"Don't be that guy." Someone should append this kind of post to some of Larry Masinter's emails in the TAG mailing list (e.g. here: http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-tag/2012Apr/0010.html ). I wonder if he'd get the point.

"Why plug computers are a security nightmare" (andrew makes things)
march 2011 by arthegall
I'm pretty sure that the world is quickly becoming a Shadowrun adventure that I ran in 1996. I look forward to seeing cybered-out trolls, wearing leather trenchcoats and carrying swords, walking the streets of Cambridge within the decade.

Mark Bernstein: Bootstrap
february 2011 by arthegall
"His concern, as I recall, was that if hypertext turned out to be good enough, it would set real machine understanding back for a generation while people tinkered with links and retrieval. That’s pretty much what Watson does, as I understand it: it mines lots of hypertextual information to find likely answers, while not trying to build much representational depth. I haven’t read the papers; I may be wrong." -- Wow, that "hyper-" prefix carries a lot of water here. FWIW, I think this kind of argument is itself subtly wrong; you might as well argue that Deep Blue "set real machine understanding" of chess back a generation. I think I usually find people who want to describe "understanding" qualitatively, rather than functionally, to be somewhat obtuse -- and I find it somewhat awesome that teams of people working at a large company seem to be able to grant me some measure of insight into Turing Tests and "intelligence."

Self-Portrait With Ground Squirrel - Neatorama
august 2009 by arthegall
I hope you'll forgive me for suggesting this morning that we level Canada's natural forests, raze Toronto, and use the leftover space to build wind-turbines that satisfy our own voracious energy appetite. Maybe this picture will help heal the rift.

Full Commodore 64 Emulator Rejected from App Store | Touch Arcade
june 2009 by arthegall
"3.3.2 An Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwise. No interpreted code may be downloaded and used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple's Published APIs and built-in interpreter(s)." -- Insanity. By this standard, their own browser would fail to be an acceptable AppStore offering (since it downloads and interprets Javascript, no?) Richard Stallman is looking less and less crazy by the minute.
