`I just drove all the way from New York,´ Michael says, high-pitched and with muffled laughter, like he can hardly believe what he's just done.

But most of the time he says nothing, just looks at it, like he is not really seeing the painting at all but something else, and he looks at Pam sideways and not quite smiles but beams.
