The Future According to Mead | The Architect's Newspaper
Craig Hodgetts: 'Joining the throngs of the faithful as they jostled for a better view of his paintings, and searching in vain for even one fellow architect, one could not help wondering why the place was not swarmed by young designers. And one was reminded once again of just how insular the architects of the “Me Generation” had become. On display were images depicting cityscapes and buildings that might have been snatched from the most recent international competitions. Lustrous metallic surfaces, twisting towers, parametric volumes, all hauntingly beautiful, and all bearing dates—wait for it—from the early 1970s and ’80s!'

GIF: A Technical History | Enthusiasms
"From a technical standpoint, the success of the lowly GIF is a mystery. Both as an image format and as a video/animation format, it’s vastly inferior to the alternatives." And yet, it succeeds. This is a good look at why (through the lens of a hex editor, no less).

San Francisco Panarama | Tom Pope
"2008 celebrates the 130th anniversary of Muybridge's panorama and in that year Tom Pope and James Doyle re-photographed the panorama on the original site. Employing the largest Polaroid camera in the world; the Polaroid 20x24." For some reason I have a (really nicely produced) leaflet about this, but I have no idea any more where I picked it up.

Lighthouses could be switched off | BBC News
"The light at Eastbourne's Beachy Head lighthouse - and five others around England - may soon be turned off." "Most vessels, even smaller ones, now use satellite navigation systems like GPS and no longer rely on the beam from lighthouses." It's a shame, but it's also understandable. I do love lighthouses though.

The Meaning of Photoshop | Subtraction.com
Khoi Vinh, slightly edited: "We’ve spent the better part of a decade and a half debating digital privacy, but compare the number of people who have been exposed to the sheer amount of manipulated, unreal and just plain fake imagery that assaults each of us every day, and the case for a more robust discussion about digital imaging looks like a pretty good one."

candace does a far better job of documenting my life visually than I do these days; these are from our boxing day head-clearing morning walk. The one of the vintage car going over the bridge is a particular highlight.

Specifications | Metadata Working Group
"This document describes how best to use existing standards such as Exif, IPTC, and XMP to address the key organizational metadata questions that most consumers have." Does distinguish location-shown and location-taken, but shies away from trying to fix the timezone problem. Ah well. Spec is a PDF, sigh.
