Mapping the World's Photos | Cornell University
For some reason, I didn't have this bookmarked. Now I do. "We investigate how to organize a large collection of geotagged photos, working with a dataset of about 35 million images collected from Flickr." "We illustrate using these techniques to organize a large photo collection, while also revealing various interesting properties about popular cities and landmarks at a global scale."

Henry Beck Rules, not OK? | Max Roberts
A 27 page PDF by Max Roberts studying how - and how not - to design a diagram of a railway system. Given the "London Tubemap" that's been doing the rounds, tl;dr types should skip to page 14: "The arbitrary breaking of the single-angle rule introduces an disorder into the design with no payback." It also contains some of Beck & Roberts' alternatives, such as the attractive 60 degree version on p12.

Unwebbable | A List Apart
'Electronic commerce, we eventually figured out, does not take the form of “shopping malls” you “walk” through. “Magazines” and “catalogues” do not have discrete pages you flip (complete with sound effects) and dog-ear. “Web sites” do not look like magazine layouts, complete with multicolumn text and callouts.' An interesting post on moving things to the web.

Station Usage Notes | Office of Rail Regulation
PDF containing a list of caveats for the data the Guardian has published. "The usage information is based on ticket sales in the financial year 2002/03 and covers all National Rail stations. It does not include those stations that are owned by TfL. ... The ticketing system does not record certain journeys made using TfL bought travelcards, TfL Freedom Passes, staff travel passes. ... Care should be taken when using the usage figures for stations within Travelcard zones. Where possible, journeys in such areas are allocated to a particular such based on modelled assumptions."

Automatic layout of metro maps | Jonathan Stott
A PDF thesis (full title: "Automatic Layout Of Metro Maps Using Multicriteria Optimisation") on using Java and graph theory to lay out rail networks using Beck-esque metro map principles. According to the research, the automatic maps were preferable to geographic and published ones. No London or NY (ie really big) networks, though.

Fast, Nimble PDF Generation For Ruby | Prawn
"If you've ever needed to produce PDF documents before, in Ruby or another language, you probably know how much it can suck. Prawn takes the pain out of generating beautiful printable documents" If Tom and mattb recommend this, I think I can trust it to work.
