Don’t Fear the Internet
february 2012 by coldbrain
"Are you a print designer, photographer, fine-artist, or general creative person? Do you have a shitty website that you slapped together yourself in Dreamweaver in that ONE web design class that you took in college? Do you not have a site at all because you’ve been waiting two years for your cousin to put it together for you? Well, we’re here to help. We know that you have little to no desire to do web design professionally, but that doesn’t mean that you want an ugly cookie-cutter site or to settle for one that hasn't been updated since Hackers was in theaters. Through short tutorial videos, you’ll learn how to take a basic wordpress blog and manipulate the css, html (and even some php!) to match your aesthetic. You’ll feel empowered rather than crippled by the internet and worst case scenario you’ll at least end up having a better idea of how professional web designers turn your design dreams into a reality on screen."

css3.bradshawenterprises.com/all/
january 2012 by coldbrain
First things first - these demos are showing of CSS transitions, transforms (2D and 3D) and animations. Currently (January 2012), 2D transforms are available in all current browsers including IE9, transitions are available in all browsers except Internet Explorer 9 and less, while 3D transforms are in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and IE10 and up. Animations are available in Safari, Chrome, Firefox 5+ and IE10. Most examples degrade nicely, so if you are using a legacy browser you can still use a site using these, you just won't get animation. 3D transforms generally don't degrade nicely, so be careful when using them.

Version control, also known as source control or revision control is an integral part of any development workflow. Why? It is essentially a communication tool, just like email or IM, but it works with code rather than human conversation.

How To Give Your Photos a Dark Processed Lomo Effect
december 2010 by coldbrain
Follow this step by step post processing guide to give your photos a dark lomo style effect with high contrast, blue tones and vignette burns. The effect is based on the popular lomographic technique and is similar to the processing effect used in many fashion shots and advertisement designs. Overall this effect does a great job of adding impact to a plain photography with cool colour casts and unusual saturation.

Grow Onions from Discarded Onion Bottoms
october 2010 by coldbrain
This Instructable outlines how to grow fresh onion plants from discarded onion bottoms that would otherwise be thrown in the trash. You can theoretically create an endless supply of onions without ever having to buy bulbs or seeds, and if you're as big of an onion lover in the kitchen as I am, you'll have a full bed of onions in no time.

Photoshop Puzzle - Photoshop Jigsaw Puzzle - Photoshop Puzzle Tutorial
october 2010 by coldbrain
In this Photoshop effects tutorial, we're going to look at how to easily create a Photoshop puzzle effect, allowing us to turn any photo into a jigsaw puzzle! Or at least, we'll be creating the illusion that the photo is made up of small puzzle pieces, although I suppose you could print the photo afterwards, cut around all the pieces with scissors and make an actual puzzle out of it, but as I like to say, why fumble around with reality when faking things in Photoshop is so much easier.

Keynotopia - Prototyping an interactive iPhone app in 10 mns | Keynotopia
september 2010 by coldbrain
Every day, we all get lots of good ideas. Most of us, unfortunately, don’t act on these ideas. We create high barriers to entry by imagining how much resources it requires, and how much we need to learn, in order to see it in action. If you know how to put together a prototype of your idea within one hour of getting it, your chances of moving forward are much higher than the ones who will sit down to do market research, write business plans, and hunt for investors. In fact, and this is based on personal experience, your chances of winning a client or receiving investment for your idea are much higher when you can express your ideas with a prototype that you can show along with your presentation. By using a simple, cheap and productive tool like Apple Keynote, you shrink the time required to create an interactive prototype to a matter of hours. And by using ready made prototyping assets, you even shrink that time to less than an hour.

The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide To AppleScript | Mac.AppStorm
july 2010 by coldbrain
AppleScript is a powerful scripting language that comes built-in to OS X. The principal use for AppleScript is the automation of tasks that are normally repetitious and time consuming. For instance, as a freelancer, I hate creating invoices every week for my various clients. To solve this problem I wrote an AppleScript that reads the hours that I log into iCal, creates an invoice in Microsoft Excel based on those hours, and emails the invoices to my clients. All with the click of a button!
