Essay: Losing Clout - 4.12.10 - Jack Lessenberry Essays and Interviews
april 2010 by bkerr
At least one other Michigan congressman could be defeated for re-election this year. The census results are expected to mean Michigan will lose another seat in Congress – the fifth we will have lost since the 1970s.
And the sad but sobering truth is that a decade from now, our most powerful and longest serving congressmen are all but certain to be gone, thanks not to the voters, but Father Time.
Dingell, after all, is 84 this year. Conyers and Kildee, 81. Sander Levin turns 79; Carl Levin, 76. They can’t be around forever.
We are facing a new economy and new challenges, and before long, will be relying on a crop of new leaders in Washington.

Local newspapers in peril: The town without news | The Economist
july 2009 by bkerr
At the moment hyper-local sites tend to be filled with discussions of town fetes and the next music night at the village pub. It may be, says Roland Bryan of Associated, that this is the equivalent of small talk at a cocktail party, and that people will eventually get down to local politics. Or they may not. As local newspapers fail, we may learn that their real value was less as a check on politicians than simply as a forum for casual conversation—a place where a town can talk to itself.
