to end my own marriage. Or perhaps I’ll figure all this stuff out on my own.

The Other Austen
Rozema’s movie is most arresting in its evocations of sexuality. On this subject, many readers and viewers who are usually intelligent become stupid and priggish, as if it is indecent — indecent, mind you — to discover sexuality in Austen’s novels, and as if the sexuality that is clearly there cannot possibly be sexuality. Scores of viewers who gasp with pleasure at a glimpse of Colin Firth’s extratextual derriere in the A&E Pride and Prejudice denounce Rozema’s movie on the grounds that there’s no sex in Jane Austen, a conviction egregiously inapt with respect to Mansfield Park, which is suffused with frustrated, illicit, wayward, or polymorphous sexuality.

American ISPs to launch massive copyright spying scheme on July 12 | The Raw Story
Not everyone sees it as a positive: The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights advocacy group, argued that the “graduated response” scheme lacks transparency, and that copyright holders could wield the network operators like a blunt instrument in cases where their claims may not be entirely valid — which is the biggest problem with statutes codified by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Why I Won’t Do Business With Amazon | Jason Erik Lundberg
Just last week, Amazon pulled more than 4,000 books from its site in order to pressure the Independent Publishers Group, one of the USA’s largest book distributors, into renegotiating their contractual terms to move things more toward Amazon’s favor. The books by the publishers distributed by IPG are now delisted from the Kindle e-book store, and the situation remains unresolved at this point. In response, the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) are now redirecting all Amazon.com links on their site, and replacing them with links to IndieBound, Powells, and B&N;

BBC News - Google privacy changes 'in breach of EU law'
A poll of more than 2,000 people conducted by the group in conjunction with YouGov suggested 47% of Google users in the UK were not aware policy changes were taking place.

Only 12% of British Google users, Big Brother Watch said, had read the new agreement.

The group's director Nick Pickles said: "If people don't understand what is happening to their personal information, how can they make an informed choice about using a service?

"Google is putting advertisers' interests before user privacy and should not be rushing ahead before the public understand what the changes will mean."

Be careful not to leave out information for some people in your audience. For example, if you say "you can read it on the slide", you are probably excluding people who cannot see the slide.

This page helps you make your presentations, talks, meetings, and training accessible to all of your potential audience, including people with disabilities and others. Inclusive presentations have many benefits.

The proposal, championed by Viviane Reding, the EU justice commissioner, would force all companies to get explicit consent from customers to collect their data, explain how it will be used, and allow users to completely erase their information.

A Few Thoughts on Cryptographic Engineering: The Internet is broken: could we please fix it?
In late January of this year, Trustwave made a cryptic update to their CA policy. When people started asking about it, they responded with a carefully-worded post on the company blog. When you cut through the business-speak, here's what it says:

We sold the right to generate certificates -- on any domain name, regardless of whether it belongs to one of our clients or not -- and packed this magical capability into a box. We rented this box to a corporate client for the express purpose of running Man-in-the-Middle attacks to eavesdrop on their employees' TLS-secured connections. At no point did we stop to consider how damaging this kind of practice was, nor did we worry unduly about its potential impact on our business -- since quite frankly, we didn't believe it would have any.

Daily Dot | How copyright law became a weapon in YouTube spats
The process works well enough for music labels and movie studios with big legal departments. However, YouTubers have taken to abusing the DMCA request process to remove any material they don’t like—sometimes using falsified personal information so the claim can’t be traced back to them.

Last September, one person falsely claimed copyright over music videos by Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. It took hours for the videos to be restored. And that was an unusually fast response. It can normally take days or weeks for YouTube to restore a video—and that’s if the person who posted it responds with a counterclaim against the original DMCA request.

Nearly 8,000 YouTubers have signed a petition calling on Google to reform how it handles DMCA notices.
