CV Dazzle by Adam Harvey
CV Dazzle™ is camouflage from computer vision (CV). It is a form of expressive interference that combines makeup and hair styling (or other modifications) with face-detection thwarting designs. The name is derived from a type of camouflage used during WWI, called Dazzle, which was used to break apart the gestalt-image of warships, making it hard to discern their directionality, size, and orientation. Likewise, the goal of CV Dazzle™ is to break apart the gestalt of a face, or object, and make it undetectable to computer vision algorithms, in particular face detection.

And because face detection is the first step in automated facial recognition, CV Dazzle™ can be used in any environment where automated face recognition systems are in use, such as FaceBook, Google's Picasa, or Flickr.

CV Dazzle™ was developed by Adam Harvey as a thesis project at New York University's Interactive Telecommunication Program in the spring of 2010 to explore ways of protecting and interfering with privacy compromising technologies.

Unqualified Reservations: Wolfram Alpha and hubristic user interfaces
"Dr. Wolfram, may I mention a word to you? That word is MySpace. If there is any such person as this average person, she has a MySpace account. Does she generate customized nutrition labels? On a regular basis, or just occasionally? In what other similar activities does she engage - monitoring the population of Burma? Graphing the lifecycle of stars? Charting Korean copper consumption since the 1960s? Perhaps you should feed MySpace into your giant electronic brain, and see what comes out.

Like most hubristic UIs, Wolfram Alpha is operating with a completely fictitious user narrative. The raison d'etre of the natural-language interface, stated baldly, is to create a usable tool for stupid people who might be confused or intimidated by a tree of menus. The market of stupid people is indeed enormous. The market of stupid people who like to use data-visualization tools is, well, not. (And since the interface is not in fact easy but actually quite difficult, it achieves the coveted status of a non-solution to a non-problem.)"

Dan Lockton | The Design with Intent Toolkit v.0.9
"The Design with Intent Toolkit aims to help designers faced with ‘design for behaviour change’ briefs. The poster* [PDF] features 12 design patterns which recur across design fields (interaction, products, architecture), and there are also 35 more detailed here on the website. Some of the names will be unfamiliar, but we hope the patterns and examples will be understandable, and inspire your own concepts."

The Weblog for the AboutUs Wiki — “User-generated content” –> “Community-curated works”
I agree about 'user generated content' (esp. if spelled 'UGC'), but 'community-curated works' isn't any better. (Not all 'UGC' is made by a community. There aren't really that many communities. Curation is a professional activity of a curator or archivist. We should render obsolete those activities, not borrow the term. The communities (wherever the hell they are) will rise up and say, "BEHOLD MY WORKS YE MIGHTY AND DESPAIR!").

Notional Slurry | Mitten’s self-organized page layout
A neat amorphous idea, c/o agent Mitten via Tozier, filtering through the microcoworking gaggle. (My take was that a treemap would be a cool presentation for a "status page" or "aggregate all my junk page" and not so much a weblog dustbin / archive.)
