Eames can't help it. He's never seen Arthur die before.

The hell was that it had still been him the whole time. It hadn't been Stockholm, he'd been trained for that; and it hadn't been some kind of magic that turned you into a zombie. Everything he had, everything he was, he'd given to Loki. He'd been happy to do it. Funny how little free will seemed to matter, when you got down to it.

If he wasn't interested? Erik gave him a blank look, and the words tumbled out of his mouth before he could stop himself: "you did see my record, right?"

"Oh yes, that," Xavier said vaguely. "I did. Metal, isn't it? I suppose that's why you were touching that gate. Can't imagine it myself, having my own abilities restrained."

Arthur knows exactly where they are, even with the snow landing fast and thick around them. He knows the woods they’re in better than anyone in the kingdom, recognises every laden bough as he would a brother, and all Merlin’s talk about being lost is just wasted air. Arthur could never be lost in Camelot, not on these lands he’s ranged over since boyhood, this soil he’s fought and lost and bled for.

“...where we’re going, Arthur,” Merlin is saying, and Arthur turns to him with a sigh, because apparently ignoring Merlin isn’t going to make him stop talking. “We’ve passed that stump four times now.”

Arthur tries normal life as a bank manager after the Army shuts down its PASIV program, until Eames comes along and steals that normal life right out from under him.

Steve can tell there’s something wrong with Tony. He just doesn’t know what happened. Or why Tony’s friends seem to think it’s his fault.

He brings up a hand to rub his eyes and clear his vision, and freezes as he sees a paw instead of fingers.

Arthur and Eames call each other between jobs. No really, that's it.

Sometimes Tony is popular in all the worst ways, and the Avengers keep discovering that being his friend can be terrifying.

Merlin's mouth opened and shut a few times, no sound coming out. He replayed the conversation in his head, trying to work out what on earth Arthur thought was going on. If the entire Belton family had burst into the room naked and dancing a jig, he couldn't have been more confused.

So this is what it felt like to be normal. Merlin opens his eyes to the cool, shining metal of Arthur's unsheathed blade. "Sorcerer," Arthur spits.

Arthur was surrounded, fighting off three attackers at a time, but he couldn't battle them all. Merlin ran towards him, but he wasn't fast enough, and an axe glinted in the sunlight before bearing down on Arthur, death certain in a matter of moments--

Closing his eyes, Merlin sucked in a breath. "Kill me, Arthur," he said.

"Mine!” probably wasn’t Arthur’s first word, but it was his most used.

"I don't like to share." Arthur smirked at Cadwgan, who was settling himself heavily on a facing bench, just around the curve of the rough circle. Merlin flinched at that, forcing down his natural urge to protest that he was not Arthur's to share, regardless.

Scowling, Arthur worried if perhaps Ealdor had been threatened again. Or maybe Merlin was fleeing from a servant girl he'd gotten in trouble. That thought did little to dispel his growing irritation; now he had visions of dark haired idiot children staring up at him with big blue eyes and calling him 'prat'. Multiple children.

They'd returned from Ealdor two days prior, and he's hardly seen Merlin since. The trip back had been quiet and uncomfortable. Merlin was visibly upset over Will, and they'd all tried to give him space so he could cope in peace. Instead of getting better once they returned to Camelot, however, Merlin's mood had deteriorated. He'd returned to his duties, but Arthur had felt so guilty giving him any chores that he'd dismissed him, telling him to go rest. Apparently, it isn't doing him any good.

"Don't think I'm stupid--right, I know, you already think I'm stupid--but this is a bad time of year for my mum and I'm kind of--I miss her. I'd like to see her. Even though it's the worst time for it."

Merlin goes and sees Arthur once he and Gaius return from Isle of the Blessed.

"Arthur doesn’t know," Morgana said, too quickly, and for some reason Arthur felt as though the bottom had just dropped out of his stomach.

It makes sense that Morgana finds out first. Of course, it makes it messier when Arthur does.

The first time they end up in bed together, Arthur is crawling towards death with his fingers raked into the ground.

Lancelot changes things for everyone.

"They take care of the chickens at the farm, don’t you know?" the fox said. "Oh, I see. You must be new." It tilted its head. "Yes. I don’t recall ever meeting a human here who can talk to me before."

I turned him into a dragon.

They walk back to Camelot in silence. Merlin doesn’t say anything about the blackened village behind him, doesn’t try to block out the screams in his ears. It’s alright, it will be, he’ll make it so.

Five ways the secret isn't revealed.

On their fifth day out from Tintagel, they find Tristan and Iseult.

"I...I know, that’s why it’s terrifying. Somehow, I felt it, the entire time. But how? How can it be you, when you're-?"

Out of all the reactions Merlin may have expected Arthur to have to the "I've been talking to the dragon under the castle"-thing, insane laugher wasn't one of them.

It appears to be influenza.

"It is time for Mordred to whet his appetite in battle," Morgana said.

"Oh, just shut up and refill my bath with warm water and I'll undress if it makes you work quicker!"

"If he does not return within these walls before sunset, no mortal power can bring him back to Camelot, and he will ride with the Hunt forever."

There are some sacrifices Arthur's not willing to make.

But Beltane Eve is also a day sacred to the Old Ways, and it is said that from time to time Lord Herne, Herne the Huntsman, will put on a mask, and dance with a village maiden.
