Deconstructing Red Hat’s OpenShift: The Q&A – tecosystems
Red Hat has been focused on the cloud for some time. A few years ago during a conversation with CTO Brian Stevens, he mentioned in an offhand way a company called Makara, and recommended that we look at them. Which we did [coverage]. Almost a month to the day after we shot that video, Red Hat acquired Makara. Post acquisition, CEO Issac Roth was tasked with building out Red Hat’s PaaS capabilities and given access to resources across the company, including personnel from Red Hat internal IT and the support teams.

OpenShift is the result of those efforts. The Makara code plus some RHEL isolation features, the JBoss EE runtime, and other pieces gives you a top to bottom technology stack.

Periodic Table of Typefaces on the Behance Network
The Periodic Table of Typefaces is obviously in the style of all the thousands of over-sized Periodic Table of Elements posters hanging in schools and homes around the world.  This particular table lists 100 of the most popular, influential and notorious typefaces today.

As with traditional periodic tables, this table presents the subject matter grouped categorically.  The Table of Typefaces groups by families and classes of typefaces:  sans-serif, serif, script, blackletter, glyphic, display, grotesque, realist, didone, garalde, geometric, humanist, slab-serif and mixed.

How to allow remote X11 connections to a Red Hat EL 6 machine?
This has been covered on here MANY times...a quick search will pull up lots.

The "xhost +" and exporting the display won't work if your X server won't allow incoming sessions. Do a "ps -ef | grep -i listen". If you see a line similar to
Code:
root x x x 08:14 tty3 00:00:55 /usr/bin/Xorg -br :0 vt7 -nolisten tcp -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-a1lUfb
then your X server won't accept incoming connections, because it's not listening (notice the "nolisten" argument to the X server). To fix this, you would either go into your DM setup (either GDM or KDM config), and set it to listen, or you can edit a file manually. Try /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager, and set the DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER_TCP_PORT_6000_OPEN flag to "yes". You will have to REBOOT, for this to take effect.

Ron Conway on mega-trends, non-bubbles and the joys of angel investing
At SV Angel, we have a chart of “mega-trends” that we follow closely. The first and most obvious is social. We see a new kind of entrepreneur emerging in social. We call them “Behavioral Entrepreneurs.” These behavioral entrepreneurs understand that hardcore algorithms are no longer essential for success. Great UI and UX are becoming the new IP. Thanks to the low cost of computing, these entrepreneurs find innovation in human behavior, not pure technology.
Another mega trend we see is the intersection of real-time data and collective wisdom, where audiences contribute value the bulk of the content, enabling other services to build value by mashing up the layers. Quora is the perfect example.
Social commerce is also huge, as are big data, online-to-offline and, of course, mobile.

New beginnings for Liverpool - Premier League, Soccer - Independent.ie
Kenny Dalglish was appointed Liverpool manager because he represented permanence and he was sacked last week because he couldn't change.

Dalglish waited 20 years to return to the club and when he did, he swiftly united it. Yet everything unravelled last season. Liverpool were unlucky too often and even an FA Cup final victory wouldn't have saved Dalglish.

A plea from a New(ish) Liverpool fan : LiverpoolFC
Okay, coming from a life-long, born and bred in Liverpool fan.
General History
During the 60s, 70s and 80s, Liverpool FC were far and away the best team in England, and were very often the best in Europe. Winning the League 13 times (and none since) and the European Cup (Champions League) 4 times. And ever since the 90s Liverpool have remained a force to be reckoned with, but never regained their former glory. The odd cup here and there, the most significant being the 2005 Champions League.

Default Parameter Values in Python
Python’s handling of default parameter values is one of a few things that tends to trip up most new Python programmers (but usually only once).

What causes the confusion is the behaviour you get when you use a “mutable” object as a default value; that is, a value that can be modified in place, like a list or a dictionary.

Your startup’s top 3 priorities. | ex post facto
Once you have built your product and it’s in the market, there are only three things that matter: distribution (getting the product into users’ hands), engagement (validating that you’ve built the right product and that users are using it), and monetization (making money from those engaged users). This is your strategy.

Python FAQ: Webdev - fuzzy notepad
I only know PHP. How do I write a Web application in Python?

This is a deeply complex question. I could easily fill a book on web development and Python and how to make the two interact, so I was hoping to put this one off for a while. But given that I just trashed PHP rather harshly, it seems prudent to answer it sooner rather than later.

The dead simple answer is to stop reading here, get Flask, and start building a thing. I prefer a bit more nuance, though.

This is not a tutorial. I may write one in the future, but for now, plenty of them already exist, and I assume you can read documentation. Instead, this is an overview of the current state of affairs for someone new to Python web development.

Three Reasons Why Every Smart Startup Is A Digital Media Company - Forbes
In traditional media models, content producers typically give people something they want in the form of entertainment or information. Then they sell access to those people to advertisers — who want to sell something to those people.

Smart online entrepreneurs understand that they play both roles with content marketing. They provide people something they want to consume and share (content) and sell something … but in this case, what they sell is something extremely relevant to the content, and therefore, to the audience.

How Technology is Taking us Back to Old Market Values
Collaborative consumption includes all the forms of bartering, trading, sharing and renting that we are re-inventing through online platforms. It includes renting a room on Airbnb, finding someone to carpool with on Uniiverse and asking a stranger to assemble that IKEA shelf you can’t quite figure out on TaskRabbit. We have started to trade our personal goods or assets with strangers we have never met, or even spoken to before. It would seem like a bit of a crazy idea, but what we’re just returning to the innate sharing behaviour that made us human – and technology is taking us there.

8 Reasons To Choose A Startup Over A Corporate Job | Fast Company
You've graduated from college, diploma in hand (or in the mail), and you have a couple of job offers on the table. Other than being one of the lucky graduates in a weak economy, you have a choice to make. On one hand is a high-paying entry level position at a reputable brand in your field. On the other hand is a job offer from a small startup that is just kicking off. You've seen their product, believe in their mission, and like their approach, but aren't sure you want to take on the risk of working at a startup. You're leaning toward that corporate job and good pay with nice benefits. The smart choice.

63% of B2B Companies Don't Generate Leads From Social Media [New Data]
Follow the 10-4-1 Rule. According to the B2B Social Media Book by Kipp Bodnar and Jeffrey L. Cohen, the 10-4-1 Rule is a ratio that serves as a guideline for the right balance of content to publish in social media. For every 15 of your social media updates, 10 should be pieces of other people's content, 4 should be your own blog articles, and 1 should be a landing page. Make that a rule, follow that ratio no matter how much you post, and it will help you grow your reach (by promoting other people's content), send traffic to your website, and generate leads! If you're a HubSpot customer, it's now really easy to share other peoples' content with the new social bookmarklet. While you browse the web, you can select content you like to be published to your various social networks.

If You Want To Compete With Free, This Is What You Need To Know | Techdirt
When it comes to competing with piracy, one of the talking points of copyright maximalists is that content creators "can't compete with free." These people complain that because pirates don't have to cover production costs, competing with them is a losing venture. What these people have not learned, despite our many attempts to teach them, is that price is not the only cost considered when consumers choose between buying legally and pirating. Over at Gamasutra, one expert blogger, Lars Doucet, has shared a very profound look at four "currencies" people consider when making such a choice.
The problem with most piracy debates is that the only "cost" they discuss is money-dollars.

This is wrong because there are at least four currencies involved here, not just one (money-dollars).

Stop Designing Pages And Start Designing Flows | Smashing UX Design

Too often, we prematurely turn our focus to page design and information architecture, when we should focus on the user flows that need to be supported by our designs. It’s time to make the user flows a bigger priority in our design process.

The 18 Mistakes That Kill Startups
Have you ever noticed how few successful startups were founded by just one person? Even companies you think of as having one founder, like Oracle, usually turn out to have more. It seems unlikely this is a coincidence.

What's wrong with having one founder? To start with, it's a vote of no confidence. It probably means the founder couldn't talk any of his friends into starting the company with him. That's pretty alarming, because his friends are the ones who know him best.

2. Create 10 easy tips to help you [insert topic here] articles. Again, these are exceptionally easy to link to.

5 Mistakes That Kill Startups | Seeqnce Blog
In the hope of avoiding competition, very often entrepreneurs get stuck with ideas that are simply not viable businesses. Trying to be unique, they target so small, so obscure niches that are not a business opportunity at all. This is what Graham points out as a common problem among groups that apply to Y Combinator. He says:” If you watch little kids playing sports, you notice that below a certain age they’re afraid of the ball. When the ball comes near them their instinct is to avoid it. I didn’t make a lot of catches as an eight year old outfielder, because whenever a fly ball came my way, I used to close my eyes and hold my glove up more for protection than in the hope of catching it. Choosing a marginal project is the startup equivalent of my eight year old strategy for dealing with fly balls”. In other words he is saying that great things have competition. Thus you cannot avoid the battle unless you avoid great ideas and focus on something irrelevant.
