On machine tags, places, uploaders, concordance, and a todo list from those beyond the veil. So many lovely turns of phrase, so many things to play with.

This: "It’s really important that social tools of any kind start with the personal. We are not merely social types, we are selfishly social. You can offer me all the network effects and benefits of scale you like, but unless your service is immediately useful for me alone (it has a good one-player mode, say) I’m not going to get it."

Phil Gyford follows up on my automated copying of machine tags from digital photo EXIF by suggesting some versions for photographs for film.

Aaron on machine tags, noticings, fake subway APIs, Flickr, and stuff. Well worth a read (and as Tom Armitage says, with a great flow between sections).

Flickr adds supports for more prettified joins between services, using machine tag extras as the source. Lots of questions and observations I should split into a note, but for now: hurrah, and it's nice to see this launched, especially for Dopplr.

It's always nice to see machine tags as site joins natively supported. Hurrah for straup, Flickr, and Jones for an excellent documenting screengrab. (Shameless plug: install the GM userscript from snaptrip and you'll see trip tags prettified too.)

A nice way of displaying machine tags, including reclaiming HTML tables (and with a nod to the Flickr machine tag browser; thanks). I'm not sure if I could make this work for the Flickr version; there are possibly too many namespaces. Still, maybe I'll try for the most popular ones.

"Since the YQL query above returns tags containing the celestial coordinates of a flickr photo, those coordinates can be passed to the Google Earth plugin to display the same area of the night sky. Here’s an example for the Horsehead Nebula in Orion." Nice.

Yay Foe! A short video on IO9 discussing the Astrometry bot and its use on Flickr and with the NMM's group there.

A short post introducing the Flickr Clock pool, which takes videos and puts them into what looks like it'll be a very nice looking Stamen... interactive thingy? Interestingly, submissions have to use machine tags with the time:hour namespace:predicate pair, because video sucks and doesn't have metadata.

An idea that came up at papercamp was to build a prototype of a book community out of photographs of them on Flickr. Turns out there's already a book machine tag namespace in use. Now to see what's worth formalising out of it.

"Astrotags are a new way to label your photos of space – they describe what your photo is of, and where in space that is. With your help, we hope that astrotags will let us build a beautiful montage of your astronomy photos." Push a new one on the todo stack.

Experimental methods to getNamespaces, getPredicates and getValues. Suddenly a machine tag browser is possible. Now, if only I can figure out enough jQuery to build it...

I think I'm going to move to using all the tags he mentions here, as well as offering to put in "proper" location data (with the flickr.geo methods). Also- nice hack, and a really good prod for me.

"Adds a list of your contacts on the flickr photo page so you can easily machine tag the photo with them." Might be worth a look, next time I'm in Firefox.

Other people want EXIF searchability too. (I mention my vaguely-but-not-really released Flickr EXIF machine tag script thing.)
