Kids on the Internet: danah boyd’s controversial idea that kids should be allowed to roam free. - Slate Magazine
The important thing, boyd points out, is to give the kid the ability to handle choices, assess risks, and take what she calls “strategic” risks, or calculated risks. You want, in other words, to create the kid who can handle the Internet without you. And how can they become that kid if you are watching them all the time, if you are always hovering right there next to them? She says, “You don't just throw a 5-year-old out on the streets and tell her to figure it all out. The same is true online. But, equivalently, you can't expect to put under surveillance and control every action a child makes until she's 18 and then magically assume she'll be fine off at college when she hasn't had any experience managing her own decisions.”
The point, according to boyd, is not to create a safe world, but a safer world. Of course this is very fraught emotional territory, since it engages with the crucial and impossible fantasy that we can protect our children, that there is some way to seal them off from awful or painful or frightening things. Here I think of a line from one of boyd’s papers: “Our fears are amplified when they intersect with our insecurities and challenge our ability to be in control. Nowhere is this more palpable than when it comes a parent’s desire to protect their children.”

grecolaborativo
Grecolaborativo is a full-family collaboration, a couple creating with their young daughter and son. Our plush art and costumes, created under the name Lizette Greco, are based on the children's drawings and made using mostly thrifted and recycled materials. We also accept commissions for pieces using drawings from other children. Our aim is to create artwork that celebrates a child's perspective of the world and that will hopefully be passed from generation to generation.

For further information about our life in art, see our full profile. A more detailed explanation of how we work together can be found with the squids. We always have several projects brewing, and our family is very involved in the field of education — unschooling at home (one example) and through Rob's work at a progressive school. You can keep track of us with the following links:

Pass the Books. Hold the Oil. - NYTimes.com
In sum, says Schleicher, “knowledge and skills have become the global currency of 21st-century economies, but there is no central bank that prints this currency. Everyone has to decide on their own how much they will print.” Sure, it’s great to have oil, gas and diamonds; they can buy jobs. But they’ll weaken your society in the long run unless they’re used to build schools and a culture of lifelong learning. “The thing that will keep you moving forward,” says Schleicher, is always “what you bring to the table yourself.”

Cubelets KT06 Kit Pre-Order
The KT06 kit contains 6 Cubelets that can be snapped together to make a variety of robots with no programming and no wires. You can build robots that drive around on a tabletop, respond to light and other objects, and have surprisingly lifelike behavior. But instead of programming that behavior, you snap the cubelets together and watch the behavior emerge like with a flock of birds or a swarm of bees.
Which cubelets are in the KT06 kit?
Action Blocks: 1 Drive, 1 Flashlight
Sense Blocks: 1 Brightness, 1 Distance
Think/Utility Blocks: 1 Battery, 1 Passive
The KT06 kit comes with batteries, but not with a charger.
Cubelets are designed for people age 8 and older.

Don’t Fear the Internet
Are you a print designer, photographer, fine-artist, or general creative person? Do you have a shitty website that you slapped together yourself in Dreamweaver in that ONE web design class that you took in college? Do you not have a site at all because you’ve been waiting two years for your cousin to put it together for you? Well, we’re here to help. We know that you have little to no desire to do web design professionally, but that doesn’t mean that you want an ugly cookie-cutter site or to settle for one that hasn't been updated since Hackers was in theaters. Through short tutorial videos, you’ll learn how to take a basic wordpress blog and manipulate the css, html (and even some php!) to match your aesthetic. You’ll feel empowered rather than crippled by the internet and worst case scenario you’ll at least end up having a better idea of how professional web designers turn your design dreams into a reality on screen.

How About Better Parents? - NYTimes.com
“Parent involvement can take many forms, but only a few of them relate to higher student performance. Of those that work, parental actions that support children’s learning at home are most likely to have an impact on academic achievement at school.

“Monitoring homework; making sure children get to school; rewarding their efforts and talking up the idea of going to college. These parent actions are linked to better attendance, grades, test scores, and preparation for college,” Barth wrote. “The study found that getting parents involved with their children’s learning at home is a more powerful driver of achievement than parents attending P.T.A. and school board meetings, volunteering in classrooms, participating in fund-raising, and showing up at back-to-school nights.”

Human-Computer Interfaces
In this course, you will learn how to design technologies that bring people joy, rather than frustration. You'll learn several technique for rapidly prototyping and evaluating multiple interface alternatives — and why rapid prototyping and comparative evaluation are essential to excellent interaction design. You'll learn how to conduct fieldwork with people to help you get design ideas. How to make paper prototypes and low-fidelity mock-ups that are interactive -- and how to use these designs to get feedback from other stakeholders like your teammates, clients, and users. You'll learn principles of visual design so that you can effectively organize and present information with your interfaces. You'll learn principles of perception and cognition that inform effective interaction design. And you'll learn how to perform and analyze controlled experiments online. In many cases, we'll use Web design as the anchoring domain. A lot of the examples will come from the Web, and we'll talk just a bit about Web technologies in particular. When we do so, it will be to support the main goal of this course, which is helping you build human-centered design skills, so that you have the principles and methods to create excellent interfaces with any technology.

The Story of Stuff Project
When Annie Leonard and her friends at Free Range Studios set out in 2007 to share what she’d learned about the way we make, use and throw away Stuff, they thought 50,000 views would be a good result for her ‘20-minute cartoon about trash.’ Today, with over 15 million views and counting, The Story of Stuff is one of the most watched environmental-themed online movies of all time.
Annie founded the non-profit Story of Stuff Project in 2008 to respond to tens of thousands of viewer requests for more information and ways to get involved. We create short, easily shareable online movies that explore some of the key features of our relationship with Stuff—including how we can make things better; we provide high quality educational resources and programs to everyone from teachers and people of faith to business and community leaders; and we support the learning and action of the over 250,000 members of the Story of Stuff community.
The Story of Stuff Project is proud to be fiscally sponsored by San Francisco’s Tides Center. We are supported by grants from private and public foundations, revenue from speaking appearances and DVD and book sales, and contributions from people like you.
Please help us keep our films and other content free by making a secure, tax-deductible on-line contribution today.

Imagination: Creating the Future of Education & Work
If the future workforce continues to be trained for the past, particularly as other countries look ahead, Americans will no longer be globally competitive as the domestic economy and infrastructure continue to collapse. // Since 2007, the directors of this project have been collaborating on the development of imagination as the driving force behind this shift. The research and field work covered in this project began in January 2009. Rather than publishing results as a book or white paper, both of which are one-sided approaches to a subject that demands a conversation, an interactive site was chosen as the format. // This site doesn’t just present theories and ideas, but rather actionable solutions that can be immediately and easily implemented in service of a relevant education for American students who need to gain proficiency if not mastery of core subject areas while at the same time being prepared for the reality of future work.

Time Tree :: The Timescale of Life
TimeTree is a public knowledge-base for information on the evolutionary timescale of life. A search utility allows exploration of the thousands of divergence times among organisms in the published literature. A tree-based (hierarchical) system is used to identify all published molecular time estimates bearing on the divergence of two chosen taxa, such as species, compute summary statistics, and present the results. Names of two taxa to be compared are entered in the search window and the results are presented on a separate page. Alternatively the last name of an author is entered to find divergence times published by that person. For those interested in published summaries of relationships and divergence times of major groups of organisms (family level and above), see the authoritative synthesis The Timetree of Life.

Helping Kids Choose Books According to Reading Level and Use | Scholastic.com
How do I select books for my children to read (they are 6 and 8 years old)? // Think of selecting books at these ages according to how they might be used: Read-Alouds; Read-Withs; Read-Alones // A read-aloud book is one that you read to your child at special times — like bedtime or in a comfy chair on a rainy afternoon. These books should always be well above your child's independent reading level because you are the one in control of the reading. // A "read with" book is one that you and your child read together. Now, however, the primary control of the book is in your child's hands, as for the most part, your child will be the one reading aloud. These books should be generally at or slightly above your child's independent reading level. // A read alone book is just that — a book that your child selects and then reads on her own, perhaps at night after spending earlier time with a read-aloud.

Mike Dickison's Amazing Zoology Facts - Compiled by Mike Dickison, PhD in Zoology
You shouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet. For example, there are plenty of pages that solemnly tell you flamingoes bend their knees backwards. In fact, all birds have forward-facing knees: the knee is up in their feathers, the ankle is the bit that goes backwards, their foot bones are fused together, and birds walk on their toes. This is because birds are dinosaurs: T. rex walked the same way, but his foot bones weren’t fused yet. Isn’t the real story usually more interesting? [для чистоты надо было бы вставить один ошибочный факт]
