Sum: Tales from the Afterlives: Amazon.co.uk: David Eagleman: Books

Recommended by Stephen Fry. This little book has already caused quite a sensation in the publishing world, and for good reason too. And you can read why from the blurb on the back of the book. It did generate a variety of effects for me. Each short tale leaves a slightly different taste to the previous one. Some you will want to savour and allow the flavours to linger, whilst others may have no affect at all. Not only do you get such a wide variety of ideas and concepts, but the prose is delicious! Writers generally acknowledge that the short story is more of a challenge. These are not really short stories, more ideas for films or something, but the writing is superb.

Back story: Bonobos is an innovative, independent internet haberdashery. Dave Eisen berg once worked there, and he men tioned on Twit ter that he’d enjoyed Mr. Penumbra’s Twenty-Four-Hour Book Store. I’m a Bono bos fan and cus tomer, so I wrote back and said, well hey, how about a short story? We decided on a sim ple pants-for-prose arrange ment: Bono bos sent me a pair of their khakis; I wore those pants, and con tem plated their very essence, while com pos ing the wee slip of a story you’ll find below.

From a customer review: "I came across two of the stories among the material for an Open University course entitled "Start Writing Fiction" (my tutor was Ashley Stokes, the author of "Touching the Starfish"). None of the stories in this collection is longer than one page. Any-one who picks this book up and pronounces, "Any-one could have written this" is sadly mistaken. Like all good writing, every word and phrase is economically used and, despite their brevity, nearly all the stories have a recognisable build-up and conclusion. My favourite is "Hotel Waldhaus". It is the only work of prose fiction which I can honestly say I can recite in its entirety from memory, even when slightly drunk."
