Now, the latest application of MPLS is implementing provider provisioned VPNs. Using MPLS for implementing VPNs is a viable alternative to using a pure layer-2 solution, a pure layer-3 solution, or any of the tunneling methods commonly used for implementing VPNs.
When deciding on implementing an IP/MPLS-based VPN, the service provider has two choices:
