New JavaScript HTML5 Report Format | GitHub
Interesting tool: it'll take any JSON and convert it to a report (including making a nice sortable table for a list). You can try it out online, too: http://ajaxstack.com/jsonreport/

Social Media Insights Engine | ThinkUp
"ThinkUp captures your posts, replies, retweets, friends, followers, and links on social networks like Twitter and Facebook." Like TweetNest, but more social? Also: built on PHP/MySQL, like TweetNest, unlike Diaspora.

Tweet Nest
I should probably install this and have a look at it. It'd be interesting to see if I can transform my own JSON backups to it, for example.

Convert and Download Videos to iTunes | Evom
"Convert your movies and download flash videos from the internet." Earlier this year I had a huge pile of unwatched video URLs which would have been great to have on the iPhone, Instapaper-style. Luckily, it seems as if waiting long enough is enough to make products happen.

Flash CS5 will export to HTML5 Canvas | 9 to 5 Mac
Well, this is interesting. I doubt it'll be that good at launch, but there's potential there, and this is maybe more interesting than whether or not Flash can be compiled to the App Store.

Hone | Twitter RSS Links
"Twitter RSS Links allows you to generate a (RSS|ATOM|JSON|XML) feed from your friend's tweets that contains HTTP links." Does what it says, with OAuth (so it works for private folks). I really should do a delicious-network style un-shortening UI on top of the JSON, mind you.

Twitter friends' favorites feeds as OPML | 0xDECAFBAD
This isn't exactly terribly friendly, but until Twitter do something to expose favourites more visibly or someone writes a nice GUI app (hard, because it requires n*following calls), this'll do for me. (I imported it into Google Reader, which I don't use otherwise.) Source on Github, naturally.

Is a Firehose of Snowflakes a Nor’easter? | Laughing Meme
"We’re building streams of photos in real time. Examining the huge stream of data events that happen on Flickr, the social activity, the searching, the meta-data creation, and fishing from that stream to build 3 real time streams. We’re then exposing those streams via a near real time polling based API."

the open source Spotify client | despotify
"C implementation based on F/OSS code; Proof of Concept multi-OS client with curses (text-based) UI; Proof of Concept gateway to the Spotify service (text-based protocol, for supporting REST)" It compiles cleanly on Mac OS X and the gateway looks handy for exposing playlists (and lists of what's available) to people who haven't signed up.

JSON in Firefox | τεχνοσοφια
"JSONovich is a Firefox extension that pretty-prints and colorizes JSON content (of types application/json and text/x-json). It uses json.org's json2.js to parse and indent JSON data, unless there is a native JSON parser as in Firefox 3.1, and google-code-prettify's parser and stylesheet to colorize it."

advice to a new journalist: learn to code | Charles Arthur
"You’d be able to knock up something like the Guardian BNP map without a second thought." I'd argue that you don't necessarily need to be able to code, but you do need to be able to use good tools; Excel and DabbleDB spring to mind (but aren't mentioned in the comments). (Note megp asking for Dopplr CSV exports so she can do her own visualisations.) Still, interesting thoughts.

Twitter has really awful tools for following conversations, so Quotably tries to fix it. Unfortunately, unlike Jaiku, Twitter itself doesn't retain enough metadata: just look at Gruber. Oh, doesn't work with private twitterers either. Meh.

Picnik integration into Flickr. Short review: more capable than Preloadr (which I'd been using) but some things I'd use a lot are well hidden. Lots of annoying dialogs about leaving the page when I'm not though.

Bare Bones Software : BBEdit : New in BBEdit 8.5
Looks a lot like they're playing TextMate catchup, frankly. Code folding, and renaming the glossary to clippings, for example. Plus it's a $30 upgrade (if you didn't buy BBEdit 8.2 this year). Could be a hard sell.
