Bookshelf: Wade Davis Writing Studio
While many need light-filled rooms for inspiration, he wanted to avoid large windows opening onto a residential neighborhood and sought a cave-like atmosphere to disappear into his work. Subtle light was brought in by other means when the architect built a dome above his client’s desk (which Price describes as similar to the rotunda of the oracle’s temple at Delphi) and filled it with the books he uses the most. Davis whimsically calls the space his “Navajo kiva of knowledge.”

The Brain by Olson Kundig Architects - enpundit
The Brain is a 14,280 cubic-foot cinematic workshop where the client, a filmmaker, can work through ideas. Located in Seattle, Washington, the inspiration for the design comes from the neighborhood birthplace of invention, the garage.

The building, by Olson Kundig Architects, is essentially a cast-in-place concrete box, meant to be a strong yet neutral background allowing for the space to be completely flexible. A steel mezzanine was constructed inside the concrete wall on the north side of the box. All internal structures were made with raw, hot-rolled steel sheets.

[Has a fireman's pole, a mezzanine level, and some nice stairs.]

CUergo: Sitting and Standing
The bottom line:
Sit to do computer work. Sit using a height-adjustable, downward titling keyboard tray for the best work posture, then every 20 minutes stand for 2 minutes AND MOVE. The absolute time isn’t critical but about every 20-30 minutes take a posture break and move for a couple of minutes.  Simply standing is insufficient. Movement is important to get blood circulation through the muscles. Research shows that you don’t need to do vigorous exercise (e.g. jumping jacks) to get the benefits, just walking around is sufficient. So build in a pattern of creating greater movement variety in the workplace (e.g. walk to a printer, water fountain, stand for a meeting, take the stairs, walk around the floor, park a bit further away from the building each day).

Desktime - Shared Desks and Coworking in Chicago
No matter where you are or what day it is, there’s an affordable desk waiting for you. We're trying to change the way people use their workspace, giving people the ability to work from their apartment one afternoon and a bad ass office in the heart of the city the next.

We're based out of Chicago where we're creating simple, useful software to help people find, share, and manage extra space. We manage our own coworking space in Chicago and use our software every day. We're excited you're trying our software and look forward to your help in building our community!

from the desk of…
You turn your camera on your workspace. Please, don’t stage it. Don’t clean it (a messy desk doesn’t make a messy mind). Don’t make it something you or your work is not. Keep it real.

How do you work? What about your lighting? View? Office? At home? Coordinates, please. Clean and tidy? How many hours a day? Sitting? Standing? Coffee cups? Is that tea? Minimalist? Scattered? Type A plus A plus A? A-B? What’s your equation? Creatively sprawled? Feel like you need to tidy up–maybe you shouldn’t. Map it out.

This is a collaborative snapshot of what makes us uniquely us. To an extent, our space reflects what kind of work we produce. Add as much or little to the project as you want. Just participate.

Cool Tools: GeekDesk
All of this explains why I am so happy to have discovered the GeekDesk. Simply put, it is a traditional two-legged desk frame that uses an electric motor to raise or lower the working surface from 26" to 46.5" and anywhere in-between. It can lift up to 175 pounds, and it rises and falls at 1" per second.

The desk itself is made up of two steel legs connected by a cross bar that contains the electric motor and rack-and-pinion lift mechanism. The top of the desk is screwed on to the legs. GeekDesk sells the legs separately for those interested in attaching their own surface.

DesksNear.Me :: Where do you want to work today?
Desks Near Me is a simple and beautiful way for freelancers, contractors, and other nomadic workers to see great places where they can work.

There are plenty of fantastic companies worldwide, such as Inspire9, The Frontier Group, eLabs, and Obtiva, who offer up their fantastic working environment to individuals who need a change of scenery or companions. This is fantastic! Unfortunately, until now, it hasn't been easy for individuals to find places like this or to even know that they existed.

This is why we built Desks Near Me. So, start searching for a place to work above, or add a place now!

Anders & His Terribly Interesting Website - Office Worker Hobo Code
Life ain't easy. There's dogs to dodge and trains to catch. And have you ever tried cooking beans over a fire barrel while keeping one hand free in case a knife fight breaks out? To help each other, we hobos use chalk or coal to leave markings to share directions, information, and warnings.

You may be lazing in a cubicle somewhere or taking calls in a corner office, but we know you've got your own daily challenges. So on behalf of hobos everywhere, we present the Office Worker Hobo Code. With a Sharpie and some Post-Its, you can leave messages for co-workers and make their lives just a little bit easier. That's hobo style.

Arduino based Office-WTF-Counter
As in any office, my co-workers and I experience several WTF-Situations during our working day. So we decided to implement a simple system to count the WTF's and use them as a metric for our working climate :-)

we use an "emergency stop"-Button which is connected to an arduino. This arduino sends the string "WTF" on the serial line a little python scrip writes them to a file, another processing app count's the lines in the file and offers the result via http, which is read by a processing app for visualisation ...

It can print specialized characters for A/V, electrical, and safety applications, and it’ll do sequentially numbered labels to cut down on typing. My personal favorite is the ability to print on DYMO’s special heat-shrink wire sheath.
