How Christian Marclay created “The Clock” | The New Yorker
9 weeks ago by blech
On the art world's most recent hit, The Clock, and its creator. Lots of interesting tidbits here, such as his willingness to turn a blind eye to other's copyright to create his art while insisting that its display be under his control. I still want to see it, mind you.

Well, that was quick: "only content that is ‘safe,’ ‘public’ and has sharing enabled can be pinned to Pinterest." Mind you, the headline is kind of misleading (I think- I should install the "pinmarklet" and test it.)

Romney and Gingrich Pull Songs After Complaints | NYTimes.com
february 2012 by blech
‘"Strike another two songs from the Republican playlist: “Eye of the Tiger,” by Survivor, and “Wavin’ Flag,” by the Somali-born musician K’naan. “When you think about every iconic song that has emotional resonance for millions and millions of Americans, in almost every instance, Republican candidates can’t use the song because the artist is not supportive,” said Steve Schmidt.’

Why Suzanne Vega is Re-Recording Her History | WSJ
december 2011 by blech
"I don’t own those other recordings. I don’t own the masters. Those are owned by A&M Records and Blue Note, and I’m not with them anymore. I wanted to own a physical copy of my own back catalog. In this economy it’s important to own what you make. If I tour for the next 20 years I have recordings I can sell at concerts and people can buy them directly."

The government shouldn't hang on Google | guardian.co.uk

Charles Arthur: "Recent statements from Cameron and Willetts on copyright and patents show the dangers of being in thrall to IT giants" Also: "[Startups] prefer real streets in real cities, where there's a bagel shop down the road, three other startups within five minutes' walk who they can meet for a chat, and a choice of pubs and coffee houses in which to have ad-hoc meetings."

Olympic Park to rival Silicon Valley in David Cameron's vision for east London | UK news | The Guardian
november 2010 by blech
"David Cameron will today set out a vision of London's East End becoming a hi-tech rival to Silicon Valley on the US west coast, disclosing Google, Facebook and a host of cutting-edge firms have committed to invest in the Olympic Park." "Cameron will also disclose that he will look at a potentially far-reaching change to intellectual property rights after Google told him UK laws are far more restrictive than the US." Well.

Quarter of tweens on social networks | guardian.co.uk
march 2010 by blech
"A quarter of UK internet users aged eight to 12 had profiles on Facebook, Bebo or MySpace last year, research has found, although the lowest minimum age set on any of the sites is 13." "44% of children between 12 and 15 thought downloading shared copies of films and music for free should not be illegal." Quite a few interesting nuggets here.

Government given five-year piracy warning | guardian.co.uk
april 2009 by blech
Utter rubbish from the Industry Trust (who?): "The proportion of illegal film and TV content distributed globally online is heading towards 90% of the total." Surely that can't be 90% of consumption; not that many people use laptops. Evidently they mean 10% of their output is so rubbish it's not even worth bootlegging. Having seen the reviews of most British film comedy, that sounds low...

Trois strikes and you're out | The Economist
april 2009 by blech
"Mr Sarkozy is determined to push [the 'three strikes' law] through parliament later this month. He first met his wife, Carla Bruni, a musician who has supported the law, at a presentation of a report on internet piracy by Denis Olivennes, former boss of Fnac, a retailer. Mr Olivennes’s report led directly to the HADOPI law."

Danny O’Brien is really on form in his fresh burst of sponsored blogging, and this is a great post. A valid criticism of ffffound - you can't find the source of an image - but at least with Flickr there's a way: flickr.com/photo.gne?id= and put in the image filename (eg flickr.com/photo.gne?id=74). Not that it helps with Blogger's horrific URLs.
