Facebook Investor Roger McNamee Explains Why Social Is Over - Business Insider
Microsoft is toast because we're moving to a post-PC era;
HTML5, the new web standard that allows to make interactive web pages, is going to revolutionize the media and advertising industries;
Social is "done", it's now a feature, don't go do a social startup.

A Comprehensive Look at the New Microsoft (Vista) Fonts | The NeoSmart Files
With every new version of Windows or Office, Microsoft Corporation seems to generally like to package a couple of small freebies that make it a sweeter deal, after all, as they say: it’s the little things that count. Windows Vista and Office 2007 are no exception: not only is Microsoft apparently trying to make up for lost years (almost 6 for Vista, and four for Office), and it is doing a great job! At NeoSmart we’ve only had praise for the Office team, and we feel that the Microsoft Typography team is at the very least on-par with them, if not even higher… Once you’ve read this review, we’re sure you’ll agree.

msttcorefonts on RHEL6 / Centos 6 / SL6 | Oimon's Blog
msttcorefonts is a way of obtaining the Microsoft TrueType fonts on Linux. However, version 6 release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux no longer includes a pre-requisite of msttcorefonts package, namely chkfontpath, which in turn, relies on the font server package xfs. The latest version of msttcorefonts at sourceforge doesn’t cater for this, so in the meantime we can patch the spec file and build it ourselves.

Where we are now - The H Open Source: News and Features
"In twenty years everything has become Linux. I have a music system that is entirely Linux-based. I have a video streaming and TV watching system that is entirely Linux-based. I wouldn't be surprised if every flat screen television I have is also Linux-based. The laptop and the desktop my wife uses to do her online banking and email is Linux. My phone is Linux, and my son's tablet PC is Linux..."

Google’s Six-Front War
While the tech world is buzzing about the launch and implications of Google’s new social network, Google+, it’s worth noting that Google isn’t just in a war with Facebook, it’s at war with multiple companies across multiple industries. In fact, Google is fighting a multi-front war with a host of tech giants for control over some of the most valuable pieces of real estate in technology. Whether it’s social, mobile, browsing, local, enterprise, or even search, Google is being attacked from all angles. And make no mistake about it, they are fighting back and fighting back, hard.

Why Windows Causes Stupidity
Microsoft. We all know them. A lot of us hate them. We can all give reasons, of course; some technical, some philosophical, some economic, some moral, some just plain emotional.

Of course, it's a difficult case. Too many people just get stuck on "Yes, but they're making money", and stop listening at that point.

So, I'm starting fresh. I'm delivering the following assertion:

Windows has significantly set back and held back the IT industry, and continues to do so. Windows encourages, rewards, and practically demands stupidity on the part of its users, and further attempts to force such on anybody who has to deal with the users.

My 7 Favorite Gadgets of the Year: Mobile Technology News «
Which is the best? If pressed to pick my personal favorite among these, it would actually be the Galaxy Tab. That may surprise many, but the device offers a similar experience to the iPad while gaining a level of portability. The Tab works as a 3G mobile hotspot, so I no longer need my Verizon MiFi — a super-useful device that debuted last year. In fact, since I bought my Tab, I’ve only used my Nexus One smartphone for the occasional voice call, which is very telling. The Tab is more useful than my handset, thanks to the bigger display, yet it still goes everywhere with me. Maybe I need to look at a cheap prepaid handset for voice calls in 2011?

Op-Ed Contributor - Microsoft’s Creative Destruction - NYTimes.com
But the much more important question is why Microsoft, America’s most famous and prosperous technology company, no longer brings us the future, whether it’s tablet computers like the iPad, e-books like Amazon’s Kindle, smartphones like the BlackBerry and iPhone, search engines like Google, digital music systems like iPod and iTunes or popular Web services like Facebook and Twitter.

The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs: Let's all take a deep breath and get some perspective
Google Chrome OS: So everyone is worked up about this new browser operating system from Google. Drudge apparently has gone off his meds again and calls it a "death blow" to the Borg. No spinning red light, but still, pretty over the top. I guess it's supposedly going to destroy us too -- like we're some kind of collateral damage. Man oh man. Where to begin?

Coding Horror: Oh, You Wanted "Awesome" Edition
Open source software only comes in one edition: awesome.

The money is irrelevant; the expensive resource here is my brain. If I choose open source, I don't have to think about licensing, feature matrices, or recurring billing. I know, I know, we don't use software that costs money here, but I'd almost be willing to pay for the privilege of not having to think about that stuff ever again

A DRM Dissertation-Geek-Free Debian Tutorials and Stuff
Greetings fellow pirates! Arrrrr!

I'm here today to talk to you about copyright, technology and DRM, I work for the Electronic Frontier Foundation on copyright stuff (mostly), and I live in London. I'm not a lawyer -- I'm a kind of mouthpiece/activist type, though occasionally they shave me and stuff me into my Bar Mitzvah suit and send me to a standards body or the UN to stir up trouble. I spend about three weeks a month on the road doing completely weird stuff like going to Microsoft to talk about DRM.

We Are Morons: a quick look at the Win2k source || kuro5hin.org
Several days ago, two files containing Microsoft source code began circulating on the Internet. One contains a majority of the NT4 source code: this is not discussed here. The other contains a fraction of the Windows 2000 source code, reportedly about 15% of the total. This includes some networking code including winsock and inet; as well as some shell code. Some other familiar items include the event log, and some of the default screensavers.
The timestamps on the files generally say 25 July 2000. The source is contained in a Zip file of size 213,748,207 bytes, named windows_2000_source_code.zip, which has been widely circulated on P2P networks. Some dummy files of similar size, containing just strings of zeroes, have also circulated.

There has been some speculation that while the bulk of the source is genuine, some of the comments have been tampered with to embarrass Microsoft. This is difficult to disprove, but I find it implausible.
