Don’t Fear the Internet
"Are you a print designer, photographer, fine-artist, or general creative person? Do you have a shitty website that you slapped together yourself in Dreamweaver in that ONE web design class that you took in college? Do you not have a site at all because you’ve been waiting two years for your cousin to put it together for you? Well, we’re here to help. We know that you have little to no desire to do web design professionally, but that doesn’t mean that you want an ugly cookie-cutter site or to settle for one that hasn't been updated since Hackers was in theaters. Through short tutorial videos, you’ll learn how to take a basic wordpress blog and manipulate the css, html (and even some php!) to match your aesthetic. You’ll feel empowered rather than crippled by the internet and worst case scenario you’ll at least end up having a better idea of how professional web designers turn your design dreams into a reality on screen."

Tips on writing from Steven Johnson, ie., an actual successful writer | Oliver Burkeman
No matter how long I work as a journalist, I remain a total sucker for books that purport to teach you how to be a writer. Apparently, I believe I’m going to discover the killer secret — the brilliant time-management technique, the perfect piece of writing software, the exact brand of lever-arch file — that will destroy my procrastination and insecurities forever. There’s a problem, though, with books called things like How To Be An Amazingly Successful And Critically Acclaimed Writer In Ten Easy Steps: almost without exception, they’re written by people you’ve never heard of — people who don’t appear to have achieved much commercial or critical success at all. Perhaps you can spot the contradiction here?

Version Control for Designers
Version control, also known as source control or revision control is an integral part of any development workflow. Why? It is essentially a communication tool, just like email or IM, but it works with code rather than human conversation.

Read to Lead: How to Digest Books Above Your “Level” « RyanHoliday.net
The rare case of a decent how-to:<br />
<br />
"I shouldn’t be able to read most of the books on my shelf. I never took a single classical history class and I cheated through most of Economics 001. Still, the loci of my library are Greek History and Applied Economics. And though they often are beyond me educationally, I’m able to comprehend them because of some equalizing tricks. Reading to lead or learn requires that you treat your brain like the muscle that it is–lifting the subjects with the most tension and weight. For me, that means pushing ahead into subjects you’re not familiar with and wresting with them until you can–shying away from the “easy read.”<br />
"This is how I break down a new book."

Beurre blanc, choux pastry and tarte tatin recipes | Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall | Food | Life and style | The Guardian
Autumn's just the time to learn a few new skills and brush up a few old ones. Of course, it's the season for bottling and preserving, to lay down a body- and soul-feeding store of sparkling, enticing jars to see us through until spring. But it's a chance for other culinary adventures, too.

The Bad, the Good, and the Icon - The PowerPoint Team Blog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs
There are two main tools I use to create icons. The first should already be known to PowerPoint users from previous versions, and that’s the ability to edit the points of a shape. The novelty in PowerPoint 2010 is that you can right-click any shape now (not only free-form) and edit its points. The second tool I use is completely new to PowerPoint 2010 – combine shapes. You can learn about it from the videos in this blog, but to learn about all the possibilities of this tool, please check our previous blog post.
