So this is what it felt like to be normal. Merlin opens his eyes to the cool, shining metal of Arthur's unsheathed blade. "Sorcerer," Arthur spits.

Arthur dreams. The lake is vast and tranquil, so clear he can see the sword hidden in its depths. Merlin smiles next to him, the angles of his face subtly changed: hardened, older, his eyes flecked with gold. A faint white scar traces the edge of his jaw like a lingering caress.

Arthur doesn’t come looking for Merlin. Gaius wouldn’t expect him to. Uther certainly never came looking for Gaius, and as far as Arthur is different from his father, he is still Crown Prince Arthur Pendragon.

Anhora was really in no mood for a game of Poker. But it was a Thursday. And Thursdays were Poker Nights. The firewhiskey was in, nibbles were on the table, and as usual the other two were late. He knew that when they arrived there would be the usual excuses. "Death-Eaters got into the school," or "I had to help destroy the One Ring." There was always something with those two. Like being Keeper of the Unicorns was less important than either of their jobs.

Hunith insists on saving them as a keepsake. It's silly and sentimental, but it's proof that Merlin and Arthur are here and that they exist together.

Nothing really changes after Merlin recovers from the poison. Well, not right away at least.

He had not even considered Merlin's execution an option, and the knowledge settles like a stone in his gut.

"All three of them? Really?"

In his dreams the monsters come. They are dark, shapeless and terrifying. He knows he should run. The very core of his being tells him it’s the only thing to do but he stands still. He has to stay and fight because he’s the prince and it’s his duty. He knows he’ll die trying.

"Please tell me you mean you’ve taken in this badly tempered creature and named it after the Prince as a show of goodwill." "Sorry," Merlin says.

Just as the thought crossed his mind, the road directly in front of them exploded.

"Like I was really eager to go in the first place." He half-laughs. "But I can't anyway. Destiny, and all that."

Because sometimes, when you're that young, it's all you can do.

Gwen answers what Arthur doesn't say instead of what Merlin does. "You'll be a good king."

Arthur clears his throat, feeling sure that his father does not want him to hear whatever apology he apparently wants to make to Gaius. Gaius, apparently, was right. Edwin, apparently, was extremely wrong about something, as he is lying dead on the floor with an axe in his skull.

They'd returned from Ealdor two days prior, and he's hardly seen Merlin since. The trip back had been quiet and uncomfortable. Merlin was visibly upset over Will, and they'd all tried to give him space so he could cope in peace. Instead of getting better once they returned to Camelot, however, Merlin's mood had deteriorated. He'd returned to his duties, but Arthur had felt so guilty giving him any chores that he'd dismissed him, telling him to go rest. Apparently, it isn't doing him any good.

Merlin goes and sees Arthur once he and Gaius return from Isle of the Blessed.
