New Perspectives on Old Perspectives | Huffington Post
"The web project [...] highlights the work of NYPL patron Joshua Heineman, who started creating his own moving images from Library stereograms as an art project for his blog. The Library's NYPL Labs team was so impressed it decided to build on his idea. Here's his story about how the idea took shape and grew into a Library project." A good project and a good read.

The Library of Congress and Twitter | The American Prospect
"How much will it cost?" "Well, it's a gift; we didn't pay for it. But it will be the cost of storing what is, right now, around 5 terabytes, and the staff effort of maybe one full-time person over the years."

Welcome! | PyEphem
"PyEphem provides scientific-grade astronomical computations for the Python programming language. Given a date and location on the Earth’s surface, it can compute the positions of the Sun and Moon, of the planets and their moons, and of any asteroids, comets, or earth satellites whose orbital elements the user can provide."

Ben O’Steen's talk at the Open Knowledge Conference. Tickles a lot of fancies, this, and announces a "TextCamp". Hmm.

Birmingham Central Library’s final chapter? | Building Design
"John Madin’s 1974 Birmingham Central Library was designed to be flexible, for a possible future without books. English Heritage would like to see it listed, but the city’s political elite say it is impossible to refurbish for modern needs and want it demolished." Shame.

jQuery 1.3 and the jQuery Foundation | jQuery
A new release, including the new Sizzle selector library, and a foundation in case any of the developers flip out (or join Google, or whatever it is that gets a project neglected these days).

AJAX Libraries API | Google Code
Why bother with all that pesky JavaScript library hosting yourself? Now you can call to Google and have them handle it. Complete with versioning, so you can make sure nothing changes under you.

A jQuery-based charting library. Only does 2d plots (no pie charts yet), but it worked on Safari. When I was scrabbling around earlier this year, all the charting libraries still sucked. Hopefully this won't.

jQuery for JavaScript programmers
I spent a bit of the weekend playing about with JavaScript, and jQuery was the nicest of the libraries I was dealing with (and there were a few). Simon Willison's written a nice introduction to it.

"The new Banshee services stack will provide a powerful D-Bus interface that will make it possible for developers to create alternate user interface frontends" I wondered ages ago about iTunes splitting into UI and a DAAP provider. Sounds interesting.
