Auto-Tune was invented in 1995 by Andy Hildebrand, a US geophysicist with a background in using sound waves to map oil wells. The idea came at a lunch party when one of the guests, a singer, suggested Hildebrand design something to help her sing in tune. He did so, and the programme quickly caught on after its commercial release by Hildebrand’s technology company Antares in 1997.
