Hecklers mar Romney’s visit to inner-city charter school in Philadelphia - The Washington Post
every paragraph leads me to think: "what a tool." so glad he thinks that there's no correlation between class size and student performance. do not vote for Romney, for the sake of your children!

via maggie eighteen (of west philly):
Madaline G. Dunn, 78, who said she has lived here for 50 years and volunteers at the school, said she is “personally offended” that Romney would visit her neighborhood.
“It’s not appreciated here,” she said. “It is absolutely denigrating for him to come in here and speak his garbage.”
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter (D) addressed protesters and the media, quipping that Romney “suddenly somehow found West Philadelphia.”
“It’s nice that he decided this late in his [campaign] to see what a city like Philadelphia is about,” Nutter said. But, he added, “I don’t know that a one-day experience in the heart of West Philadelphia is enough to get you ready to run the United States of America.”
“You want to have an urban experience?” Nutter added. “You want to have a West Philly experience? Then come out here and talk to somebody in West Philly.”

SAVE THE NOON
greetings from Kanemoto of Club Noon:

Why this teacher decided to fight back - TES New Teachers
"My initial reaction was to contact Mr Gove and invite him to shadow me for a full week, at school and at home, working days and the weekend. This would demonstrate to him that teachers are already “working as long as is required to do the job”, not just the 32.5 hours he quoted. It would show him how far off the mark his 8 or 16 pupil class sizes really are. It would allow me to introduce him to children who, for a variety of reasons, simply are not capable of achieving five A* to Cs including English and maths. It would also allow me to show him that not being able to reach that level of formal education doesn’t mean those individuals can’t be of value to society.

"What good would such an offer have done, though? Mr Gove would surely have politely turned me down. My next thought was to keep a timesheet and send it to him."

Our “white people problems” problem: Why it’s time to stop using “white” as a pejorative  | TV | For Our Consideration | The A.V. Club
"To some extent, this is mainly a personal beef. I get annoyed whenever anyone slaps a label on something and then presumes that the label itself says all that needs to be said. Whenever a critic or a potential audience member sniffs about “dad rock” or “chick lit” or “one for the fanboys,” it raises my hackles. If you’d rather not engage with what a piece of art actually is—as in, what it expresses and how well it expresses it—then fine. But don’t presume some kind of superiority because of that choice. One of the biggest fallacies in the way we talk about art is this idea that somehow personal taste equates to quality: That each of us miraculously only enjoys movies and music that are the best of their respective medium, and ergo, any movies and music we don’t enjoy must be terrible."

Here Is Bruce Lee Beating Up Racist Writer John Derbyshire, Who Has Cancer
apart from the roundup/summary of Derbyshire dreadfulness, bookmarked for especially cogent comments re being Asian-American in America (not necessarily redundant):

Michael Cho:
"So Asian-Americans, when they do have legitimate issues of racism and discrimination that face them, get reactions of, 'Its not that bad, especially if you consider what has happened to African-Americans or Latinos.' And this argument is especially prevalent in Southern California. Or, because Asian-Americans are still a growing group with no solid definition, as in we have 5th generation Asian-American as well as people who immigrated 3 months ago, America still treats us as "the other," and is dismissive of our issues.
"And the reaction for a long time was, 'Keep your head down, study hard, make money and Americans will respect you.' But there are generations of Asian-Americans, who have read Ron Takaki, Maxine Hong-Kingston, Helen Zia, Carlos Bulosan, Frank Chin, Urvashi Viad, Frank Wu, David Henry Hwang, etc. who want a voice in American politics, and want to have a more active role for Asian-Americans politically and socially. The want you to remember the internment and Vincent Chin, they want you to know how fucked up it is when NBC Sports runs headlines like 'Michelle Kwan Beaten By American Lipinski.' When those voices are raised, people don't want to hear them. There are a lot of reasons for that. But because Asian-American issues have constantly be delegitimized, or marginalized by American society, or other communities of color, we are forced to elevate these incidents which affect our community..."

willwriteforfood:
"...But then, as you pointed out so well, that attitude also renders actual complaints about discrimination or bias illegitimate. Look at all the "don't be so sensitive" comments on Gawker's own stories about Jeremy Lin, as though Asians need to wait until some "real" racial incident to call out racist attitudes, while completely ignoring all the many instances of actual violence against Asians..."

Book review: ‘The Social Conquest of Earth,’ by Edward O. Wilson - The Washington Post
“Our ancestors were one of only two dozen or so animal lines ever to evolve eusociality, the next major level of biological organization above the organismic,” Wilson writes. “There, group members across two or more generations stay together, cooperate, care for the young, and divide labor in a way favoring reproduction of some individuals over that in others.”
...
“A good first step for the liberation of humanity from the oppressive forms of tribalism would be to repudiate, respectfully, the claims of those in power who claim they speak for God, are a special representative of God, or have exclusive knowledge of God’s divine will,” he advises, and he includes in that group purveyors of “dogmatic political ideologies based on unchallengeable precepts, left and right.” Rounding out this view, he adds: “Their leaders may mean well. But humanity has suffered enough from grossly inaccurate history told by mistaken prophets.”

Humans are Humans are Humans | Cluster Mag
so many good thoughts. amazin' eighteen:
"Scavenging is basically always keeping your eyes peeled. If there’s something on the curb, it’s almost always worthwhile to check out. My friends and I have gotten so many ridiculous things for free this way. There’s a culture of free boxes around here, where folks just put stuff on the curb with a sign, and usually it’s all cleaned out come next day. There’s also a transient student population because West Philly is connected to several college campuses. The trash is plentiful, especially when the U Penn students move out in May. Good lord. We call that Penn Christmas. My housemate makes about $2,000 easy every year just from selling their old thrown-out textbooks.

"As for the stigma attached to re-use, that’s some bullshit rich people made up to control the non-affluent. Like back in feudal days when the starving peasants living on the king’s land couldn’t shoot a deer to eat because it already 'belonged' to the king. It really all goes back to power dynamics and maintaining control over the oppressed. Why can’t I eat the day-old dumpster food that is going to a landfill? It’s because it fucks up capitalist order and power dynamics. It’s about maintaining the made-up idea of scarcity so a few motherfuckers can stay in control.

"And let me just say that I am no crust punk. I listen to disco music and R&B and wear Mickey Mouse sweatshirts. It’s a shame that crust punks are the face of dumpstering, because I feel that a lot of people depend on the discarded world—they just don’t brag about it."

Tiger Beatdown › Guess What? Shaming People For Being Fat Doesn’t Magically Make Them Thin!
"On the surface, encouraging people of all ages to eat more fresh food and exercise in safe and enjoyable ways if possible seems like generally sound advice. It would be better if it came with a side of actually enabling those activities, like addressing huge disparities in the food system and providing children with safe places to get outdoors and move around. This information, however, is usually delivered alone, and in this heavyhanded shaming format, one which primarily sets up fat people as targets of bullying and abuse; visitors to ‘Habit Heroes’ would learn that fat is your own fault and that fat people are bad, rather than learning more about the complex social, dietary, genetic, and other factors involved in weight. They would also learn that it’s acceptable to target fat people for commentary and ‘advice’ because it would be ‘for their own good.’ And they wouldn’t learn about the difficulties involved in accessing fresh food and exercise."

"El Librotraficante" Tony Diaz Defies Ethnic Studies Book Ban with Caravan to Arizona
JUAN GONZALEZ: On Monday, El Libro-Traficante is set to launch a small caravan to bring carloads of ethnic studies books into Arizona that were banned by public school officials in Tucson after the city suspended its acclaimed Mexican American Studies program due to a state ban on the teaching of ethnic studies. The banned books include Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years, edited by Bill Bigelow and Bob Peterson; Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire; Occupied America: A History of Chicanos by Rodolfo Acuña_; and Chicano: The History of the Mexican Civil Rights Movement by F. Arturo Rosales.
...
TONY DIAZ: Evidently, he wanted to replace Mexican-American studies with a real, live class on doublespeak, because that’s all doublespeak. Huppenthal knows that Americans would not tolerate a direct ban on literature. So he has actually taken oppression and updated it. At the end of the day, yes, there is actually a law, America, in Arizona, to prohibit courses in high schools. Let that sink in.

U.S. Accused of Using Drones to Target Rescue Workers and Funerals in Pakistan
CHRIS WOODS: Even CIA agrees that it’s killed at least 50, and perhaps as high as 60, civilians. Their figures and ours are very different, and I think that’s based on how they interpreted "civilian." But nevertheless, CIA agrees that they’ve killed 50 to 60 civilians. There’s not been an investigation into a single one of those civilian deaths, and there’s not been a cent of compensation ever paid to anyone who’s been killed accidentally in Pakistan. And that’s a problem. When you have a covert intelligence agency running a military campaign, your accountability effectively collapses. And I think it’s worrying.

"In a new theory, they claim that ambiguity actually makes language more efficient, by allowing for the reuse of short, efficient sounds that listeners can easily disambiguate with the help of context...
