"No," he said, "that helps, but that's not it." The three he named are:
(1) Don't have a lot of overhead. Don't commit to a large rent. Don't have a large mortgage or, if you do, pay it down quickly.
(2) Be "footloose." That is, be able to adjust quickly when things go bad. So, for example, he told the story of a friend who was doing well but then had his rent on a municipal property jacked up by a local government that saw that he was doing well. His friend didn't renew the lease but went elsewhere quickly.
(3) Take advantage of--and maximize if at all possible--all of the tax-advantaged ways of saving that you have access to: max your 401(k), max your Roth, etc. He told of a man who worked for a large company and who, over his working life, maxed his 401(k) and now has $1.4 million in that account alone.

Remee - The REM enhancing Lucid Dreaming Mask by Bitbanger Labs — Kickstarter
5 hours ago
Yes, really! For nearly as long as recorded human history, the idea of consciously recognizing and controlling our dreams has been around. From the Hindu Upanishads to Aristotle's On Dreams, people have been puzzling out the mysteries of lucid dreaming for centuries. These days, there's more information on Lucid Dreaming, the science behind it, and modes and methods of experiencing it than there ever has been. Yet the idea still remains relatively unknown to the average person.
To us, this is kind of a shame, sort of like being unaware of the existence of books or music. Lucid Dreaming can be one of the most profound things you can experience in this life - but explaining it to someone who has never done it can be a bit difficult. It is so visceral and hard to put into words that it can rarely be related in a meaningful way to a non-lucid dreamer. Conversely, when a lucid dreamer meets another lucid dreamer comin' through the rye, general excitement and lots of note-comparing ensues. It almost feels like a secret club. We want you to be in that club, too.

a jQuery slideshow plugin
it's easy
The package is based around the way you already build your website, so you don’t have to retain swaths of arbitrary knowledge to use it on a regular basis.
it's small
At 15kB for the full version, and a minute 6kB for the hyper-compressed version, and tidy code, this plugin won’t bog down your site
or burn out your users’ browsers, even using it in multiple iterations per page.
it's flexible
With the little markup you need to add to your site, you get a full featureset, like the ability to put whatever data you want within the slide window, even mixed types, a proportionally-correct status display that configures itself, fullscreen display and swipe functionality.
it's neat
Add some slick usability
to your site with a plugin that’s fun and easy to use. And if you have any other questions, I’ll be happy
to help you out.

Filter Functionality with CSS3 | Codrops

Using the general sibling combinator and the :checked pseudo-class, we can toggle states of other elements by checking a checkbox or a radio button. In this tutorial we will be exploring those CSS3 properties by creating a experimental portfolio filter that will toggle the states of items of a specific type.

The CS6 Desktop Brand System | Adobe Brand Experience
2 days ago
It takes well over a year to design, execute, deliver, and ensure the proper implementation of the roughly 5,000 or so assets it takes to get a CS release out the door (we’re already thinking about CS7). Along the away, there are innumerable institutional, technological, and political hurdles to overcome. It can be daunting, but we do everything we can to get it made with as few design compromises as possible.
We know that every release requires change and that the change will make some people unhappy. Like many of you, we are life-long users and fans of the tools, and we do our best to create something that we can be proud of, knowing full well that some people will not agree with our choices. Then again, if no one reacts negatively, it’s probably not very interesting.
In this regard, we consider our work for CS6 a success. We achieved our design goals, met the technical requirements, and shipped it more or less in the form we imagined. If you’ve ever done design work for a big company, you will understand why this is cause for celebration.
As we write this, CS6 has just shipped, and the first reactions are starting to appear on the web. Though much of this may be new to you, we’ve been staring at it for more than a year and have come to really love these bright little icons, illustrative splashes, and other elements. We hope you will too.

Profiler | Kemper Profiling Amplifier | KPA | Guitar Amplification Redefined
3 days ago
The Kemper Profiling Amplifier enables you to do what generations of guitar players have been waiting for: to capture the soul of all your amps (and so many more) inside a lunchbox-sized amplifier.
So, how does it work? We use cutting edge technology to capture the sonic DNA of virtually any guitar amp. The resulting Profiles are as living, vivid and dynamic as the original amps.
Imagine you’ve used some sweet-sounding, well-maintained vintage tube amps in your last studio session: With the Kemper Profiling Amplifier, there’s no need to leave those sounds behind anymore. Simply create your own Profiles from these amps and take them with you to use anywhere you like. Variations with alternative amp settings can be created and even the cabinet of a profiled combo amp can be exchanged at any time. Dozens of pro-grade onboard effects and stomp boxes can be used to spice up the Profiles. We even give you Profiles of many exceptional signature amps.
Any amp. Any time. Anywhere. We mean it.

SASS vs. LESS | CSS-Tricks
"Which CSS preprocessor language should I choose?" is a hot topic lately. I've been asked in person several times and an online debate has been popping up every few days it seems. It's nice that the conversation has largely turned from whether or not preprocessing is a good idea to which one language is best. Let's do this thing.
Really short answer: SASS
Slightly longer answer: SASS is better on a whole bunch of different fronts, but if you are already happy in LESS, that's cool, at least you are doing yourself a favor by preprocessing.
Much longer answer: Read on.

What’s that? It has a higher pixel density than an HD TV? Of course, you’d want a lovely wallpaper to shine on that screen, don’t you? Although the new iPad has been out for just a few days, there are already many beautiful and unique backgrounds and homescreen wallpapers out there. We thought this would be the perfect time to put together another roundup and bring forward the work of all the awesome designers and photographers. Some Exceptional CSS3 Magic on this UI
17 days ago
There are very little details that are with me about this stunning piece of work, but before I get to that, I urge you to visit this URL and check out the beauty for yourself. Of course, we recommend a Webkit browser for this.
The site, apparently, is a demo of the Dashboard for an admin interface for something ‘Pastel’. There’s a lot going on there — a nifty growl-like notifications area, a text-editor with live Markdown previews, a section for UI elements, a photo montage, iPhone app preview and a location sandbox using Google Maps. There’s an excellent use of CSS3 and other beautiful elements throughout the site. Oh, and don’t forget to check out their 404 page.
If you know more about it, please let us know on Twitter @beautifulpixels.
Update: We’ve just been told that this beauty of an interface is available for purchase at ThemeForest. Thanks, @__edb.
Update II: We’ve just received more information about this work. The creator of the Pastel Dashboard is Jakob Pedersen and he also let us know about the equally great Login page. Check out the funky wobble effect when you enter the wrong password.

Microsoft provides virtual machine disk images to facilitate website testing in multiple versions of IE, regardless of the host operating system. Unfortunately, setting these virtual machines up without Microsoft's VirtualPC can be extremely difficult. The ievms scripts aim to facilitate that process using VirtualBox on Linux or OS X. With a single command, you can have IE6, IE7, IE8 and IE9 running in separate virtual machines.

Perhaps we should warn you upfront for the long compilation, but what can we say — there are so many excellent tools out there which deserve attention of the community, yet unfortunately remain obscure way too often. We love all the designers and developers out there for releasing and producing useful, valuable resources for all of us to use! We, for one, surely sincerely appreciate it in the name of the Web design community. Whether you like it or not, here are some of the most useful coding and workflow tools released recently.

Using the Fullscreen API in web browsers ✩ Mozilla Hacks – the Web developer blog

One thing which has been very important when it comes to creating special end user experiences have been the ability to show something fullscreen, effectively hiding all the other content etc.
Remember when web sites gave you instructions how to configure your web browser with hiding toolbars and more, just to get a slightly better user experience? Or maybe it’s just me… :-)
Either way, some time ago we got fullscreen support in web browsers where the user could choose to view the current web site in fullscreen. That’s all good and well, but as an extension to that, as web developers we want to be able to trigger that. Either for the entire web site or just a specific element.
And now we can!

Ho attenuator | Ho's Electronics and Sound
29 days ago
Do love to crank your amp because you find that is the only way to achieve the BEST tones?
But, do you find it difficult to play at those levels because the volume is just too high?
Do you wish you could play at a lower volume WITHOUT losing the tone you get when your amp is cranked up?
Well, then you’ll love the attenuator. The Attenuator is the first born of HO’s products.
How it works: This is a very simple yet effective device. Just hook up your amp to the attenuator and use the volume knob on the attenuator to adjust the volume. You can crank the volume on your own amp to the desired level then use the attenuator as the volume control. You can crank your own amp volume all the way to the top and use the attenuator to bring that volume down. You will find that the tone does not change! Only the volume does.
Benefits: You can play at ANY volume level WITHOUT losing the tone that you want.
The attenuator is sold at three different wattages. 10w, 50w, and 100w.
A 10 watt attenuator is best if you live in an apartment, if you like to play late at night, or wherever you aren’t allowed to crank your amp up.
A 100 watt is good if you play in a band and you often play in smaller venues.
Don’t believe its capabilities? Come in and try it out!

Scandlen on Individual Insurance, David Henderson | EconLog | Library of Economics and Liberty
4 weeks ago
Greg Scandlen has an interesting post today on the market for individual insurance. Many of the comments are informative also. Some highlights:
According to a recent report by Milliman, based on new reporting by carriers required by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), there are only 10,300,000 people covered by individual health insurance - three percent of the population of the United States. And denials would happen only at the time of application for coverage, not after someone is already covered. The trade group America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) reports that 87% of all applicants for individual coverage are accepted.

Why Are Donations to Government So Small?, Bryan Caplan | EconLog | Library of Economics and Liberty
4 weeks ago
"What's stopping Warren Buffett from paying more taxes?" is a red herring. The fundamental question is: "Why is government's share of the voluntary donations market so damn small?" All genuinely charitable donations suffer from the Prisoners' Dilemma problem that Will describes. That's probably a big part of the reason why charity is only a few percent of GDP. But none of this explains why out of the more $300 billion that Americans give to charity, the American government garners about $3 million. Despite widespread nationalist and statist sentiments, Uncle Sam's share of the charity market is microscopic - less than .001%. How very odd.

Just answer these 4 questions: Who is the main character? What is the main character trying to accomplish? Who is trying to stop the main character? What happens if the main character fails?
You didn’t think it would be that easy, did you?
Contour, the proven story development system developed by Emmy Award-nominated Jeffrey Alan Schechter, is designed to take your idea and turn it into a solid outline – the same kind of character-based structure used by many of the biggest blockbuster movies.
Minimum Theory, Maximum Story.
Unlike other story development systems which are either so complicated that you don’t know where to start or so light-weight as to wonder, “why in the world did I buy this?”, Contour is a must-have for every screenwriter. Taking your idea and using a fill-in-the blanks and intuitive approach, Contour guides you as to what elements need to be part of your story outline – you’re never left to wonder, “what comes next?”. Clarify provides a hassle-free way of turning screenshots into beautiful documents in five minutes or less.

This is a small animation a did as an exercise to experiment and explore all the graphical possibilities of representing the idea of the SPHERE, always thinking in searching Gestalt and form. Its all done in 3d, but i was more interested in the graphical interest, flatten the surfaces, and only two colors, why more. The most difficult was to achieve the transitions between the different type of representation of the sphere, the morphing and metamorphosing.

Ziptastic is a simple API that allows people to ask which Country,State and City are associated with a Zip Code.
The purpose for this service is to STOP the madness of having to fill those information out on webforms. If you've ever filled out a webform, then you have probably gotten to the address section and simply entered in your street information and then your city, state, country and then your zip code. This has always bothered me because the 3 fields prior to the zip code can be determined from the zip code!

Letters of Note: Some Thoughts on Our Business
7 weeks ago
20 years ago, in January of 1991, a very critical 28-page internal memo — written by the then-head of Disney's film studios, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and distributed to his fellow executives in an effort to refocus their approach — was leaked to the press, and instantly became talk of the industry. The recent release of the big-budget Dick Tracy movie had been a disappointment and, as a result, Katzenberg was desperate to recapture the magic of old and rid his studio of their extremely costly "blockbuster mentality." This fascinating, highly quotable memo was his mission statement. Its subsequent circulation in Hollywood caused a huge stir.
"I have written this memo in the hope of offering a blueprint for a business that can deliver on the public’s expectations with some consistency. A business that can weather the economic storms because it is governed by a sensible strategy designed to foster fiscal success… and, in the end, create magic."

ESPI at work: The power of Keynote | Edenspiekermann
7 weeks ago
Stop the press: There exists a world outside of the Adobe Creative Suite. And it’s called Keynote.
I should start by saying I am by no means a Keynote ‘pro’ compared with many of our web team who could use it in their sleep. In fact, when I first started working at ESPI last July, I was very surprised to find out that designers were using Keynote for laying out presentations. My surprise turned to alarm when I found out that they were also using it as a design tool to build UI designs for websites and apps. It turns out that I was absolutely wrong. Keynote is an incredibly powerful design tool. Less then one year later, I now rarely (if ever) use InDesign to layout presentations, and I have started using Keynote almost exclusively for any web layouts I do. And not just UX wireframes, but full UI designs. On a recent project, I also used it for poster mock ups, banner designs and a bunch of other formats.

Remove the Auto-Hiding Dock Delay in Mac OS X
7 weeks ago
If you use a hidden Dock in Mac OS X, you can speed up the time it takes to show the Dock with a defaults write command. This command removes the delay from when a cursor is hovered near the Dock location and to when it’s displayed, it doesn’t change the animation speed of the dock sliding in and out itself.
Remove the Delay for Auto-Hide & Auto-Show of Dock
Launch the Terminal and enter the following defaults write command:
defaults write com.apple.Dock autohide-delay -float 0 && killall Dock
The tail end of the command includes killall which will cause the Dock to relaunch in order for changes to take effect. After it has been refreshed, hover over the area of the screen where the Dock is hidden and you’ll notice it shows up immediately, without the fraction of a second delay.
This tip also impacts how to show the Dock in a full screen app, preventing the need for a double-swipe down when in full screen mode, and instead displaying the Dock instantly with a hover in the region.
Return to Default Dock Hide/Show Delay
To return to the default setting and autohide delay, go back to the Terminal and enter the following command:
defaults delete com.apple.Dock autohide-delay && killall Dock
The Dock will again relaunch and settings will return to their default state.
This is a handy tip from MacWorld, thanks for sending it in Eric

TinkerTool: Description
TinkerTool is an application that gives you access to additional preference settings Apple has built into Mac OS X. This allows to activate hidden features in the operating system and in some of the applications delivered with the system.
The tool makes sure that preference changes can only affect the current user. You don't need administrative privileges to use the tool. With this design, it is no problem to use TinkerTool in professional networks where users have restricted permissions. The program will never change any component of the operating system, so the integrity of your system is not put at risk, and there will be no negative effect on system updates.
All preference settings changed by TinkerTool can be reset to Apple's defaults, or to the state that existed before using the tool. No dangerous background processes are used for TinkerTool's operation.
TinkerTool is electronically distributed software. You can download the product free of charge.

Krugman on Supreme Court Reasoning About Health Insurance, David Henderson | EconLog | Library of Economics and Liberty
8 weeks ago
Great comment in the comments:
"Ken B has it right. Scalia's argument is of a legal nature, not an economic one. As it should be.
And that is Krugman's (and the government's) problem. They don't get that you can't use an economic argument to win a legal battle.
At least the government attempts to turn their argument into a legal one; Krugman just doesn't seem to understand what the judicial branch is supposed to do. Essentially, the government is using the temporary characteristics of one market to link it to another. It argues that because of the tremendous expense of treating serious illness, which we will all face someday, the health care and health insurance markets are one in the same since everyone will need health care that can only be paid for via health insurance. And since the need for serious health care is inevitable for all, forcing people to buy insurance is not the same compelling people to engage in commerce, it is merely regulating in advance their participation in commerce that they can’t avoid.
But, even if this were true, it would only be true for now. There is no reason to believe it would always be. However unlikely, markets can change tomorrow with either market-based reforms, uncontroversial regulation, major developments in techniques, etc. And it is likely, maybe certain, that there will be a day when most necessary medical procedures can be done affordably, which would then turn the tables on the mandate. You would then be able to say that most people will not require medical treatment that they can’t afford. So then, the claim that everyone will eventually need health insurance will be invalid, because insurance may be necessary to cover only the rarest of illnesses. So then what? Does the mandate become unconstitutional since you can’t assume everyone will need insurance at some point? Well, in my view, yes. The government can no longer argue that is only forcing you to buy something you will eventually need—because you probably won’t.
And then what are you left with? A really bad precedent that says that congress can compel a person to enter into commerce so long as it has enough reason to believe that that person will have to enter into said commerce at some point in his life.
Major precedent (permanent) justified by market conditions (temporary). How problematic is that?"

You Say You Want A Revolution...: Is the Pool of Liberty Drying Up?
Liberty is like the water in a swimming pool. You can dive in, and be surrounded by freedom. In the past, the pool was large and deep. Those who could dive in were engulfed in liberty. It was everywhere. There was so much liberty you could drown in it if you were not careful, but people exposed to liberty were buoyant, and liberty lifted you.
And entry into the pool, for many, was their birthright. It could not be taken away. The lifeguard at the pool was like a night watchman, seldom needed, helpful in emergencies.
Sadly, though, and wrongly, the pool was restricted. No blacks allowed, with only token exceptions. No Jews. No gays. No women. Property owners preferred. Yet despite all this, the pool and the opportunity to dive into it attracted millions from all over the world.
Over time, two things happened, one good, one bad. Rules were changed to allow more people to enter the pool. Over time first blacks, then Asians, Jews, women--now, though not yet fully, even gays--have been allowed to join the club and enter the pool. Sadly, at the same time, the pool has been shrinking. Once the pool was gigantic in size. As James Wilson might have said, “Measure the size of the pool? I am sure, sirs, that no gentleman in the late

Caching URLs with Query Strings « Mike Brittain

What you gain is the ability to break your cached versions of files when necessary, but to also set long-term cache times on these assets (while they’re not changing) and expect cache servers between you and your users to properly store these objects.

Force reload of updated CSS and Javascript files with unique filenames
9 weeks ago
I've posted about doing this previously using the timestamp as part of a query string, but it would appear this method has implications with proxy servers often not caching the files due to the query string. I found that post thanks to the comments to David Walsh's recent post in which he suggests always writing out the timestamp to the Javascript or CSS filename.
The problem with doing that is it will force the browser to always download a copy of those files on every page request which somewhat defeats the purpose of caching. Instead I'll show here how to make the filename unique based on the last time it was modified, and without having to use query strings or rename the file thanks to a little bit of .htaccess magic.
If the stylesheet is css/main.css and the Javascript file js/common.js you can write out the appropriate tags into your page like this:
