Battery life is one of the most crucial specs when it comes to any electronic device, and iOS devices tout some of the best claims in the business. But what do you do when you’re not getting anywhere close to the advertised claims? Obviously usage patterns vary, but a growing number of people are noticing drastically reduced battery life when a device is in standby most of the day.

How does the iPhone 4S camera stack-up against other cameras?
A photo comparisons from all iPhone version cameras (First generation iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, the new iPhone 4S), a point & shoot camera, the Canon S95 ($500), and a professional dSLR, the Canon 5DMKII ($4000+) in two situations: 1. A macro setting to test detail and quality of the cameras; 2. A backlit skyline shot.

A Teacher's Desk Photo :: December 2010 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Lately, I hardly even open my laptop during the teaching day and mostly use it for heavy emailing and document creation before school and at the end of the day, and for reading, writing, and researching in the evening at home. So, my digital desktop (While always evolving, it’s more consistent than any physical desk space that I use.) has been less Mac OS desktop and more iOS desktop. I was only going to show the first page of apps on my iPod desktop, but as we sat at his December desk, Stephen encouraged me to show all of the pages. View large or full size.

63 weeks with Android. 1 week with the iPhone.
As much as I wanted an iPhone, buying one would have been an incredibly irrational decision. So I didn’t. Sure, I got to enjoy the iPhone’s greatness indirectly through iPod Touches and the iPad, but I stayed with Verizon for my phone needs and became an early adopter of Android when Motorola released its original Droid in the fall of 2009.<br />
About 63 weeks later, the iPhone finally came to Verizon. The rest is happy history.

Tablets
After a few seconds it struck me that what we'll end up calling these things is tablets. The only reason we even consider calling them "mobile devices" is that the iPhone preceded the iPad. If the iPad had come first, we wouldn't think of the iPhone as a phone; we'd think of it as a tablet small enough to hold up to your ear.

Rands In Repose: The Art of Not
Granted, one of the documented reasons for Instagram’s spartan feature set is the size of the team. As noted in the Quora article, the team allegedly spent a year working on the foundation for what became Instagram. But it was in an eight-week period that Instagram was designed, developed, and deployed. They could have waited another eight weeks and added a bunch more features, but they didn’t. I think each omission is interesting.

First Look: iOS 4.1 Review | Mobile | iOS Central | Macworld
As it has in previous years, Apple has quickly followed up a major iOS release with a point-one release that promises not only to fix outstanding bugs, but also to bring new and wondrous features to the company’s mobile operating system. And this time around, those enhancements are hardly inconsequential: among other things they include a brand new social network (Apple’s second to debut in the last week), slick new camera functionality, and a handful of smaller tweaks that you might not have noticed.

Keynotopia - Prototyping an interactive iPhone app in 10 mns | Keynotopia
Every day, we all get lots of good ideas. Most of us, unfortunately, don’t act on these ideas. We create high barriers to entry by imagining how much resources it requires, and how much we need to learn, in order to see it in action. If you know how to put together a prototype of your idea within one hour of getting it, your chances of moving forward are much higher than the ones who will sit down to do market research, write business plans, and hunt for investors. In fact, and this is based on personal experience, your chances of winning a client or receiving investment for your idea are much higher when you can express your ideas with a prototype that you can show along with your presentation. By using a simple, cheap and productive tool like Apple Keynote, you shrink the time required to create an interactive prototype to a matter of hours. And by using ready made prototyping assets, you even shrink that time to less than an hour.

The Savior of Condé Nast: Scott Dadich Is The New It Boy of the Mag World | The New York Observer
Someday, when they tell the story of how digital magazines saved Conde Nast, it will begin in San Francisco's Caffé Centro sometime in May 2009.

It was there that Wired creative director Scott Dadich asked Wired editor Chris Anderson to meet him to discuss the creation of a prototype for a new digital tablet. Mr. Dadich knew the iPhone screen was far too small to re-create the magazine experience, but it got him thinking about a Minority Report-like touchscreen that could work. Mr. Dadich took out a cocktail napkin and drew an illustration of what Wired could look like on a 13-inch tablet screen.

All the sizes of iOS app icons - Neven Mrgan's tumbl
All the iOS icons required: "Let’s say you’re working on an icon for an iOS app. The app is universal, so it should run on all iPhones (and iPod touches), and on the iPad. A Services Menu for iPhone - Release Candidate One
"Say you download a document from your company’s intranet to proofread. You look up a few words as you go, and you make some edits before sending it to your boss. If you’re anything like me, the task involves Safari, Pages, Dictionary, Finder, and iChat; with every application relying on the ability to take a file or a snippet of text from your current work context and send it elsewhere. On iPhone OS, where every app lives in a sandbox and dedicates itself to a single task, this kind of work isn’t a walk in the park. Copy and paste make things possible if you take the time to switch between apps, but the experience sucks, so developers add convenience features, web service integration, and custom URL schemes. Apple provides some great APIs for integrating with the system utilities, but they’re slow moving. There’s no standard MFTweetComposeViewController, and there probably never will be."

What the iPad is Missing (No, it’s not a Camera) | The FontFeed
Apple has made some puzzling decisions over the last few years that leave one wondering if they really care about typography as much as they did in the 1980s when the Mac launched the desktop publishing revolution. As recently as 2005, Steve Jobs made typography a central theme of his commencement address to Stanford grads, but his actions as the almighty head of Apple haven’t followed suit.
